About the author

Tamil language Novel Writer, Journalist, Poet & Critic late Ramaswamy Aiyer Krishnamurthy also known as ‘Kalki’. He derived his pen name from the suffixes of his wife name Kalyani and his name Krishnamurthy in Tamil form கல்யாணி and கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி as Kalki (கல்கி). His name also represents “Kalki avatar”, the tenth and last avatar of the Hindu God Vishnu.

His writings includes over 120 short stories, 10 novelettes, 5 novels, 3 historical romances, editorial and political writings and hundreds of film and music reviews. Krishnamurthy’s witty, incisive comments on politics, literature, music and other forms of art were looked forward to with unceasing interest by readers. He wrote under the pen names of ‘Kalki’, ‘Ra. Ki’, ‘Tamil Theni’, ‘Karnatakam’ and so on.

The success that Krishnamurthy attained in the realm of historical fiction is phenomenal. Sixty years ago, at a time when the literacy level was low and when the English-educated Tamils looked down on writings in Tamil, Kalki’s circulation touched 71,000 copies – the largest for any weekly in the county then – when it serialised his historical novels. Kalki had also the genius to classify the historical and non-historical events, historical and non-historical characters and how much the novel owes to history.

This novella by Kalki is a short snack compared to the seven course meal of his other classics. I had difficulty in processing the construct of the book - of story within a story within a story and found myself questioning the need for it.

The main narrator is an Indian exile from Burma who narrates a tale from his voyage back by ship. He narrates to a man he meets at a theatre and the initial conversation is around the Burma situation and the chaos of the exile. Suddenly the book shifts to a abandoned island story and we meet a mysterious couple who start narrating the story of a love story set in the times of Chozha-Pandiars. The story of course then takes over with Kalki displaying his Tamil skills of beautiful descriptions and sounds.

While the story in itself makes you curious as to where it is headed, you get put off time and again by the island setting conversations.

Not the best - but then even a sub-par is high above on the literature scale for Kalki.

Mohini Theevu is a fantasy fiction novella by master story teller, Kalki. While the story is set in the present, which happens to be during the World War II time frame, Kalki transports us to a fantasy island with a story that goes back by several hundred years to the Pandiya & Chola kingdoms. Kalki has spun a delightful yarn that can effortlessly trap readers in his fantasy world from which it would take an extraordinary effort to come out.

This review is for the English translation.

Kalki’s Mohini Island is a blend of science fiction and time travel. One night, a ship stalls on Mohini island and one of the travellers alights to explore the island. He walks around and encounters a part of the island filled with ancient sculptures and towers. Suddenly he meets a man and a woman who narrates the a short love story between Pandya princess Bhuvana Mohini and the Chola prince Sukumaran.

Isn’t that intriguing?

I never thought Kalki would disappoint me. But this story did. Or let me be precise, the translation of Kalki’s book did. I’m sure if I had read “Mohini Island” in Tamil, I might have continued to be mesmerised.

But Ra Ya Chellappa’s translation left much to be desired.

Mohini Island (orig: Mohini Theevu) is the titular story in this collection of short stories. Pressed on by curiosity to see what happens to the couple I managed to finish the first story. I tried to read the second one and although the premise was equally fascinating I couldn’t plough through it.

Keeping this review short and hoping I find a better version of this book to read someday!

Being a big fan of kalki, I chose this short novel in order to finish in a couple of hours. It's really a wonder that even though I finished the book in 2 hours, the content and enchantment of the story can be compared to a 1000 pages novel.
The way the author combines history and imagination is out of the world.

ஜப்பான் பர்மாவின் மீது போர் தொடுத்த சமயத்தில் அங்கிருந்து தப்பித்து தமிழ்நாட்டிற்கு வருகிறார் பாஸ்கர் கவிராயர். அந்த கப்பல் பயணத்தின்போது இலங்கையின் அருகில் உள்ள ஒரு தீவைப் பார்க்கிறார். அது தான் "மோகினித்தீவு". அங்கு சிதைந்த நிலையில் உள்ள மணி மண்டபங்கள், கோவில் கோபுரங்கள், கல் சிற்பங்கள், விமானங்கள், புத்த விகாரங்களைக் காண்கிறார். அங்கு அவருக்கு ஏற்படும் வித்தியாசமான அனுபவத்தை ஆசிரியரிடம் பகிர்வதே இந்த கதை.

"பார்த்திபன் கனவு" புத்தகத்தை விட இந்த புத்தகம் என்னைக் கவர்ந்தது. கற்பனையும் உண்மையும் கலந்து ஆசிரியர் எழுதிய முறை எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்திருந்தது. இது ஒரு beginner friendly read. அனைவரும் வாசிக்கலாம். அட்டைப்படம் அருமை.

