Anna Burns, a beautiful barmaid is murdered. The chief suspect is Perry Webster, a York University philosophy professor who is from an upper middle-class background and who recently, unexpectedly became her fiancee. Innocent, grief-stricken and drinking too much, Perry seeks the real culprit from among a colourful selection of characters who frequent the pub in York where Anna worked. Incited by the malevolent attentions of a Detective Inspector who believes him guilty and aided by Anna's diary, Perry's investigations lead him into a murky world of individual conceit, personal greed and financial corruption where people, including possibly Anna, are revealed to be not what they seemed. He increasingly attracts the threat of physical violence, at one stage escaping to a 'castle' in Ireland owned by the rich family of his best friend. There he meets Theresa, the housekeeper, who begins to help him put his life back together. On returning to Yorkshire after the murder of one of the suspects and homing in on his quarry, the physical threat escalates and his survival is uncertain. The surprising denouement depends as much on his capacity to think logically as it does on his ability to avoid losing his own life in the process
An unpredictable and intelligent murder mystery. Great new author, a classic in the making. A philosophy professor turned private investigator manages heartbreak, blackmail and hitmen as he tries to solve the murder of his girlfriend. Brilliantly written, evocative and stylish, with compelling characters.
I have a question about this book. Perry talks about Anna’s diary and said he couldn’t give it to the police because there was something in it about him. What was it?
I really enjoyed this well-written and engrossing mystery. The idea of a philosophy lecturer making his own amateur detective investigations was enjoyably done. I warmed to the main character and his friends, and felt drawn into the world the author has created in a slightly fictionalised York. A really good start to the series.
Perry Webster was a person to seek his understanding how he surprised his lost of his lover. His friends and family were close to him to support him as he grieved for her and investigated who had taken him from her. The story has many details to cover, and the story is extremely engaging. I truly enjoyed this book.
Suspenseful and gripping, mysterious and somewhat sad in places. A well told tale of murder and intrigue, suspicious characters and finding oneself. Well worth a place in your library.
