Space Cowboys #2

Pushing the Limits

Rate this book
Mills & Boon Blaze series promises scorching hot reads...

Survival expert Jessie Odell has faced the most hazardous environments on earth. Training astronauts should be easy. But enter candidate Hemi Barrett and his hot, ripped bod, and suddenly Jessie is breathless with raw excitement — something she hasn’t felt for a long, long time — and it scares her to death.

Hemi isn’t just some sexy distraction. Jessie actually likes the guy — and that makes him more treacherous than an Everest ascent. It also means Hemi’s that much harder to resist. With every hungry, heat-fueled encounter, Jessie skirts closer to that dangerous edge. Falling for this space cowboy is definitely high stakes...but could the payoff be worth the risk?

"Pushing the Limits" Space Cowboys Two is by author Katherine Garbera
Publish Date: January 1, 2017
My Rating: 4.5 Stars

"Pushing the Limits" is the second book in the Space Cowboys' series. As much as I loved the first book, "No Limits," I liked this one better.

Hemi "Thor" Barrett and Jessie Odell.......

Hemi was an amazing character. He was a determined, honest, loyal and romantic man. Hemi was also a astronaut. A sexy, 6'2" rugged, all around perfect hero. At least I thought so. Hemi is in intense training for a mission that will send him, along with a small crew, to build a space station halfway to Mars where he will be in outer space for nearly two years. He has aspired his entire life to this goal. He has worked diligently and relentlessly towards this ambition. Hemi is a top choice for this mission due to his intelligence, skills, and preparedness training. He is so close to this exciting life achievement and there is nothing that will stop him from winning a spot on this team. Nothing will interfere with his focus for success. Nothing will get in the way of his dreams. That is until he meets the one woman he may not want to leave.

One of my favorite attributes of Hemi was how understanding and patient he was with Jessie. He was so sweet, kind and romantic as well. Truthfully, Hemi was a perfect hero.

Jessie is a dare-devil and an a survival expert. She has been on many dangerous and exciting adventures. Jessie is daring and brave and lives for the outdoors and excitement. She is at home in some of the most dangerous environments. This is her life and she loves it. But sometimes tragedy happens. And when Jessie finds herself needing some time away from adventure, she is happy to accept a training position with NASA. Jessie will teach extreme survival skills to twenty-four astronauts who are all training for a spot on the Cronus Mission. A mission that will send them to outer space for close to two years. Jessie is resigned and determined to teach these men and women how to survive the most treacherous of situations.

When Hemi and Jessie meet for the first time, they are instantly attracted to each other. Hemi wants to get to know her better but Jessie is not ready for another relationship, so she keeps pushing him away. Jessie's previous relationship left her pained and full of regret and guilt. Jessie is also strongly dealing with fear. Can she trust her heart to another man? To Hemi? If she lets herself get too close; will she be able to endure the time apart if he is chosen for the mission? Most importantly, if she lets herself fall in love again; will she survive losing Hemi should something go wrong while he's in space? These are all justifiable emotions Jessie has to deal with. She just doesn't know if she is strong enough.

Hemi and Jessie had great chemistry and were a perfect fit for each other. I was rooting for their HEA from almost the beginning of the story. I too, did not know if things would work out. Personally, could I live without my husband for two years, worrying, while he was in outer space where anything could go wrong? I don't think I could. Hemi and Jessie had a tough journey. Even though it was obvious that they belonged together, they had many obstacles to overcome. I loved watching their relationship develop and mature until finally, it was rock solid. The best part.....Hemi's grand gesture. So sweet and romantic. Perfect!

I enjoyed reading this book as well as the first in the series. I am looking forward to the next story. I have my suspicions who that will be about and I can't wait to read it.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced readers copy of this novel.

I really enjoyed this one. Two strong leads-she is a survivalist/adventurer and he is an astronaut. It is set at a training camp for future Mars missions. The relationship progression felt very real. The science and training scenarios also sounded very plausible.
I look forward to others in the series.

Jessie Odell is a wilderness expert, an adventurer and a world traveler whose exploits have thrilled many people who’ve watched her television show. She’s tough, strong and fearless. My kind of gal. Hemi “Thor” Barrett is a born Maori guy. But he’s moved about the states so he’s learned to ride horses. He’s also training to go back into outer space to build a way station. So he’s an astronaut who’s a cowboy.

Hoooookaaaaay. I know that cowboys are hot staple in romances but this twisting to bring that old stereotype into a story about astronaut training is a bit laughable. But we can overlook it. What might make the modern reader cringe is the idea of a trainer having sex with a trainee. After he follows her from a party where they first meet, spars with her, takes a swim with her and nearly has sex with her, she suddenly wants to know how this escalated so quickly.

Yeah, that’s a real head-scratcher, all right. Granted, both of them are consenting adults. But it’s still crossing a line, something they both acknowledge after they exit the water. (Guess how long their resolutions to stay away from each other last.)

Hemi for his part is a bit of a he-man. He can be gentlemanly, kind and thoughtful. But he’s too prone to picking her up as if she were some fainting damsel in distress. (Again, that’s a minor note of contention.) They spend a lot of time thinking about each other. It doesn’t get in the way of their work (phew, thank goodness for that. Being in space is not the place for wool gathering.). But it does mean that a lot of pages are set aside for mental torture over their futures. If they’re not screwing each other, they’re thinking about each other. Excuse me, but I like to know what other people are doing in novels of this sort. There are other candidates for the team positions; what are they up to when Jessie and Sam aren’t boinking? They spend more time talking about Hemi’s tattoo and birthmark than how the other team members are managing.

The plotline of training to get into outer space is unique enough for me to award this romance a slightly higher rating than usual. The substandard writing isn’t.

Book two in Katherine Garbera's Space Cowboys series is another fun one! We delve a little further into the training they have to do for the upcoming space mission and get to see some of the characters from Book one again!

Survival expert Jessie Odell is a take-charge thrill seeker, but she decides to use the time after a personal tragedy to reflect on her life and what more she wants to do with it while throwing herself into a different experience of teaching a course at NASA. She's excited for the opportunity ... and just when things are getting started, she meets one of her students who takes her breath away!

Astronaut Hemi "Thor" Barrett is all man. He's gorgeous, fit and adorably sure of himself and what a distraction he is! Hemi is training for the mission of a lifetime, but that doesn't stop him from falling for his gorgeous new teacher. The differences they find attractive in each other, just might be their downfall when they try to make a relationship work.

It was so mesmerizing! Thoughtful story weaved into an intricate story of discovering love after mourning mixed with idea of holding on perhaps too tightly.

I love space and everything that goes with it. This is the second book in this series. The heroine has certain ideas about what can and can't happen between her and the hero which is also her student. The hero is confident enough of his abilities but what he feels for the heroine is something he's never felt before and thinks she his forever. The heroine doesn't know if she can be impartial because of developing feelings. Then there was the mission he'll be leaving for - its over a year he'll be away but can thy be away from each other that long?

The book was good and an original story line. In parts the plot had slowed right down, but was likable and the same goes to the hero and heroine.