Kalki is one of the master story teller. He proves that in every book that I have read so far. Mohini theevu is a short book discuss about Pandiyan dynasty and Chola dynasty and the politics and war revolve around it. The story takes place 700 years back. Give it a read, you won't be disappointed.

பல நாட்களுக்கு பிறகு ஒரு தமிழ் புதினம் படித்தேன் இ‌ன்று — அமரர் கல்கி கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்தி 1950ல் எழுதிய மோகினி தீவு என்னும் குறும் நாவல்.

இது ஒரு வரலாறு மற்றும் கற்பனை நிறைந்த ஒரு அழகிய காதல் கதை (historical fantasy romantic fiction).

இரு நண்பர்கள் சினிமா அரங்கில் எதேச்சையாக சந்திக்கின்றன. பின்னர் அதில் ஒருவர் பாஸ்கர கவிராயர் — பர்மாவிற்கு சென்றுவிட்டு தாயகம் திரும்பியவர்.

கவிராயர் மெத்த படித்தவர். கதை, கவிதை, இலக்கிய புலமை அவருக்கு அதிகம். அவர் தனது நண்பரிடம் தான் எவ்வாறு பர்மாவில்ருந்து தப்பித்து கப்பல் வழி சென்னை வந்தார் என்பதை சொல்ல தொடங்கினார்.

ஜப்பான் பர்மாவின் மீது குண்டு வீச தொடங்கிய போது கவிராயர் அடித்து பிடித்து ஒரு சரக்கு கப்பலில் மீது ஏறி தனது பயணத்தை ஆரம்பித்தார்.

ஆனால், அந்த கப்பல் ஒரு ஆள் இல்லாத தீவில் தஞ்சம் அடைகிறது, ஜப்பானியர்கள் தா‌க்குத‌லுக்கு பயந்து.

அ‌ன்று இரவு கவிராயர் தனியாகப் மனித சஞ்சாரம் இல்லாத தீவில் ஒரு காதல் ஜோடியை பார்கிறார், பின்னர் அவர்களிடம் பேசுகிறார்.

It is just a short story and can be completed in less than two hours. For the man who wrote the magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan, this book is like a small snacks from him. But as usual it is another beautiful written book from him. He as usual takes us 700 years back to ancient Tamil Land in such a ease. It is a pity that it is a short story. Must read for Kalki lovers.

