Initially, I thought this book was not going to help me much. What it talks about is so relatable in my relationship with my mom that what pushed me forward when reading those pages was a desire to have my experience narrated and told to me as if I was not the one living it for a moment. I felt so relieved to read this as, contrary to what mass media portrays, I feel my relationship with my family resembles the views of this author. 100% would recommend this book.

Libro trovato casualmente tramite mercatino dell'usato.
Crudo, potente e schietto.
Straconsigliato.

It is very difficult for me to put into words why I enjoyed this book so much and why I devoured it. The vocabulary feels quite dated for 1990; it could easily belong to the 1960s (though perhaps this was intentional). The relationship between a girl—growing from child to woman—and her mother is full of contradictions yet incredibly intense. We see the perspective of the daughter who is closest to her mother compared to her siblings, but who is, at the same time, the most troubled. It is a relationship filled with an understated yet deeply present love, as well as resentments on both sides. Set against the backdrop of the golden age of feminism, the book depicts a time of solidarity among women, but also one of exposing behaviors of subservience to men—focusing more on flushing out the guilty party than on standing in solidarity with her. Ultimately, an excellent and highly relevant book.

I read the original version in Italian. So we'll written. It seemed so real.
In this book you can understand better your parents if you knew how they grew up and how to try to be less selfish when they grow old.
