Werewolf High #4

The Soul Bond

Rate this book
A new threat. An unexpected ally. And a spark of unwanted power.

Sophomore year isn’t shaping up to be the cake walk that Lucy had hoped. Everyone still hates her. She can’t forgive Sam for his secrets. Her father is back and she can’t forgive him either. There’s been no sign of Hannah, and Lucy can’t help but resent her new roommate because of it.

And Tennyson Wilde is everywhere. In the dining room. In her dorm. In class. Even inside her head. She thinks it’s just a residual effect of being in his body, the fact that she can hear his thoughts, feel his feelings. But the more it happens, the worse it becomes and it seems to be awakening something inside her.

Lucy never wanted powers. She never wanted to be anything but a normal girl, but the longer she stays at Amaris, the more impossible that seems.

The Soul Bond is the fourth book in the YA paranormal romance series, Werewolf High. If you like fast-paced action, friendship and kick-ass female characters, then don’t miss The Soul Bond.

It’s my last review of 2016, so I decided to return to the YA fiction equivalent of comfort food. Something familiar that would tie me over until the new year. I’ve already read the first three books in Anita Oh’s Werewolf High series, and since the fourth one just came out, it made for a pretty simple reading choice.

I enjoyed the first three books—which all took place during narrator Lucy O’Connor’s freshman year at secluded, exclusive, possibly magical Amaris High—to varying degrees. I felt The Truth Spell had the overall best concept, and The Tiny Curse had the overall best execution, but The Body Swap was missing some of these elements. However, the strengths of the series lie in Lucy’s wonderfully snarky narration and the growing character development between her and the werewolves of Golden House, particularly Tennyson Wilde (with whom she had swapped bodies in book 3).

This new installment takes place at the start of sophomore year, so I was wondering if the academic promotion would naturally lead to the characters maturing a little bit. Not only was I pleased that this was the case, but I also feel there was overall growth in the plotting and execution of the story itself.

While I try to keep my reviews spoiler-free, that’s hard to do when reviewing later books in a series. I kinda have to reveal some things from the first three books. You’ve been warned.

Book four starts with Lucy trying to control the chaos of her younger brothers. She has decided not to return to Amaris High, and after all that has happened to her—being bullied, shrunk, and bodyswapped to name a few—you can’t really blame her. But Tennyson and the others show up and convince her to come back. After all, there are mysteries to solve: her father is back and kinda sketchy, her former roommate slash frenemy Hannah has been abducted, and there are mysterious beings called the Others who may be pulling the strings of the series’ deepest mystery.

Like expected, strange things start happening to Lucy. She gets bruises when Tennyson hurts himself, and the two of them develop a kind of telepathic link. Whether it’s a residual effect of their swap in the previous book or a new spell or curse isn’t so much important as what it does for their relationship. And even more so what it does for their individual relationships with Sam, Lucy’s childhood neighbor and best friend. I’m going to avoid saying that it creates a love triangle between them because that trope is used too often in YA fiction, but where Oh develops it is quite believable given the supernatural elements at play in the book.

What makes this book more complex than the previous three is that this soul bond isn’t the only weird thing Lucy has to deal with. Occasionally, her eyes glow brightly, and she feels pressure inside her like she’s going to explode. Whether caused by the bond to a werewolf or something else, the phenomenon is identified as the Becoming. Lucy is headed toward some kind of transformation, but what is she becoming? And what does her father know about it?

There are real, palpable stakes being raised in this book, and it was gripping to watch the characters deal with these concurrent—possibly connected—problems. Information was revealed at just the right pace with some true surprises and several laugh-out-loud moments. Regardless of what Lucy could become, it’s clear at the end of the book that she has changed. She’s stronger. There are mysteries to solve and a friend to find, and she’s more willing and ready to face the challenges ahead. That shows overall growth of character and in this series.

My only quibble is with the climactic chapters of the story. It’s not about the content, as I really felt the desperation and tension in those scenes. It’s about their location within the story—a little earlier than I expected based on the percentage given on my Kindle—and even though what followed was pertinent to the plot, I felt there was just a little too much denouement afterwards. After all, there’s another book—The Love Potion—coming soon.

But that’s a very minor complaint. The characters have been good souls all along, but here the plot threads really bond together well. I think this is the best book in the series so far, and I give The Soul Bond FOUR AND A HALF STARS.

