In this work, Dr. Swafford opens up the wisdom of C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters. From challenges at home, evangelization, overcoming anxiety, doubt, prayer, and becoming other-centered--these and many other struggles a Christian is bound to face show up in these pages. What unites this book is Swafford's ability to untwist the demonic plan to keep us down and bring us to despair. Truly, this work provides a roadmap for spiritual survival in the modern age, one that will empower us to live a life of joy and peace right now.
This is a short guide to spiritual life based upon a selection of letters from C. S. Lewis's book "The Screwtape Letters". It is best read as something of a devotional aid. The chapters are short reflections on different aspects of the Christian life. The author provides some helpful, challenging, and encouraging insights on how to deal with various situations that will be encountered in one's day to day life. There is also a short appendix looking at St. Ignatius's 14 rules.
As this is not an exercise in academic writing, one should not be surprised that the author does not engage in extended discussion of some of the deeper subjects (such as divine foreknowledge and prayer). That being said, I was surprised by the fact that some of these discussions were brushed off so easily (leaving the reader with the idea that none of the great philosophers or theologians of the past had anything worth saying on these subjects). A sober and well-explained discussion of a difficult subject, with directions given for other places to look in case the reader wants to know more, is often of great value for the spiritual wellbeing of an individual. It is a pity the author did not see fit to use the opportunities presented by Lewis's book to provide these valuable insights.
