My brother is an idiot. He won the lottery and invested all of his money in a run-down bowling alley. Since he’s barely making it, he moved in with me. Great. Having him around the house isn’t the worst thing in the world, but he does make a mess like nobody’s business. My friends Zeke, Jessie, and Kayden keep me sane but there’s only so much they can do. And it’s definitely not the worst thing in the world when his old friend, Ryker, moves to town. The second I lay eyes on him, I’m hot under the collar. He makes my body burn in longing and freeze in desperation at the exact same time. When he talks, I don’t listen to anything he says because I’m staring at that hard jaw and those kissable lips like I already own them. But he’s a bed hopper. A playboy. A heartbreaker. I’m all down for some hot, sweaty, yummy sex even if it doesn’t have a fairy tale ending. I’ve been down that road before. I know the drill. But with Ryker, it’s different. Because I know I’ll fall in love with him. For now, I’ll steer clear of him and keep my hands to myself. It can’t be that hard, right? Or can it?

I’ve often been told I’m not a picky reader and that’s the reason I mostly give 4 and 5 star ratings. Nothing could be further from the truth. I try choose my books carefully because a) who wants to read something they don’t enjoy and b) who wants to write about it knowing that someone put some real effort into creating the book and that a bad review could affect their livelihood.
So if you didn’t figure it out with my two star rating you probably did with my previous ramblings. I had read E.L. Todd’s books before and felt the plots had potential, but I ultimately stopped because I wasn’t keen on the writing and characterization. Reading through the reviews I thought I might take another chance, the blurb looked interesting but even though I’m in the minority I honestly can’t rate this one higher.
The initial set up for the story was very confusing. Were there two guys talking raging at each other? I was put off by this initial back and forth. Upon getting to know the main characters, I found them inconsistent and in need of better development. I disliked how they behaved and talked throughout the book. The plot was almost nonexistent. It was mostly sex with the major plot twist being that of love triangle that didn’t even get exposed much less resolved because the book ends with a sort of cliffhanger. It could also use stronger copy editing.
I couldn’t relate with the attraction between Rae and Ryker and how the playboy magically decided to be a monogamous, serious relationship kind of guy while Rae fought against it. The sexy times were plentiful but lacked chemistry.
I was also rubbed the wrong way having two major subplots. Rae’s and her brother’s, and while it’s an interesting twist to have the heroine’s point of view and that of her brother’s instead of the hero’s, Rex’s takes attention from what I would have considered the main story.
I will say that Rae has a kick@$$ job. Really, that alone bumped the rating from one star to two. She’s a researcher for a recycling company whose job was to decrease the amount of waste being deposited in landfills by creating products that are either recyclable or biodegradable. What an awesome thing to do! I would read the entire trilogy just to see if she comes up with anything interesting.
Ray of Light is book #1 in the Ray series by E.L. Todd. It is a contemporary romance. Told from two points of view, the heroine and her brother’s, and ends with a cliffhanger.
* I was given an ARC of this book courtesy of the author. The excerpts taken from that copy. *
Siblings, you can’t pick ‘em, but you just have to love them, in spite of themselves. To watch Rae and Rex together is like watching a slice of reality, because in the end, right or wrong, all they want is what is best for each other. This time, though, Rae wishes her big brother would just butt out and let her swoon over his old buddy Ryker, hot, sexy, Ryker.
Settle in for a few laughs, a few eye rolls and few moments when you can barely get enough oxygen as Rae and Ryker practically burn down the house with their heat and passion. E.L. Todd can write, no doubt about it! Ms. Todd puts a special zing into everything she touches with her pen and RAY OF LIGHT is no exception!
A quirky and loyal group of friends, a brother struggling with a new business, clueless as to how to resuscitate it and Ryker, a masculine hunk of passion who know how to take Rae to the moon and back.
Feel like one of the gang as they banter back and forth, enjoy life and stand together when the going gets tough. Told through both Rae and Rex’s point of view, this fresh and furious tale of love and friendship, family and loyalties is a fun romance that takes a while to get off the ground, but when it does, can you say, “We have lift-off?”
So, how does Rae help out her over-protective brother, juggle her own schedule, find time for friends, heal her broken heart, enjoy the temptations Ryker offers without ending up with a broken heart and learn to trust again? Sometimes life has a way of working things out for the best, maybe its Rae’s turn to live life in the fast lane, who knows what lies ahead?
I received this copy from E.L. Todd in exchange for my honest review.

