In the near future, the secrets of immortality have been unlocked.
Those lucky enough to live forever reside behind the walls of the Enclave, like seventeen-year-old Xander, who on his next birthday is to be Uploaded into a new, indestructible body, never to age or die.
Then there are those that live in the Outside, shrouded in the miserable shadow of the walled city. For Rachel, fighting to survive is a way of life, but trouble is brewing.
When the two paths cross, the secrets of Uploading begin to unravel. Not everyone can live forever, and as each day passes, the price of immortality grows.
The clock ticks down, and Rachel and Xander are left with no choice but to fight the terrifying Enclave government, who will stop at nothing to preserve their way of life.

Xander is living the life of privilege as the President's son, but all he really wants is to be able to be with the love of his life, Isaac. Isaac is an Outsider, little more than a servant to the Enclave. On the eve of his eighteenth birthday, Xander and Isaac plan to escape from the Enclave before Xander can be uploaded. He doesn't know exactly what uploading entails, but it is supposed to allow him to live forever.
Before the young lovers can make good on their escape, his world comes crashing down. His father is murdered, his stepmother takes over as President and Isaac is most likely dead. Xander barely escapes with his life and hurries to follow a crudely drawn map that Isaac has given him at the last minute.
Rachel, an Outsider just struggling to survive, is drawn into the story when her younger brother, Hugo, gets the grey sickness, most likely caused by radiation. Her brother, Clayton, wants to join the Underground, a group trying to overthrow the Enclave. After Clayton is killed during a coup, Rachel also follows a hand-drawn map to the Underground.
This book is a good combination of sci-fi and dystopian. You have several groups of people, each with their own agenda, trying to make things better. You have an evil villainess, brave revolutionaries, and plenty of action. There is also a little romance and the love of family as a continuing theme throughout the book.
Don't be surprised, because the book ends on a cliffhanger. You will be surprised through all the twists and turns that the author leads you on.
One quote will stay with me: "Sometimes we must choose not what is right or wrong, but what we must do to protect the ones we love." I look forward to continuing the adventure in the next book.
One complaint: This has to be one of the worst covers that I have seen in a long time. I almost didn't give this great book a chance because of the awful cover!
How I Got this Book I bought the Kindle edition of Uploaded for the full price ($2.99) from Amazon.
Summary In a dystopian Britain, the rich elite lives immortal lives inside the last known city, the Enclave, while the poor live grueling lives in the Outside. Two teenage protagonists, Xander and Rachel, live opposite lives. Xander is the son of the Enclave President, slated to succeed him while Rachel struggles to survive on the Outside. However, an unexpected force threatens both - and their world. They both must join the Underground, the mysterious terrorist group, to save what remains of human civilization.
The Good By now, 10+ years since the Hunger Games/Divergence craze, we all are familiar with the YA Dystopian genre. Uploaded surprised me with it's clever defying of the usual tropes, from the gay romance subplot to nuanced discussions of terrorism (the intro scene is simply amazing!).
I also love the abundance of social commentary, most importantly about socioeconomic inequality and environmentalism. Unlike most of the many, many Hunger Games/Divergence copycats, the dystopia of Uploaded actually "makes sense" as a possible result of our current, real-world problems.
The Bad As much as I like Uploaded's setting, I do think there need to be a bit more "show" of the world-building. The descriptions could be improved. For instance, I was confused about what exactly the "uploading" process entails.
Overall 4 of 5 A great, trope-defying YA dystopian novel!
If you are in the Enclave you will live forever with no problems. Humanity has progressed to the point that at a certain age you can upload yourself into an indestructible body. Xander is 17 years old and having doubts about his upload. Once uploaded Xander will lose everything about himself and become just another cog in the governmental wheel. He is determined to get to the underground and out of the Enclave.
Rachel lives Outside in the shadow of the walls of the Enclave where people die all the time from illness and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. She is doing anything possible to keep her family together and alive. But it gets harder and harder every day. Together Xander and Rachel find themselves in the middle of a rebellion. Although neither one of them wants to be part of it they are going to have to step up if they want their freedom.
I love dystopian stories and this one had a fresh outlook on them. You do have the elites inside and those suffering outside. But I like the idea of uploading and how the story talks about the waste we have today.
This is the first book in a series so prepare for a cliff hanger. But as a first book I think James Hughes did a fantastic job. I can’t wait to see what he has instore next.
I received Uploaded from Ari at Candid Book Reviews for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.
