The gift of Forgiveness was not what I expected. I admit that it was my own fault for not noticing the author. I was ultimately led astray by the title of the book (The Gift of Forgiveness: A Magical Encounter with Miguel Ruiz). I thought this was another offering from Miguel Ruiz. It is not. I read The Four Agreements in 2023 and it was very useful and applicable. This however It was written by an understudy of Ruiz…if you want to call him that. It seems like the author, Oliver Clerc just went to a conference offered by Miguel Ruiz and was used as an example in one of Miguel’s “demonstrations.”
On top of being duped, I also disagree with step 2 of the “Gift of Forgives.” This is not Oliver’s fault as he was just re-telling what had happened to him and sharing his change of heart. Step 2 is to ask forgiveness from both God and the devil. As a Christian I strongly disagree with this position and consider it blasphemy. The devil does not hold power to forgive or to pass judgment. Satan merrily has the power to deceive, steal, and kill. He is not to be prayed to. It was hard to stay engaged with this book after I was encouraged to ask forgiveness from the devil. However, I do think it is important to forgive others, ask for forgiveness from God, and ultimately forgive yourself from past sins. Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins and carrying around hate, bitterness, shame, guilt, ect will hold you back from experiencing the love of the Father and from loving others. Oliver kind of gets to the heart of what it means to forgive but he still misses the beauty of forgiveness. He mentions Jesus once near the end of this short read. Giving this book 2 stars. I would say don’t waste your time reading this book, your time would be much better used reading any of the gospels (Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John). Go straight to the source.