Soooo good but ended on a cliffhanger... sigh. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay I have to admit something right here. I cannot believe that I have never reviewed a book by this author on GR. I know I have read her works before, but nothing is here....
So it is with great pleasure that this book landed in my review requests. I love the author's writing style. I love the way the characters interact and know each other so well. You can feel the pain of regret from Zeke; the over-protectiveness and love between siblings. And then the steamy hot heat that is burning up the sheets between Rae and Ryker. So flippin hot and delicious! YES!
This book sucked me in from page one and while it ended on a small cliffy, which I figured out was coming, I know that I will be first in line for the second book in this awesome new series!
Fair warning... block out the time once you start this one. You will not want to stop reading.
This story has an akward POV, but I have to give it to the author it was intrigueing. I read it cause it was a pure mistake LOL. I thought it was an MM novel! Then I had to reread and reread the first chapter then it made sense, it wasn't an MM, but I couldn't drop the book so I guess there's no harm reading it.
The last book was released this April 2017 and I was curious what was fuss all about but then I had to go waaaay back to the first book to figure things out. So here I am.
Rae was a normal girl not that clingy type but she does one night stands, enter Ryker which she first met by pure chance. The second time they met well it was another funny thing cause they actually knew each other's friends. Well a girl can only resist for sometime you know, so the hook up happened.
Ryker was so drawn to Rae he can't resist the chemistry between them. So he pursued her and then their feeling developed for each other. Little did anyone know that there's a side friend who had been secretly having feelings for Rae.
That was just it. I guess their story continues in the next book but I was just anxious to finish the first one, I lost the appetite for the second book. Maybe some other time.
“You’re such a piece of shit. Shut your ass and pick up after yourself.”
Ray of Light was my first read by E.L. Todd and I’m curious to see where this series goes…
Many loved this book, yet I found myself on the line of liking it and loving it. Ray of Light is a dual POV story told from Rae and Rex’s perspectives, which I wasn’t expecting. The synopsis doesn’t give any hints of dual POVs so When I started the first chapter and saw Rae at the top I was expecting the next POV to be Ryker’s. I really wasn’t expecting to be getting Rae’s brother who bought the run-down bowling alley. Due to the dual POV we get a real inside look of the relationship between Rae and Rex, while they seem to hate each other its actually deep love and appreciation…they just don’t often show it and decide to banter with each other like teenagers.
So what sold me on Ray of Light? Ryker. Hot, damn. I really enjoyed Ryker’s character and honestly I’m not sure why this wasn’t dual POV from Rae and Ryker instead of Rae and Rex. Their “relationship” is what kept me going. While Ryker is a playboy I found him to be 100% likeable. The steamy times were AMAZING!! However, I was left with wanting more from their relationship and their development.
While there were moments with some repetition and questionable sentences, I felt E.L. Todd writing style was great, making this a quick light and at times humorous read. Ray of Light ends on a some-what cliffhanger, it’s not a suspenseful cliffhanger but more so leaves readers with a general curiosity of what’s next for Rae, Rex, and Ryker. Especially since it hints at something with Zeke that was so obviously from the beginning.
Would I recommend Ray of Light? Ray of Light is a light read with some awesome steamy times and a likeable playboy.
I received an ARC copy of this book. Since this is my first ARC, I’m hoping this means that this book will have some heavy-handed editing before the final copy is/was published.
1.5 stars, because I enjoy a smut book just as much as the next person. BUT I still need descent writing. I don’t expect a work of genius, but I also don’t want to get an eye sprain from rolling my eyes at the terrible writing style found on every page…
Writing style: Issue one: constant repeating of words or phrases, both within consecutive sentences, and also between scenes that happen chapters apart:
- “He pushed my body and mind to the edge of ecstasy. I was at the edge and about to fall…”
- “…watching the look in his eyes as he undressed me. He looked me in the eye…” then two sentences later: “The same intensity was in his eyes…” UUUGGH think of something else to say!
- “Rae is going to be swept off her feet eventually… I need to make a move before it’s too late.” Then three pages later, “I know I need to say something soon. I’m afraid if I wait too long, she’ll find someone else.”
- At location 460 a character says “Anytime I look at Rae, I think of a wombat trying to take a shit.” Then at location 850 we learn that they’re going to a concert by a band named the Wombats. This book does not take place in Australia. There is no connection made for us as to why wombat comes up twice in completely non-correlated circumstances, and it was just too weird of a reference not to complain about.
Issue two: The “Really?! Who tf says/thinks that?” moments:
Upon first glance: “…the ratio between his waist and shoulders was perfect.” Also upon first glance: His eyes were “like emeralds I wanted to hoard.”
