“I saw him for who he was; not just some tortured ex-con trying to beat back his demons and figure out his place in the world. Stone Gentry was sexy, complex, damaged, mysterious. He was a man I could fall for …if he let me.”
1513 …The number of single lines you carefully scratched on a piece of notebook paper at each sunrise. 1513…The number of days you passed in a locked cage, surrounded by fierce men who did things even worse than what you did. 1513…The number of nights spent staring at the ceiling, praying for just five minutes of freedom to talk to your brother. The brother you love more than anyone on earth. The brother who hates you even more than he hates himself. 1…The number of moments it took for a tragedy to unfold and change lives, end lives, destroy lives. 1…The number that represents isolation, a loneliness worse than any prison sentence. 1…The number of girls who show up in your life and try to crack through the iron shield you’ve built around your heart these past four years. One girl and her name is Evie. Beautiful. Stubborn. Passionate. You know that if you had any honor you wouldn’t take her. But honor is something you lost a long time ago.
I'm a huge fan of insta-love , grunge era flannel, my vintage Kenmore sewing machine, embroidered dishcloths and absolutely everything that has to do with 1980s pop culture (i.e. leg warmers, scrunchies, big hair, early Madonna, boom boxes, wood paneled walls, stonewash jeans, etc).
If you believe in Happily Ever After and improbable love stories, chances are I'll love you too!!
It's been 4 long years since Stone made one of the biggest mistakes of his life and was sentenced to prison. But today he gets released - and the only thing he wants to do is find his brother & explain what really happened the day that stole the love of Con's life away forever. It's all he has left anyway since no self-respecting woman wants to be with an ex con. All that changes though when he meets Evie...
God, this book was phenomenal! Before I say anything else, I just want to say THANK YOU to Ms. Brent for not keeping us waiting too long after that epic ending of CROSS. And what a follow-up it was! Stone and Evie were absolutely perfect for each other, and it was awesome to see Stone in love. (I never knew he could be so sweet! *SWOON*)
And if, like me, you're anxious to see what happens between Stone & Con - all I'm going to say is that you're gonna be surprised! Plus, we get to check in with all the other #Gentry Boys and their families - and there are a few surprises there, too!
Now I have to figure out how I'm going to make it until July for EDGE!
Loved Stone's story. I wasn't too sure about him in earlier books, but her grew on me so quickly in Cross and knew that he was going to be tormented with guilt, grief and loss. But I think what surprised me the most is that his book wasn't full of the old "I'm not good enough for her" trope ad nauseum, thank goodness. Yes he thought that initially but Evie quickly sorted out his shit. Which brings me to her, she was such a fabulous heroine, the best of all the Gentry heroines so far.
This is what was going through my head the entire time I was reading this book...."slow and steady wins the race, slow and steady wins the race, slow and steady wins the race, etc., etc., etc."
Stone, was released from prison after four years, and was a completely changed man. Seriously, I could not believe the change in him. And as much as he changed, imagine my surprise when finding out Conway changed in a much bigger way than I ever expected!! It really threw me for a loop because I had favored Con before this and now it was Stone! That's due to some great writing!
Their estrangement left me bitter and frustrated. They needed to reconnect and start building their brotherly relationship again. But with so much hurt in the past, it was especially hard for Conway to move on from it.
Like I said, this was a slow, steady read. Stone was reemerging into real life and handling himself so unbelievably well. His unexpected connection with Evie was perfection since she was also estranged from her twin brother and they just seemed to get each other. Their honesty with each other was refreshing. Of course, the Gentry boys, including Deck, were all involved in helping Stone and I loved just having them around with all their children! They were such a great support system for Stone. Secrets are finally uncovered in this book and I won't tell you whether or not Stone and Conway finally connect, but just know, I will be anxiously awaiting Con's story.
This series as a whole is just great! Love me some Gentrys!
Stone... There are no other words to describe him, other than, The Perfect Man!
He reads, he's not afraid to show his feelings, he's the epitome of hotness.
Evie is smart, funny, kind, and to Stone, she's irresistible.
I love that these strangers, with unfortunate pasts, have come together and fallen in love. The Gentry boys are super sweet and look after each other.. There's not one that I don't love!
