Garrison Rex is a complex man He has a muscular physique but also a rotund pot belly. Some think him a doltish brute, yet they have never heard him play one of his original symphonies on the harmonica. He reads books per hour and loves all animals. He is a champion who is born of all races, but also none. The killer who does not kill, the fighter who will not fight, yet he is also the one-man war… He has many stories, but this novel is his greatest adventure yet.

This book consistently conjures a distinct kind of happiness and humor, one that is hard to define. You know when you're watching a fantastic action film for the first time - say "The Matrix" or "Die Hard" - and something ridiculously cool and exciting happens - Neo dodges bullets or McClane leaps from an exploding rooftop - why is it that you smile, if not cheer? Was that particular moment funny or happy? Yet still a big smile, laughter and/or applause are common human reactions to such killer action sequences. Though these parts are not "funny," viewers have the same reactions as when hearing a great joke or seeing a silly comedy.
So however that odd chemical mix of exaggerated adrenaline/comedy works in pumping pleasure to our brains, this book works at that level of ridiculousness. Times a thousand to the max.
Operating as an odder and schlubbier version of say Batman, Chuck Norris, Jack Reacher or the Most Interesting Man in the World, Garrison Rex is the newest superhuman who has no particular special powers, other than being the ultimate human. From otherworldly smarts and masterful fisticuffs, the character is provided a novel spin from the usual heroes by several strange quirks and bizarre behavior as well as a sometimes unhinged passion. The narrative also indicates that the character is neither particularly fit or handsome either. And to complement his towering persona, he is frequently aided by an adorably badass canary sidekick who is legendary in her own right too.
The story moves in a fairly traditional progression of fantastic scenes until a stunning turn triggers its epic finale. Its easy to picture the author trying to invent a laundry list of greatest action sequences ever, since this book reads extremely fast with its nonstop chases, fights and shootouts as every cliched action setting is visited here with an extraordinarily over-the-top silliness.
While this may be one of the author's simpler works that even older children could enjoy, it's also one of his most fun. This ridiculous book is a hilarious must for action/comedy junkies.
