Michael and Debi Pearl were both raised in Memphis, Tennessee, in good homes, by parents who were faithful to point them to God. Mike, a graduate of Mid-South Bible College in Memphis (now Victory University), has been active in evangelism and the work of the ministry since he was a teenager. He worked with Union Mission in Memphis for 25 years, while he and Debi also ministered to the many military families in Memphis and pastored churches. They moved to rural Tennessee where they continued in the work by holding Bible studies in local homes, which eventually led to regular meetings of the local body of believers, and by starting the prison ministry. God eventually led them into the ministry of writing on child training and family relationships, which they now feel is their life’s work and calling. In addition to the child training ministry, the work of the prison ministry, missions, Bible studies, and family life is still ongoing. The Pearls have been married since 1971, and have 5 children and 18 grandchildren. The Pearl children have always been involved in their parents’ ministry, and in their adulthood continue to be involved in some way in ministering where they are.

The illustrations are captivating. I appreciate that every page has the Scripture passages at the bottom for cross referencing.

If you’re looking for an illustrated version of the Bible to share with your kids, I don’t recommend this one. It’s an adaptation or retelling instead of an accurate version of Scripture. Also, several of the most violent sections are illustrated in detail and may not be appropriate.

The overall flow was strange in that what might be a section that Scripture spends a lot of time on was glossed over in this version, and sections that Scripture doesn’t give much detail on were expanded/fleshed out here. The adaptor took some big liberties filling in the gaps on what Scripture doesn’t cover.

The text that isn’t a direct quote from scripture is not only distractingly modern, but it’s obvious the bias the adaptor held and was pushing.

First the positive: someone has illustrated a good chunk of the Bible and put it into colorful graphics along with text in the style of graphic novels. I commend the writer and illustrator for that. This is not your typical Bible story book, and not for kids.
Then the negative: this book is the author's interpretation of the Bible, and they seem to have an agenda. The selections of what to include seem to be heavy on God's judgment, especially on sexual sins. For example, on page 13, one text box states, “With each new generation, as the people increased sin increased. The people committed sexual sins and were violent. Every thought was sinful. No one lived righteously. Adam had committed one sin; the people now committed many sins.” There seems to be an opinion that if someone commits more sins, they are worse. But all of humanity has sinned through the Fall, and everything we do is tainted. It is only through the grace of God that anyone can be saved. When we try to prioritize sins, it leads to many problems.
Strangely, the entire story of Joseph from Genesis is missing, but much detail is spent on the judgment of the Flood and Sodom. I would like to have read more about God's covenantal work with Israel, showing his love and faithfulness to them even though they constantly sinned against him.
I give one point for the concept, but the author's way of looking at God's providence is different from my catechism classes.

Ugh. I hate it when people use the Bible as propaganda.

The moral of Sodom and Gemorrah: If you’re gay, God will kill you.

No! That’s not what the Bible says. If you read Ezekiel 16 it says that they were destroyed because they were fat and wealthy and didn’t help the poor. But that’s not the narrative today’s capitalist right-wing church wants you to hear.

Oh, wow - and towards the end, this is a complete lie!

“The Gospel of Christ is different from all other religions of world in that it is not spread by constraint or intimidation.”

What?!? What a bunch of crap.

And, of course, at the end, when we see someone’s book of life brought forward to list all the sins, “Homosexual Acts” is right next to “Murder”.

This is gross.

You can read this for free on the internet, but I don’t recommend it.
