About the author

Ann Carol Crispin (1950-2013) was an American science fiction writer, the author of over twenty published novels. She wrote professionally since 1983. She wrote several Star Trek and Star Wars novels, and created her own original science fiction series called Starbridge.

Crispin also served as Eastern Regional Director, and then Vice President, of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. With Victoria Strauss, she founded Writer Beware, a "watchdog" group that is part of SFWA that warns aspiring writers about the dangers of scam agents, editors, and publishers. Writer Beware was founded in 1998, and has assisted law enforcement and civil authorities in tracking and shutting down writing scams.

Crispin, who also wrote a prequel providing the back story for the popular Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, died on September 6th, 2013 at the Hospice of Charles County in Waldorf, aged 63.

She was married to science fiction author Michael Capobianco.

From the opening pages to the final chapter, this novel and the characters who live and breathe between its covers will enchant and enthrall its readers. Jezzil, a Chonao warrior, Thia, a novice priestess, Talis, a strong, young revolutionary, Eregard, Prince of Pela, and Khith, a Hthras physician, this unlikely yet engaging quintet pulls the reader into their world to face an enemy more horrific than they can imagine. I like the hints of information from past histories.

Masterfully written, rich with detail and fast-paced, this tale of friendship, loyalty, courage and adventure grabs the reader and holds on relentlessly until the final battle is fought and the last page is turned and only then, reluctantly and by necessity, lets go. For now.

I think I read this a few years ago, but the characters have stuck with me. :)
To my knowledge this was supposed to be a series, and while there are some important questions left unanswered the ending is still satisfying.

I really enjoyed this book. It was well-written and memorable, with a cast of unique characters. It has been a while since I read it, but from what I remember it was a page turner. Very disappointed that the series was put on hold, as I was looking forward to reading more.

A.C. Crispin's Storms of Destiny was sporadically compelling. It starts slow, and some characters' parts after that are boring as hell, but some of it is very interesting.

Though I don't understand why so many characters have rape and/or sexual abuse in their past. There's the rapist uncle, the sexually abusive prince, the attempted-rapist overseer, the rapist pirates, the rapist demon god, the spy who was raped in the past, the acolyte the rapist demon god wants for itself.... It's nearly a theme. Plus, members of the protagonist group are confusedly nearly hooking up and having the occasional partial sexual awakening.

A group of disparate people come together--a fantasy plot classic--in a world of oncoming wars and end up defying a demon god.

I'm not going to bother with the sequel.

Dull and a bit depressing. Suffers from having too many character points of view. She was up to five by the time I stopped reading. How can you care about characters you hardly spend any time with?