This story to me shows that no matter what you've gone through, there is always a chance to make things better, to fall in love and be happy.
It's everything an amazing book should be. The writing is incredible, the words, sentences and chapters flow smoothly..
Stone has matured a lot and changed in equal parts, his character development surprised me a lot and I liked him a lot, Evie is so sweet that she is one of my favourites, I liked his story because there was maturity, romance and realism without getting boring.
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review of Walk by Cora Brent
I absolutely adore Cora Brents Gentry boys serie and walk didn't disapoint.
I hate spoilers so there will be none in my review.
The novella Cross gave us readers some insight into what actually happened the fatal night when everything went so horrible wrong.
Walk gives us the story from Stones point of view
Walk started out strong with the story of Stone and Evie, after 4 years in prison all Stone wants is to be free and have his brother back into his life. He didn't expect Evie❤ the strong honest and caring girl that he can't stop thinking about. After all he has been through it's not strange that he's changed. He's more observant more broody and he apriciates life in another way as the little things counts. I really love what Cora did with his character he's absolutely swoon worthy❤
I knew ever since I first read the summary of Walk that I would have another Gentry favorite besides Creed and Stone is certainly meeting my expectations❤ I've read the entire Gentry boys serie and i would strongly recommend that you read the other books before you read Walk because everything that happens in the previous books makes everything in Walk so much more clearer.
Cora,as always, writes with a heart tugging emotion and has the ability to make you forget about time when you're reading her books. I had to put down Walk several times to just process what I was feeling. Walk is very well written and I love how Cora introduces new characters and connects with old ones that you had almost forgot about.....
From the minute I started to read Cross I knew I was going to LOVE Stonewall Gentry…he had that certain air to him, a bad boy but with a big heart and very protective of his brother Conway. The story of Stone carries on from where we left Hold. Stone is a changed man, he’s no longer the loud, carefree manwhore, he’s quiet, guarded and just wants to find his way back to his brother. But it’s not quite that easy, Conway is also a changed man.
I loved Stone and Evie, they had that type of love you don’t take for granted, trust, respect and soul baring love, even though Evie had her own issues they were there for one another 100%.
This book is going to crush you, but leave you happy, contented but very emotional, especially near the end…shhhh… saying nothing else lol. I loved getting more of the Gentry boys and really can’t wait for Conway’s book. Hurry up July!!!!!
Cora Brent is an AMAZING author that breaks your soul but very carefully repairs it. Another amazing must read!!!
I liked it. Walk is a steady paced story with great characters and no heavy drama or angst and hot in all the right places.
Stone is one of the Gentry boys, just leaving prison after 4 years and his main goal now free is to make amends with his brother Conway.
Evie comes across as a sweet lonely girl who also has a brother in prison and both Evie and Stone have a similar bond to find peace with family.
There's glimpses of characters from previous books so if you have a favourite Gentry boy you still get your fill.
Walk shows Evie and Stone getting to know each other progressing to love and leading to a hea, what every reader wants in a contemporary romance. A fairytale come true.
Looking forward to Conway's story, another Gentry brother who is yet to find love.
I freaken love Stone Gentry, it was nice to see a different side of him. Instead of the player he was all those years ago. I dont for one second blamed him for what happened to Erin. I wish she would of never taken off her seat belt. But things happen. And I guess even tho they can be extremely painfully they happen for a reason. We may not like or agree with that reason. But it is what it is. Plus Erin was suffering from own he'll only stone and roe knew about. I'm sure if Conway found out he would be even more broken. I also love Conway. I know he's hurting more than anything. And I get way he's living for the rush. It's dumb tho because life is short. He should know this. But when you lose the one you love. I think your world just stops. I'm very grateful that evie gave stone the second chance he deserved. It was accident but stone will paying for that accident his whole life with regret.