Issue three: Telling us instead of showing us:
“He knew me well enough to combat anything I said and turn it around on me.”
Issue four: Things that just Don’t make sense:
- Upon just meeting: “I laughed at the memory.” REALLY? You two have no memories, you JUST met!
- “It was a lot of tedious work because it was time-consuming.” NO. TIME-CONSUMING DOES NOT EQUAL TEDIOUS. Faulty reasoning, and also the blandest description of a main character’s job ever given. Ever.
- After telling us that the guy is four inches taller than her, she thinks: “He stepped closer to me, towering over me with his height.”
- “I measured it with my fingers and realized it was nine inches.” Yes, because we all have tape measures in our hands that allow our brains to Realize the length of items.
Other issues:
I have a giant pet-peeve against using “bitch” as an insult. So on page TWO when this gem appears: “I wanted to murder him in cold blood… I wanted all the glory for getting rid of this annoying bitch.” before we know who the characters are, or why leaving a mess would warrant such an insult/anger, I was immediately put off.
Also, the set up of the first 5 pages was extraordinary confusing. I thought we were reading a BDSM scene about anal play between two people who hate each other (second sentence of the whole book is “Shut your ass…” and continues on with “hooking his boxers…” and “I kicked his boxers at him” and “your face smells like ass”) but what we’re really reading is just a sibling tiff? Awkward…
I read to the end of this book because I got it as an ARC, but I really wish this wasn't the case...
Yea that kinda ages me. That was a gag line from a radio show that was way past reruns when I first heard it. But it applies to E. L. Todd’s Don't Worry, It's Just A Fling (Ray Book 1). I got it hoping for some light reading comedy. That is has some naughty parts may be to its advantage, but there is so much trope sex in print, that mostly readers find one they like and accept that there is not so much dramatic tension, just some number of pages until or between bedrooms. For the entire field, the spoiler alert is that there is almost never a spoiler and apparently the readers like things that way.
So, the check boxes. consensual, alpha male (tho an intelligent one) educated woman, most likely HEA (eventually, after more than one book), billionaire, workplace and conventional beauty. Maybe some others, I have not learned all the initials and groupings.
Rae, a corporate scientist allows herself an overnight only to find she crumpled the sheets with the new owner of her company and close friend of her brother. I wish I could say hilarity ensues, but to me it was the usual introspection, uncertainty and letting the loins lead. And she has a nice pet dog.
This was a great start off to this series. And I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I loved the back and forth banter between Rae, Zeke & Rex.
After a chance run in with her brothers high school friend Rae & Ryker hook up but, she's well aware that he's a player and refuses to give in a second time until Ryker changes his tactics and realizes he actually wants to date her.
Rae is funny, strong, independent & very loving. Ryker is very intense and I can't wait to find out why he's the way he is.
Even all the supporting characters are great. I'm dying to know what will happen between Rae's best friend Kayden and her brother Rex. And poor Zeke, I loved him and am interested in how the story will unfold for him.
voto 3.5 Salve lettrici.
It was a super quick, fun read. I loved Ryker but I'm not Ray's biggest fan... My problem? I didn't know it was a series. I don't like series about romance. If I'm going to read about a romantic relationship, give me a stand alone. I enjoyed the book but I won't continue with the series, it's just not my thing.
Meh.... It was alright, there was some issues I had, like they never talked and when Ms.Todd described him it's like he has anger issues and possession issues meh ... The cliffhanger if u can even call it that was not a cliffhanger at all!
Having to take her brother in after failing his business and being paired with an awful date, Rae's life is making her pull her hair out. Well, until she accidentally met Ryker. He's sweet, gorgeous, and easy to talk with. But what are the chances that the hot guy she ran into is going to become more than a stranger who she was dreaming to have a one night stand with?
She's no newbie in the hit and run kind of deal with guys, though what she isn't expecting is to fall in love with the newest playboy in town.
EL Todd is a very new author to me and this is her first book that I have read. Now, here goes my review...
HERO Ryker is a very likable hero. I liked him quickly when I first read his scene. He is sweet, and I actually had no idea he was a playboy. He was real smooth too when he tries throwing some pick up lines. He can be real cute at times and extremely hot in a few flip of pages. I also loved how honest he is with his feelings, and how he pursued his girl. Just, swoon!