மோகினி தீவு என்ற தலைப்பிற்கு ஏற்றவாறு ஒரு தீவை பற்றியும் ஒரு மோகினி பற்றிய கதைதான்.
பாண்டிய இளவரசி புவனமோகினி பற்றிய கதை.
ஒரு தீவில் ஒரு யுவனும் யுவதியும் காதல் வாழ்க்கை நடத்தி வந்தார்கள்.
முன்னுரையில் ஒன்றும் புரியாத ஒரு ஆங்கில சினிமாவிற்கு சென்ற நபர் தன் பழைய பர்மா நண்பரை சந்தித்தபோது அவர் கூற ஆரம்பித்த கதை தான் மோகினி தீவு.
பர்மாவில் இருந்தபோது ஜப்பானிய சைன்யம் நடத்திய போரினால் ஒரு கப்பலில் மக்கள் அகதிகளாக பிரயாணம் செய்ய நேர்ந்தது. அவர்கள் ஒரு தீவில் தஞ்சம் புகுந்தனர்.
கப்பலை விட்டு அந்த பர்மா நண்பர் மட்டும் ஒரு இரவு முழுவதும் தீவிலே தங்கிவிட்டார். ஒரு பூரண சந்திர இரவில் அழகான மாட மாளிகைகள் கூட கோபுரங்கள் இடையில் அவர் சந்தித்த அழகே பொறாமை கொள்ளும் யுவதியும், அவளைக் காதல் செய்யும் யுவனும் இருந்தார்கள்.
நீங்கள் யார்? என்று அந்த பர்மா நண்பர் கேட்க ஆரம்பித்தபோது அந்தத் தம்பதிகள் கூறிய கதை தான் தொடக்கம்.
உத்தம சோழனுக்கும் பாக்கிரம பாண்டியனுக்கும் ஏற்பட்ட போரில் பாண்டியன் வெற்றி பெற்றார். உத்தம சோழனை தேர் காலில் கட்டி இழுத்து மதுரை நகரங்களில் ஊர்வலம் செய்தார்.
ஏன்?அப்படி செய்தார் என்றால் பாண்டியன் மகளான புவன மோகினிக்கு சோழன் மகனான பட்டத்து இளவரசன் சுகுமாறனை மணம் முடித்து வைக்குமாறு கேட்டார்.
சோழன் பாண்டியன் மகளை இழிவு படுத்தியதால் நேர்ந்த போர் இது.
பிற்பாடு சோழன் சிறை கைதியானார்.
சோலை இளவரசர்கள் கொல்லிமலையில் தஞ்சம் புகுந்தார்கள்.
ஒரு காலத்தில் கரிகாலன் தஞ்சம் புகுந்த கொல்லிமலையில் சித்தர்களால் கரிகாலனுக்காக உருவாக்கப்பட்ட கொல்லியம்பாவை ஒன்று இருந்தது.
கொல்லியம்பாவை என்றால் கரிகாலனை தேடி வரும் எதிரிகளை கொள்வதற்காக வைக்கப்பட்ட அழகிய நங்கை போன்ற கத்திகளை உடைய இயந்திரம். எனவே கொல்லி மலைக்கு இப்பெயர் வந்தது என்பது போன்ற கதைகளும் உண்டு.
அங்கு கொல்லிமலையில் சிறை சென்றுள்ள சோழனை மீட்க இளவரசர்கள் மற்றும்மேலும் 20 வீரர்கள் இருந்தனர்.
அவர்களில் யார் சோழனை மீட்க வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு போட்டி வைத்தார்கள்.
அது வேல் எரியும் போட்டி.
சுகுமாறன் தான் அதிக தொலைவில் வேல் எய்தினான்.
எனவே அவன் மாறுவேடம் பூண்டு பாண்டிய சிற்பியிடம் சிற்ப வேலையில் ஈடுபடுபவன் போல் வேலையில் சேர்ந்தான்.
புவன மோகினிக்கு தன்னால் நிறைந்த சோகத்தால் மனம் உடைந்து இருந்தாள்.
அந்நேரத்தில் சிற்பியிடம் சோழ தேசத்தை சேர்ந்த ஒரு இளைஞன் பணியாளராக வந்திருப்பது தெரிந்தது. எனவே அவனுக்கு சோலை இளவரசர்கள் பற்றி தெரிந்திருக்க கூடும் என்று நினைத்து அவள் அங்கு சென்று சிற்பியிடம் பேசி அவனை சந்திக்க விரும்பினாள் .
இளவரசன் மதிவாணன் என்ற பெயரில் அங்கு இருந்தான். இளவரசி மீது மிகுந்த கோபத்தில் அவன் இருந்தான். அவளை சந்திக்கவே அவனுக்கு விருப்பமில்லை.
எனவே இளவரசி மாறுவேடம் பூண்டு வாலிபனை போல் அங்கு வந்தால்.
பிறகு இருவரும் நண்பர்கள் ஆயினர்.
ஒரு கட்டத்தில் இந்த வாலிபன் பெண் என்பது அவனுக்கு தெரிந்தது.
அவள் மூலமாகவே சோழனை மீட்டானா இல்லையா என்பது கதையில் வரும்.
இதற்குகிடையில் அவள் மீது அவன் காதல் கொண்டான். அவளும் தான்.
இதில் எனக்கு ஆச்சரியம் என்னவென்றால் தனது சௌகரியங்கள் பட்டத்து இளவரசன் பதவி பொன் பொருள் என அனைத்தையும் விட்டுவிட்டு ஒரு சாதாரண பெண்ணாக மாறிய யுவதிக்காக யுவன் வருவானா?
பின்னுரையில்
"சிறிது யோசித்துப் பார்த்தால் அந்த நண்பருடைய கதையில் அவநம்பிக்கை கொள்ளக் காரணம் இல்லைதானே! வெளியில் நடைபெறும் நிகழ்ச்சிகள் மட்டுமே உண்மையானவை என்று நாம் எதற்காக கருத வேண்டும் கவிஞர் ஒருவனுடைய கற்பனை உள்ளத்தில் நிகழும் அற்புத சம்பவங்களை உண்மையல்ல வென்று ஏன் கொள்ள வேண்டும்?"

Mohini Thevu - Best book you can choose for quick read. 80 Pages novel with gripping plot.
Kalki begins as conversation between two bored Audiences at a Cinema theatre who later ends at a beach. Conversations turns into story telling of one’s lifetime experience of visiting a Island somewhere below the Sri Lanka. A Writer who forced to take a trip to India from Burma aka Myanmar due to outbreak of war. Unfortunately or fortunately he get to travel in a old crowded ship.Due to Fear of bombers captain of the ship takes them to near by island.
Beauty of the island invites everyone to it but few along with captain travels to the island. Where captain explains his earlier visit to island and take them back to ship. But writer wish to spend some more time before the ship continues its voyage so he hide himself behind the trees.
Captain and passengers takes the row boat and ride back to the ship. They realise they left someone behind but due to sunset they decide to stay back in ship till dawn.
Writer revisit the spot he enjoyed few moments back and experience something strange events.

How those strange events impact him? Did he able to return back to ship? What story is awaiting for the writer to tell his friends is all about the story.