I feel like of all the Gentry boys, this one was the most rewarding. I felt like I needed this one the most, because I needed something to go right for Stone. I feel like i'd been waiting on this one forever, and then I couldn't bring myself to read it for a while. It's one of those where you know you have to emotionally ball up, cuz it's going to be heartwrenching and sad. I'll admit, everyone said the novella was the heart breaker, but it wasn't for me... I mean, sure it was sad... but this one was worse for me. Two brother's at odds over tragedy... a mistake....an accident. I killed me that these two brothers who'd been the only light in the a dark childhood, didn't have each other anymore. Strength in brothers, I understand that I have three brothers that I'd literally kill for...
Stone had grown up so much in his four years in prison. Now, fresh out, he had one thing on his agenda... to find his brother... however, that was proving pretty difficult, because Con just didn't want to be found. Instead, he finds Evie. Evie has to be my favorite heroine in these stories and that's sayin a lot, next to Truly. She's funny and sweet and she cares about Stone so much. She's exactly what he needed.... exactly what he never had.
I loved catching up with the other guys, all the Gentry boys and their lady's and babies. I swear I'm a sucker for all of them... Stone, in his before days, reminded me so much of Chase... now he reminds me of Cordero. I'm so happy that things ended well for him and I really hope things heal with his brother more so than they have already. I'm not sure about reading Con's just yet... I didn't care for Erin's bestie in the novella and Con is really hard to like right now. I'm not sure, again if I'm emotionally prepared for the beating I know that he's going to give. We'll see though, I reckon...
This one was the most deserving of 5 stars. Hands down, my favorite! <3
These books are all so good! Loved seeing the post-prison side of Stone! Evil was great and together they found their way. Loved them. can’t wait to read Conway’s book too!
4 to 4.5 very solid stars for the latest Gentry Boys story. While a standalone it helps to read the other stories so when you see the triplets, Deck, and Conway mentioned you have some history. I appreciated seeing the triplets and Deck reappear, see them happy, and see their continued strong family ties. For a family that grew up with such sh*t parents, the bonds these boys have brings a tear to the eye.
For me the story started out strong with Stone leaving prison, seeing Evie in the diner, and then meeting Evie. There's some insta-lust there but some of that may also be Stone just getting out of prison too. Doesn't quite explain it from Evie's perspective unless it's the loneliness she mentions. Heck it could be simple attraction between the two also. Not a darn thing wrong with that. It's romance fiction after all.
I loved Stone. He made a horrible mistake. He was sorry and didn't hide behind it. He wanted to be a better person for himself and for Evie. He wanted to make amends to his hard-headed brother, Con. He wanted to be a part of his extended family while earning his own way. He wasn't looking for handouts or blaming the world. This was a young man, a H, who was trying to do the right thing after a horrible accident. A well-written H who I really, really wanted to have his HEA.
Evie wasn't a bad h either. Loved her family, loved her friends, and loved Stone. Maybe it happened to quickly but their acceptance of each other (easier for her than him), their support for each other, and their love made this a sweet story. When I finished the story I went "ahhhh, that was sweet" because it was. Maybe things got wrapped up too easily for Evie and Stone but if anybody deserved a freaking HEA it was Stone.
Can't wait for Con's story even though I wanted to kick him in the a$$ for most of the book. He redeemed himself at the end when it became clear how much he missed Stone, how much he was still hurting, and in his own way he wanted to keep Stone safe. "Strength in brothers" really means something to the Gentry family.
OMG...there must be some pollen in the air because my nose is red and my eyes are all watery...no wait, it's Cora Brent and all her sentimental words and all the feels I'm getting knocked me on my behind! When I read Stone, Conway and Erin's novella it crushed my heart...such a sad story of two brothers locked in a town with so many secrets and lies and the one girl they both loved in their own way. Walk begins as Stone is being released from his 4 year jail term and attempting to re-enter society, without his brother anywhere in sight. This book turned me upside down, inside out and then thankfully, righted me again...but not before we learn about the tragedies that Stone's new flame Evie endured, the lies and betrayals of the Gentry men come to light and Stone must settle a score with his absent and very much changed, brother Conway. I absolutely love how Cora Brent gets inside her characters and pulls out emotions in her readers because you GET what she's saying, where she's coming from and have probably been there yourself at one time or another. A beautiful and tragic book that leaves me needing more (Conway and Macon's stories please!) but at least ends on a lighter note of forgiveness and hope.
