Madame Dragonfly has been harboring dark secrets for hundreds of years, keeping them locked up in the mysterious Cabin of Horrors. Now that her cabin is trapped on Black Hammer Farm, the only secrets she can collect are the broken hearts of small-town folk. But the arrival of a new visitor to the farm will change everything. “Fantastic.”—Scott Snyder (Batman, Wytches)

You ever run out of Jeff Lemire comics to read? Isn't it the fucking worst? I better pick some more up cause after this I don't have any more on me to read.
Much as I wanna go with Gideon Falls or Sweet Tooth, Black Hammer is probably my favorite thing he's done.
That said I'm starting to note some cracks in the armor. I love this issue but I'm starting to grow weary of how obvious these character homages are. The Swamp Thing and Darkseid reffererences were a bit much for me.
Still doesn't hurt the dynamic at all. Lady Dragonfly seems like a boss and next to Colonel Weird and Barbalien- they're arguably my favorite characters in the series.
There's a great story inside a story here. Though the pacing of it feels like a full-stop/genre change, before we're pulled back into the main story, and then out of it again, and then back into it...etc. So I found that a bit off. Perhaps it is because we're reading this in monthly installments and a trade collection would make the switch more entertaining. When a comic is picked up after a month, a certain level of catch-up is required by the reader. And the shift in narration made that adjustment hard. It was easier when I just dropped what I knew/remembered and treated this story as a first issue.
There is intrigue and I enjoy the new concepts and the problems these characters need to work through. I look forward to seeing how/if that's accomplished. But I'm more passively following along than excited.