I found this first book in this series by James Hughes to be a very entertaining and yet engrossing read. This book was a combination of sci-fi, apocalyptic, and ultimately a battle of good against evil in the war over immortality and immorality. It was also a forbidden love story between two boys, as well as a more subtle love story between another boy and a girl. The ending is a very good set up for reading volume two, which I am looking forward to very much. This is a very very late review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
This isn't something I'd normally read, but it was interesting. The book had a slow start but quickly had me at the edge of my seat. I can't say that I like Rachel very much, not for the obvious reason, but because she comes across as weak and spineless. I'm not a huge fan of the ending but at least the next book should answer the cliffhangers. I received this book free for an honest review and all opinions are my own.
I don't normally read dystopian young adult novels but this caught my attention from the beginning. What would society do when they learn the secret to immortality? Read Uploaded to find out. Zander is the son of the Enclaves President and on the cusp of being uploaded to a new body that won't age, won't get diseases and won't die. Rachel lives Outside and trying to survive along with her two brothers. When Zander and Rachel lives collide they work together to unravel and truth behind the Upload.
I'm not going to lie and tell you all that I read these kinds of books. I generally stay away from them, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this story that I might just have to start giving this genre some more of my time!!
I would classify Uploaded as a dystopian world set far far in the future. I honestly was surprised with the way that Hughes took this novel. When I think of the future I think of superior cities and technology, but that is not what you get when you read this story.
With twists and turns, loyalty is tested and lives are lost. I will definitely be recommending this book to my sci fi fan friends!! Well done Hughes, well done!!
How far is humanity willing to go to achieve immortality? Apparently, pretty dang far.
Xander is having doubts about his upload and his boyfriend, Isaac, may have a way out. Everything looked like it was going to work, until everything went wrong.
Meanwhile, Rachel is trying to keep her remaining family together, but with her younger brother ill and her older bother getting mixed up in something dangerous, that's becoming increasingly difficult.
Uploaded is mostly told from the perspective of Xander and Rachel, two people who just wanted to lay low, find themselves thrust into a rebellion that they never wanted to join.
The premise grips you from the beginning. The idea of uploading yourself into a mostly indestructible body that you get to choose is an interesting and terrifying idea. I just had to know what was going to happen.
If you're looking for a thrilling read with an interesting (and sometimes disturbing) premise then this is your book. The action is well-paced and Hughes does a great job of making sure that the characters don't get lost in the turmoil. We never lose sight of who these characters are as their personalities are reflected in their choices during the action. It's a well done and addictive read.
Adventure, mayhem and the world as we know it coming to an end.
Life in the world we knew now is pretty harsh. If you live in the Enclave you have nothing to worry about or fear. You will live on forever or that's what they say. All those outside of the Enclave perish due to radiation, sickness and just plain being put down. Two different paths will cross. One looking to escape the Enclave and one that's looking to destroy it from the inside.
Xander a boy from the Enclave. Who will soon be uploaded into his new body and from what he seen. He will pretty much forget all that he knew and will be forced to be a puppet of the government. He is on the run from the Enclave and his only escape is to to get to the underground.
Rachel a girl from outside the Enclave. Who has fought and scrimped by on everything she's ever known. Also has two brothers that she looks out for even though the one is older than her. But when things go wrong in their Outsider town, things go drastically wrong. She is left alone on a trail with just a map and compass. How will she know where it takes her. What of they catch her?
Uploaded was definitely a different dystopian fiction book. It's not like any that I've read before and I thought it was absolutely fantastic and thrilling. It kept me on the edge of my seat and I didn't want to put it down. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
Xander lives in a world where people who are privileged can live forever, but at what cost. Xander doesn't want to be uploaded, though he is the presidents son and must go through the process for his 18th birthday. But perhaps he and his forbidden love can make a run for it and live a whole new life.
this was a very interesting read. It was addictive... interesting.. intriquing.. and keeps you on the edge of your seat curious to see whats next. i really enjoyed this and im glad i got to review it
Uploaded by James W. Hughes was an interesting and intriguing book to read. I enjoyed a lot of the story. There were things that I didn't like so much but it didn't ruin my overall enjoyment of the book. I liked the main characters enough. Though I liked Rachel a lot more than I liked Xander. I felt she was tough and wasn't willing to back down. I liked that she was willing to do anything to save her brother. I liked that Xander questioned everything and wasn't going to just "fall into place" the way he was expected to. I love this genre and found this one to be refreshing especially since the main characters were not in a love triangle that so many of them often have. I would recommend it those who enjoy this genre. I must warn you though...it ends on a cliffhanger.