***** 5 ***** "the sins of our fathers and brothers bonds" stars
I love everything that Cora Brent writes and the Gentry boys hold a special place in my heart! This book is no exception. Stone Gentry has spent four years in prison for a misunderstanding. He has strikes against him automatically in the town of Emblem because he is a Gentry. His brother Con hates him and believes the worst about him. Stone leaves prison determined to turn his life around and become a good person. He meets Evie Dupont and even though he thinks that she is beautiful, funny, and smart he also believes that he is not good enough for her. Evie sees beneath the label of ex con and realizes what a good man that Stone really is. This book allows us to spend time with all of the previous Gentrys and catch up with what is going on in their lives. We also get to see a little about Con Gentry and the pain that he has carried around since the accident that took the life of his girl and sent his brother to prison. I was so happy to see these two brothers come to a place where they could begin to rebuild their relationship. Strength in brothers! I look forward to reading Con's book next.
Stone and Evie were the perfect way to bring back the love after the heartbreak that was "Cross". Evie wasn't looking for love in the road side diner on her birthday when she stopped for a lonely piece of birthday cake, but that was what was fated it seems. She had just been plugging away at her life. Work, friends, trying to comes to grips with a tough a family situation - when the enigmatic Stone Gentry showed up in her life. She sees something special in him, and knows that dispite his reservations about his past they could be explosive. Stone has been locked up hot 1513 days. Since that fatal night which took Erin from Conway and consequentially Conway from Stone - he has been trying to be better. He tried from behind bars to make amends no avail so now that he's out he is determined to repair what was broken. Along his path he encounters the beautiful smart kind Evie, a total 180 from the girls he used to go for. He knows he should stay away and has nothing to offer such a gem, but his heart wants what it wants. He spent 1513 becoming a better man, now he just needs to reap his rewards.
After four long years inside, Stone is finally free. Evie and Stone have unknowingly crossed paths a couple of times, but it isn’t until Evie’s friend’s wedding where Stone is working that the actually meet. Stone automatically figures that Evie is too good for him, but his past doesn’t shock her or bother her in the least. If you have read Cora’s books as I have then I have to believe that you are as much in love with all of those hot Gentry men as I am. Walk is simply amazing! You will be fine to read this book even if you have never read one of her books before, but I bet if this is your first Cora Brent book, it won’t be your last!! She hooks you and does such an amazing job at creating characters that you are going to fall in love with. I love her style of writing. I can’t wait until the next book to get Con’s story!!
I can never get enough of the Gentry Boys! After reading Cross I couldn't wait to read Walk. Your heart sort of breaks for Stone for just life handing him a shitty deal. He is trying to be better and make good life choices and then the unexpected comes along in the form of Evie. She is smart and witty and has a sad story too. I can't wait to read Edge and hope there is more Gentry Boys (maybe one day we will get a book about the kids!!)
When I finished reading about the older Gentry boys, I simple assumed how the younger 2 Gentry cousins were going to turn out when I started to read WALK, however I was completely wrong. Stone Gentry turned out to be a character that caught me off guard. In addition, I was happy to read up dates of The Gentry Triples & their wives, plus Deck & Jenny with all their kids as well. They have become The Gentry Tribe as coined in the several times.
I've been all over this whole series and falling for the Gentrys right and left. But this one is my new drug. As soon as I finished I wanted to read it all over again. Stonewall Gentry is beyond even Deck who had become my previous favorite Gentry. Cora Brent absolutely killed it with this one.
A surprisingly tender and mature story about a Gentry boy who found redemption before the first page. Recently paroled Stone Gentry is already worlds apart from the reckless, cocky kid in the previous books. How he slowly rebuilds his life and tries to reconcile with his brother spirals slowly and gorgeously.
dang stone completely changed after prison. liked how he opened his eyes and learned how short life is. great plot to this story. sad im about done already with this series. love these brothers.