Author Kalki needs no need of introductions but unfortunately he is not with us. 70+ years passed but his works could speak for him.
I personally feel his works in Tamil literature could be translated in English so people can enjoy his works. Though they are still best sellers and collectables of Tamil Novel readers. His legendary works about RajaRajaCholan aka Ponnien Selvan is benchmark of modern literary.

MOHINI THEEVU BY KALKI

I must say, beginning was hard for me. After 10 years, this is my first ever Tamil book. I wanted to give up as I'm such a fast reader when it comes to English. But I so badly wanted to read books in my mother tongue.

The story is picture perfect for a kollywood movie. The language made it easy for me to dive into the story. The description of Mohini Theevu was fabulous. I felt for Mohini. I shouted at her to not do what she did. With just 10 chapters it's a dacenet read to get started with Tamil/Kalki novels.

The plot revolves around Chozha Prince, Sugumaran and Bhuvana Mohini, the princess and daughter of Parakrama Pandiyan. The love between them is beautiful and it doesn't matter than it was predictable. The story reminded me of Remo and suddenly I couldn't stop laughing at the thought.

"என் கண்மணி! உனக்காக ஏழு உலகம் ஆளும் பதவியையும் நான் தியாகம் செய்வேன்"

The reply from Buvana Mohini, "ராணியாக வேண்டும் என்ற ஆசையிருந்தால் தேவேந்திரச் சிற்பியின் சீடனுக்கு என் இதயத்தைக் கொடுத்திருப்பேனா?’

Mohini Theevu is a short romance novel. Although it is a surprising low-fantasy genre, it sufficiently has Kalki's usual elements of properly capturing emotions of characters, dealing with Kings and their shortcomings, poetical words, plots and schemes.

The first half of the book was a page-turner, and Kalki captures regally of every characters' issues. Especially that of conflicts between Chola and Pandya Kings, and how wars are taken on whim.

Although, the romance didn't capture me too much. And the glorification of romance at the cost of people dying in war makes the novel a mere exaggerating poetry. I was quite disappointed that Kalki forgives everything that has happened in the cover of romance, even the lives of common man.

Perhaps, the problem is with me, who wants to see all the nuances rather to simply enjoy the novel.

The story narration is in Kalki's style of native dialect which the modern current generation can also understand. The story begins in some theatre and then as a conversation between two known people which then goes as sharing of another person's journey from Burma to TamilNadu. That journey happens to have another story as a conversation which remains as the entire plot. It starts somewhere and ends in a different plot. In between the story plot is quite predictable. The end leaves the readers to question themselves whether to belive that journey plot as real or fictional. Unpredictable story could have given more suspense and I would have given full ratings for that. I am not fascinated with the end prediction to be of readers' choice. If you are looking for a quick read, to finish a book in a day, you will might be entertained with this book. I liked that part too - short novel.

Mesmerized right word to use...wow what a writing, am fan of Kalki,,,actually i was even more proud of that, after reading this book.. i would suggest this book is a good read if you are at the age of 14 to 23, I don't suggest this Book for the people after that age because the exiteing hormones might have faded by the age of 23 or 24...So young lads need to read this ...may take only 1 day to complete this novel.. Ill assure goose bumps are waiting.... " Un pavala vaay thiranthu varum amudha Moziyayi Parugiyallava naan ithanai kalam kalatchebam sithu varugiren" Just read, you can flatter someone by using the words from this book......

I listened to the audiobook version of this by Bombay Kannan and co which was just over 2 hours long. This is my first Tamil audiobook and it was a wonderful first. As I listened to it lying in bed at night, it brought back memories of when my mum would tell us bedtime stories.

The reading cast did an excellent job - they read emotively and at a quick pace that kept me engaged. The background music was also apt and provided an immersive experience.

As for the story itself, I savoured the clever plot, the low-fantasy elements and the rich settings. All these gave the feeling of having read an epic novel, sans the length. Looking forward to reading more of Kalki's books.

The language made it easy for me to dive into the story.

Best book for beginners. Although, the story is quiet typical like any other love stories and the climax is predictable, Kalki's use of words will make the reader to enjoy the journey of 'Mohini theevu'. This story Basically revolves around the divine love between Chola prince and Padavas princess whilst rivalry between the latter.Still, I recommend the readers to read this book before reading the classic novel 'Ponniyin Selvan' to completely enjoy this story.

Fresh off completing Kalki’s three monumental historical fiction series, I picked up this novella with eager anticipation and it did not disappoint. True to Kalki’s gift for weaving eras together, the work unfolds as a story within a story: in the present, set during the turbulence of World War II, a narrator encounters the legend of a Chola prince and a Pandya princess.

In short, it’s a slender book with a mighty soul, a proof that Kalki could craft magic in both sprawling sagas and compact gems.