HEROINE Ryker was easy for me to like, but I'm a bit conflicted with the heroine. I love reading about strong women, and Rae is one tough gal. She fights for what she thinks is right, she works hard, and she knows how to deal with the men around her. She really gave me a nice impression in the beginning of the book. However, her being tough went from "atta girl" to "uhm, that's too much". In the first few chapters, I noticed she easily gets annoyed by almost everything and she always voices it out. Maybe it was supposed to be funny, but I'm actually sad that maybe there is something wrong with me, because it didn't work. I think her character just needs more balance, that is all.
STORY Ray Of Light is a sexy romantic comedy. Again, it really breaks my heart that I didn't find most of the tiffs or scenes here so funny, like the other readers did. Actually, I was more of confused. Also, there were too many characters thrown in early chapters that I'm losing my focus on the hero and heroine. It was a very sexy read, and I think this book will really work for others. I find it promising, but I think the story development could still be improved. When I was reading, I was actually looking for "more". Like more genuine connection with the MCs and less dialogues with the secondary ones. It also ended in a semi-cliffy (I'm not even sure if that's a word). So, no clear ending was given. If you'll ask me if I'd read the other books, I think yes. I need to know what happens next to Rae and Ryker.
Whenever I have to give stars like this, I go like...
Anyhoo, we're all different. We enjoy different books and love different stuff, so maybe this didn't work for me but I still encourage you to give RAY OF LIGHT a try. You might like it better than I did. Ciao!
ARC graciously provided by author E.L. Todd in exchange for an honest review.
This was refreshing and fast paced read. Told in dual POV between Rae and her brother Rex.
Our heroine Rae is very different with nothing stereotypical about her. A scientist who has allowed her bother to live with her rent free, she is a confident and self professed tomboy, grounded and comfortable in her own skin and socialising with men. I loved her character and her approach to life!
Her relationship with her brother is very different. They fight all the time and the verbal slanging matches they exchange daily would really make you wonder why she let him live with her. As the book progresses you see that they really do have each other's back but have a strange way of showing it.
A few of the chapters are told from Rex's POV, and he is a lazy slob whose only redeeming qualities are his love for his sister and the great friendship he has with his best friend Zeke. How he gets all these random woman to sleep with him is beyond me.
Zeke is a support character I really loved. His close friendship with both Rex and Rae sees them both consider Zeke as family and their best friend. I do wonder how his unrequited love will play out.
Enter Ryker - extremely good looking, arrogant, rich and the ultimate play boy who also happens to be a former very close high school friend of Rex. This man whore takes a shine to our Rae and she is under no illusion of who he is and what he is capable of giving. But can Ryker surprise both Rae and himself and change from playboy because he has finally found the woman he want to start a relationship with........ well we will have to see what happens in the 2nd book In the series ( Ray of Hope ) I really hope so because these two together were great together and scorching hot in the bedroom.
Note: Copy provided by the author in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
There is something about this author's writing that just doesn't gel for me. The editing is rough around the edges for the most part. I've read a couple of her other books and I felt the exact same way that I do after reading this latest release. This is a three-book series and all books are available now. Readers will appreciate knowing that because this first one ends on a so-called cliffhanger (although it's not one of those "wowzer" types.
My biggest problem with this story was way too much quick fast and meaningless sex without substance. The main characters I refer to as the three-Rs -- Rae, Rex and Ryker. The story is told in Rae and Rex's POVs. Ryker is the hot hunky, bad boy/playboy -- and Rae's brother's best friend. There are some funny lines -- but way more rambling that goes nowhere.
I note that I am in the minority, and I'm sorry that this author just didn't work for me, but I won't finish out this series, nor will I pick up another book written by her.
I was walking my German shepherd through the park when my dog took off and snapped the leash out of my hand. He sprinted down the path until he made friends with some stranger.
Some damn hot stranger.
Ryker.
We flirted back and forth, and then he went straight for the kill and invited me back to his place. I totally would have said yes, but I already had a date for the evening.
But he didn't ask me to see him some other time.
I hid my hurt at the rejection and moved on with my life.
Ryker and I crossed paths again in the way I least expected. He's still just as sexy and charming, and this time, I made sure I didn't have a date for the evening.
