The Doggies Almanac

Rate this book
The Australian rules football Footy Almanac has been printed every year since 2007. It is the printed release of the footy almanac website's yearly contributions, where contributors wax lyrical about the marvelously Australian indigenous football code of Aussie Rules.

In 2016, the miraculous happened. After 62 years, the Western Bulldogs (formerly the Footscray Football Club) won the AFL premiership for only their second time since joining the VFL/AFL in 1925.

In sporting terms across the globe, 2016 was the year of the victorious underdog! The Western Bulldogs joined the likes of Leicester in the EPL, the Chicago Cubs in the Major League, the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA, and the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL to break long standing sports championship droughts.

The Bulldogs also won the AFL Premiership from the unlikely 7th position in the finals, playing and winning four amazing matches against quality opposition.

As a result, the editors of the 2016 Footy Almanac decided to dedicate the entire contents of their yearly periodical to the amazing Bulldog victory, along with celebrating the romance, fortitude and sheer exuberance that has enveloped the club and supporters, that has at times had to battle to keep existing and relevant in modern sport.

This was such a beautiful tribute to the year of the Bulldog, 2016, written by the club's faithful supporters who have waited so long and could hardly even dream of the success we had that year. Yes, we, as I count myself among that number.

I smiled, I cried, and felt like I was right back in the thick of it again. If you don't follow AFL, and you don't have a soft spot for the team of the might west, this book won't mean anything to you. But for those of us who bleed red, white and blue then you have to get your hands on this.

Just try not to think about 2017. Or 18. Or 19 while you're at it.

Enjoyed reliving the season through other supporters eyes. Reminded me of how good our team was in 2016. To play 39 players on the list. To play 4 finals and 2 of them interstate and to win! Any other season 15 wins would have placed the dogs in the top 4. Reading this has made me keen to write our experience throughout the season and those 4 amazing finals. The Dogs are premiers in 2016.
