Words have power, everyone knows that. What few realize is the power that lies in silence.
Unable to speak, Leesa lived in isolated silence for sixteen years. And then she met Eron. Through a unique talent, her beloved can hear her thoughts. A member of a clandestine group, Eron hopes to overthrow the city's tyrants. But when he asks for Leesa's help, she makes a mistake that leads to the renegades' discovery. Eron is thrown in prison for life.
Leesa will do anything to right her mistake. But the deeper she delves into the situation, the more treacherous the footing. And soon she may face a fate much worse than Eron's.
(This prequel is set 300 years before the main Shattering of the Nocturnai series.)
A pretty decent story. Apart from a few jaring moments in the narrative, but on the whole, it's well told. I'd have liked it longer, to be honest. And I would have liked to have read about the parts that happened within the 5 years wait. We always want more, don't we!
I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
Leesa is unable to speak and lives as a servant girl. Usually, no one understands her, but when she meets Eron, he can hear her thoughts. Eron wants to overthrow the city's rulers, who torment the citizens because of their power. However, he is imprisoned, and now Leesa must take on his mission.
This story is a prequel to the Nocturnai series, and boy what a good prequel it is. I loved this short story, including the characters, and the setting of a world ruled by tyrants.
The only issue I had with the story was the spoiler about Leesa, but I was willing to overlook that for the beautiful storyline. I just wished that the spoiler would have never happened.
I would recommend this prequel to anyone who would like to read an entertaining and mysterious short story with a mute main character.
When this book first started, I loved it. Leesa's snarkiness was perfect. As time went on, the book went from 5 to 4 stars. I was still enjoying it, but I didn't quite like the direction it was going. The ending -- last 10 minutes or so of the book dropped it to three. I don't like seeing people become what they dislike in others. That didn't sit well with me. The very ending seemed entirely unplausible. Okay...this is something of a fantasy, so saying that that part was not plausible might seem odd -- Leesa's expectations just didn't fit with typical human nature.
I know this is a prequel, and that the next book is like 300 years in the future, which leaves me with questions that I don't know whether or not they will be answered. At any rate, I liked it enough to read the next book in the series, and we will go from there.
I have read this book and the first two books in the series. I love the characters and the story lines with the twists and unexpected sudden traps. It was a fun read and I can't wait to finish the series! I believe teens and adults alike will love it as much as I do. I'm a readaholic and am constantly on the look out for new fantasy, drama, supernatural, suspence, paranormal, and scifi books. This series has made my number 12 top list in adult reads and it hit my number 5 top list in teen reads! I stumbled across this series by accident when looking up another author who also goes by Carrie and found this little treasure and decided to check her out. Who doesn't love paranormal and suspence? I know I do. Happy reading!
As a novella prequel to a series, this book was a good read- mainly because it didn’t feel rushed at all, as the three parts it was set in conveyed a change of time easily. The main character, Leesa, definitely grows as the time moves on and she makes some surprising choices!
Her love interest, however, doesn’t get much time on the page as he’s arrested in Part 1 and she doesn’t see him until five years have passed in Part 3.
There’s a small amount of characters but they’re all written really well so the writing flowed nicely and I enjoyed reading the book.
I’m definitely interested in reading the series but I might wait until my TBR has gone down a bit first.
Although this reminded me of "The Bird and the Sword" by Amy Harmon, I was very intrigued. The prequel consisted of three parts, which represented a different time for Leesa, and each section gave just enough information to continue the story even though there were big gaps between each section. It was a perfect prequel to set you up for book 1 in the series; excited to start it.
I really enjoyed this book. Carrie is a new author I've never read before. The way she told the story of Leesa and how she rose to power was great. She was very detailed with her descriptions f the characters and places. I can't wait to read the next book in the series .
Sooo I got this prequel on Instafreebie, and I got to say that it's really intriguing! It's a shame that it's really short and some bits and pieces (of explanation) are missing. I enjoyed reading it anyway!
Silent Queen (Shattering of the Nocturnai #1), my third (short) read from author Carrie Summers was a different of a storyline than her Chronicles of a Cutpurse series. I can't wait for the next book with these characters to see where the storyline takes us. I highly recommend this book!
I gave it a chance because I liked the synopsis: not all YA books have a mute main character. I liked her, and I liked the novella, even if sometimes it skipped scenes so fast. I didn't even expect the final nor the plot twists. In fact I really enjoyed it!
Love this short novella. Love the narrator. Khristine even more. This story is all about revenge , saving the person you love and even though you don’t know where it’s coming always look for pay back
Khristne is one of my favourite performers. I usually finish hers in a day
This appears to be a great introduction to the "Shattering of the Nocturnai" series. Well written. I look forward to reading more. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
I have never read anything from this universe and I got this one for free on audible. I really liked this book. It was fascinating and well crafted despite the length. I was impressed.
One word: DRAMA!!! There were a few things with the main character that confused me but ultimately I enjoyed this and the ending definitely took me by surprise!!
This was a great introductory novella to a really interesting new world of classism, oppression, and dark, mystical power overseas. It felt very unique and refreshing to me. I especially loved the main character. I loved how human and believable she was and the power she found in her mute silence. I look foreword to the rest of the series and really hope to learn more about what happened to Leesa after the end of this novella!
Intriguing introduction to a new fantasy world. Even at a short novella length, Carrie Summers did a wonderful job of both introducing a character to care about but also built a strong and believable world.
This short novella written in first person was interesting but a bit slow in the beginning. It did pick up the pace and offered a few surprises. There is a time gap at the end that I wish the author would have filled in with what transpired.