I actually really liked this h. Rae was witty and funny and knew exactly what hat she was doing and wasn't whiny about it or a door mat. Our hero was just ehh for me. I felt like Rae stole the whole show for me. While I'm not a fan of cliffhangers in anyway I'll have to pick up the next book because it has a pretty solid story. Totally enjoyed it
Long. Boring. Too much talk about sports and basketball. Some of the characters seemed pointless. Why are they there. And too many meet and greets between the heroine and heroin before the main plot twist of him being her boss. DNF
Im going with 3.7 but bringing up to a 4 star read. I think it's absolutely hilarious hearing siblings and their banter in this story Rae & Rex do not disappoint. I don't know who's team I want to be on, the best friend Zeke or the stranger in the park turning out to be CEO and the boss of Rae also known as Ryker. I want to cheer them both on for different reasons because they're both great guys. I enjoyed the story and the outcome Rae decides. Want to know which man she chooses? Need to one click to find out.
This book could go for 3 stars - funny thing is perhaps author have mix signals between main characters and supporting characters so it’s not per se dual POV but h and her brother , it’s rather confusing and this waste of times as you can really get the grip of H characters made him like a passing by personal which only demanding sex with h It’s has a great plot going but wouldn’t waste my times on second book….
Series about a group of friends who start relationships. Changing POV. For the safety gang, intimate scenes with whoever the person is with at the time.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Rae has a big brother, Rex, and three friends in her life; Jessie, Kayden and Rex's best friend Zeke. The dynamic in this friendship is so close, they tell each other everything... or do they.
Rex has been living with and off of his sister, Rae, because he's broke. After winning the lottery, he bought a bowling alley, though he's never bowled a day in his life. But he's messy and doesn't have a plan for his future.
When Ryker, an old high school friend to Rex and Zeke, and known womanizer, moves back into town to take over his father's business, the group dynamic gets thrown for a loop. Especially when it looks like Ryker and Rae may be getting close.
There are secrets being held back between these friends, feelings that get unintentionally hurt.
This was really funny in parts and really sad when you realize that these friends are so afraid of losing each other that they aren't saying what they really feel and want. But by doing this they are hurting themselves more than anything else.
I can't wait for the next installment to know what happens.
I was looking for something new to read and i decided to click on the details tab of one of my books in my nook app to see what was recommended. That’s how i found this one, and i’m on the fence about how i feel.
We have a sweet story about a group of friends that find themselves at a point in their lives when they’re all grown up, there may be feelings for some that are either unrequited or unknown, and there’s great sexual tension amongst quite a few.
We start off with our leading lady Rae – she’s a scientist by day and a great friend and sister by night. We quickly learn that her older brother lives with her because he has no money – after investing his lottery winning into a bowling alley that needs more help than he can afford. We quickly learn though that there’s more to their story than just a nice sister letting her brother crash. We get their family history in the form of learning that their mother killed herself when Rae was 15, and her brother Rex who was 18 took guardianship over her and became brother and father.
Rae meets a hot guy one day while running with her dog and when she doesn’t take him up on his offer to just go home with him right then, she thinks that the connection is over. Little does she know that he’s going to be in her life in a far more complicated way.
Enter Ryker. Not only is he the hot stranger, he’s high school friends of Rex and their friend Zeke, and he’s also…….the son of the man who owns the company that Rae works for, and therefore her new boss. Well, before she learned that last bit, she crossed paths with Ryker a few more times to know that the attraction is real, and despite her brother’s pleading for her to stay away from Ryker, she scratches that itch and then things get interesting.
So there’s that one romance situation going on and it’s entertaining to watch how that plays out. Then there’s another prong to this triangle in the form of Zeke and his crush on Rae. He’s just about decided to admit it all to Rae when she tells him about her and Ryker and basically crushes his soul.
That’s not enough though. Rae has two friends who are part of their crew, Jessie and Kayden. Jessie is gorgeous and can get any guy she wants, yet she wants Ryker. Oops! Then there’s Kayden whom we learn is also fairly smoking hot, and also has a crush on Rex, but no one else realizes this.
So you can imagine the entertainment that a reader can get watching all this play out. What i’ll say is that this is a book that didn’t take much brain power for me, which was nice given that i’m exhausted from work these past two weeks, but it was also a bit immature for what my taste tends to be. The ‘kinky scenes’ weren’t really deep enough and felt more like college kids hooking up than grown ups. That doesn’t ruin the story, just a different layer of ‘heat and passion’ than i’m used to.
So we’re left off in a point in this story where there’s nothing dramatic really happening. Things are changing for everyone, and there are decisions that have to be made, but there’s nothing that feels like a cliff. You can read the next book or not is basically the sense, and while that’s good (since i mean – we all know i’ll read book 2), i feel like it’s not mandatory to do right this second. So….i guess i can say that i’d love to see if anyone else has read this and has an opinion. and if you haven’t read it, do so and let me know thoughts.