It was a damn good book. I hate to think of how Stone got to where he is and it was so weird to see the how the roles of the brother's personalities reversed. It took a lot of getting used to, but I get it. I understand Conway's pain and the path of self-destruction he's on. It hurts my heart what he lost and I'm torn in two that I do want him to be saved but I wish it was Erin instead of someone else. I wish none of it had happened. I wish that these brothers could have what they used to have. I think what I enjoyed most was that the author took a different route from the path she normally takes with her books, she took her time in establishing that there was something that pulled this couple together that wasn't sex. They had a friendship, one that they were physically attracted to, but a friendship and a bond that went beyond the necessity of sex showing them the way to open to their hearts to the other. I love that Stone kept himself in check and made sure Evie knew he was being a d*ck because he cared for her and that she was different from the rest. That was his whole persona now, he was committed to making sure that he didn't hurt anyone else in life. He didn't want to be who he was before the accident. His time in jail made him think, made him grow up, made him a better person. He cared about anyone and everyone, where before, he didn't give a damn about anyone but himself and his brother, and Erin right before she died. Even when his brother is at his lowest and his worst, he never gave up on him. He refused to let him drown alone. He doesn't know his pain over Erin's death but he knows how it feels to not care about anything, to be on a dangerous path because it's what everyone expects you to do, to drink your sorrows away, to smoke to de-stress, to sleep around with faceless bodies because it's a moment of escape, to get off on adrenaline rushes half hoping that you die. He knows because he was him four years ago.
Evie was awesome. I sympathized with her over her brother and couldn't help but hurt right along with her when she had to accept that she needed to let him go and live her own life. It was a little weird at first when Stone invited her to his family's get together considering he didn't even know her at all himself, but other than that, the rest of it was good. I loved that she didn't let him get away with how he treated her. She understood but didn't let him think it was ok. There was another time where I felt she should have taught him a lesson by walking out on him after something he said to her that was a hurtful low blow. I get why she stayed though and don't hold it against her. He was hurting and lashing out and deep down she knew he didn't mean it but even hearing those words out loud can hurt. I just feel that it would have been good for him to make sure he thinks twice before he opens his mouth in an argument, especially if her heart is in the right place and she's trying to protect him any way she can. She was incredibly patient with him and understanding above all. She was mature and thought things through without jumping to conclusions or lashing out in anger. I think that's what I loved most about her, her maturity in her actions spoke so much more than words could. She immediately recognized that he didn't leave her to find his brother because it was none of her business, he left her to keep her safe and because it was something he needed to do alone with his brother. She was a good friend to people that didn't deserve it and looked out for them. She was just amazing all around and it was such a relief to read about a heroine that didn't behave like a childish brat, play immature games to get a man's attention, get jealous over stupid things or other girls, but rather someone who acted their age, was put together, and kept it real.
I enjoyed this addition to the series and will gladly read it again in the future. I loved Stone and Evie almost as much as Creed and Truly. Now for the last book, I have no idea what to expect but I'm going to go into it, no expectations. I'm not going to look for reasons to hate it but I'm not going to be super duper excited either. It's a book that I've been dreading reading since the fourth book and I'm half tempted not to read it just so I don't have to accept that Erin is really gone and Conway will move on with someone else. Well, I've already come this far, so I guess there's no turning back now. Here's to hoping I don't go to bed angry tonight after reading Conway's story...
A continuation of the Gentry boys.. Oh my, I love this series.. Stone is paying for an accident he didn't commit. He's lost more than just his freedom. He is picking up the pieces of his broken life when he meets Evie. Evie is battling her own familial demons and coming to terms with her own grief and loss. Can they find peace and forgiveness together? Read to find out :)
I'm utterly obsessed with this series. Now we're learning more about the "cousins". Stone's story started with Deck. Then there was the accident. The novella "Cross" told of the accident in a bit more detail. This takes place after the aftermath of the accident. So basically 4 years after the core of the Gentry Boys books.
Stonewall was not the Stone from Cross. He's changed. Conway isn't the same either. They're not close anymore. Obviously. But there's hope. That's good.
I really loved this book, it felt quite different from the other Gentry books but loved how it shows Stone's transformation and new values compared to his younger self and the love between him and his brother. Evie was great too! she was a lovely well rounded character who didn't cause drama but added a lot to the pairing. Excited to see what's in store for Conway next.
