Title: Theodore Roosevelt Author: Sibyl Hancock Illustrator: Joseph Ciardiello Genre: Biography Grade 2-5 Theme(s): Determination, Wisdom, Strength, Honesty Opening Line/Sentence: Young Theodore Roosevelt of ten woke in the middle of the night. Brief Book Summary: Goes through the life of Theodore starting when he was 10 years old and how he could never really run around because of his asthma. Theodore then got classes and learned to fight back because he was so small. He studied politics in college then met his wife Alice Lee. His political platform was honesty. He moved to North Dakota then to New York. McKinley chose Teddy to be his Vice President, and was soon shot after, so Theodore became president. He won a Nobel Peace Prize for his part in ending WW1. Response to Two Professional Reviews: I could not find one single review on this book, probably because there are thousands of books about Theodore Roosevelt, and this one doesn’t seem important enough to review. Evaluation of Literary Elements: The text is very large and the pictures are very simple; perfect for 2nd graders. The picture on every page is a great summary for the current topic in the story. Vocabulary is well appropriate for it’s intended audience and the factual information is perfect for keeping students engaged. Consideration of Instructional Application: This would be a great book for a week long read-aloud, if ever the situation presents itself to learn about Teddy Roosevelt. At the end of the week we can have a reenactment sort of thing where students can act out specific events outlined in the book.
