Maxine never liked Brent. She thought he only liked her because he thought she was different. She thought Brent only saw her as a challenge and a trophy.

For Brent, though, it was serious. To him, Maxine was the only girl he wanted, and it frustrated him. To him, Maxine did not see him at all.

This book had me in tears more than five times! Despite all the emotions it stirred up, I can’t quite give it a 5/5, and that's largely due to the immaturity of both Max and Brent. 🥹 While their love story was deeply moving, there were moments where their actions and decisions were downright frustrating. It was hard not to feel exasperated, especially since so much of the drama could have been avoided if Max had just said “I love you” sooner! Seriously, the book could have wrapped up a lot earlier if she hadn’t held back those three little words for so long.

I found myself torn because I genuinely loved both characters, but their immaturity kept me from fully embracing their journey. It’s like they were their own worst enemies, creating unnecessary obstacles in what could have been a smoother, more satisfying love story.

That said, it was still a great read overall. The emotional rollercoaster kept me hooked, and despite my frustrations, I couldn’t help but root for them. It’s a story that stays with you, even if it doesn’t quite reach perfection.

Reread. Not recommended for me.

Rated it 3 stars just because of how annoying Maxine’s attitude is. LOL.

It’s been ten years since this book was written, and it remains a classic, cliché YA romance novel—cute and light, fitting perfectly within the Jimenez Cousins Series. My thoughts on its plot and manuscript are similar to those I had about NPP. Having this book included in the From The Archive boxed set is a real treasure for every JSL who has read and been a fan since that era. Rereading this version brings a wonderful sense of nostalgia.