This is the most intense book in this series so far. Although I jumped with glee to see Lucy and Tennyson bonded, there was this wariness with it. Shouldn't they have fallen in love first? Will they always feel forced? But this is just the way things seem to happen for Lucy – been thrown into it and swim... and luckily she is good at swimming! And maybe there is hope for love after all....

In accord with the seriousness of the growing bond and power within Lucy, the banter and the comments that made me laugh out loud in the former books have gone a bit – well, just a bit, hooray for Nikolai!
But I really love where the overall story is heading. At the beginning of the series, it felt a bit like there is just some crazy magic happening but now we can see there is a bigger (evil) master plan.

Still love Lucy’s snarky and amusing narration. Liked how supportive Tennyson was of Lucy with her newly developing powers and how the bond has given them a greater understanding of one another so they have genuine friendship now. Hopefully they are heading towards something more. Especially as any relationship between Lucy & Sam is all tell no show. Lucy keeps telling us how much she loves Sam and how she is interested in him but I just don’t buy it. I could see it in the first book when we got a glimpse into their past and how close they used to be but since then nearly all of Lucy’s interactions are with Tennyson and their relationship is the one that has grown the most.

i really like these books! even though there are three books in each year, each book is actually a story in itself. the main characters are well developed and very different from each other. the main character is hilariously sarcastic and has a great sense of self. she finds humor in her worst situations and always finds a reason to keep going. a great example for teens.
really enjoyable series!

some swearing but her most used derogatory word is jerk often with some great adjective added to it.

Another great story in this series. I'm well past high school, but I still enjoyed this entertaining read. The interactions between Lucy and Tennyson have been interesting from the start, but they move up a notch with a soul bond that neither are prepared for. The dialogue is witty and as new clues are uncovered in each book, the suspense builds. I would recommend reading this series from the beginning to get the full story.

I really enjoyed reading this book. This series is quickly becoming another of my favorite YA school based fantasy set. In this book, Lucy ends up with a mysterious bond to one of the last people she would have expected to have to keep constant tabs on. I highly recommend this series to anyone that a fan of the Hogwarts or Vampire Academy books, especially those that love reading about werewolves.

Ok, I really enjoyed this book and that's not something I'd thought I'd be saying at the start of this series. The writing is growing as the characters do and even though I still think the author does have a tendency to be a bit too vague at times when talking about the magical side of things, I still finished this book wearing a smile.

I have been given this book free in exchange of an honest review.

Book 4 keeps you guessing throughout. I love a book that can keep me wondering what will happen next, and this one does just that. It was a quick read and as soon as I finished I wanted to get the next one in the series right away to see what will happen next.

Good

When Lucy decides not to return to school the pack comes for her and convinced her to return. Something strange is happening Lucy and Tennyson have a bond and wanna end it . plus they learn about the becoming that Lucy is is having. With a betrayal from her dad once again maybe being bonded to Tennyson isn't bad idea or maybe it is . Good book

Twists and turns, lead Lucy and Tennyson down the same path. Completing a ritual and finding out about Sam’s Mom, after meeting to get information from her father. Now bonded forever, what will happen next.

What!

Can a plot get more twisted than this?! Yeah, sure, each book resolves an issue but creates two more in its stead. I get sucked deeper into the abyss. A couple swear words, but clean. ...so... where is the next one?

The plot thickens in this latest installment and once again I was drawn into the story easily. Lucy was right in not wanting to trust her father. My gosh, I was sitting on the edge of my seat! Loved that little dark moment in the book!

I also love the bond between Tennyson and Lucy. The relationship between the two is finally growing and I’m excited to see if it’ll continue to grow in the next books! Throughout this series there hasn’t been much romance for Lucy, there’s been moments where her stomach would flutter around one guy but throughout they’ve just been friends. And I’m not surprised that she eventually started having feelings for Tennyson, the boy who hasn’t been the nicest to her because from the very beginning he’s always thought she was doing all this to herself.

Overall, another fun book in the series! I’ve been easily drawn into them and I’m dying to know what happens next now that things are finally moving forward when it comes to Lucy and why she’s so special.

Blown away

This was the best book out of the series yet, in my opinion. The ending was to die for. I felt like the characters evolved more this time. I'm glad there was more focus on the two main characters BC that's more of what I was hoping to see. Nothing at all was overdone. I can't complain about anything really. I enjoyed reading straight through until 4 a.m. and it was so worth. I hope Anita Oh continues this series and makes at least an eight book set.

Well and truly hooked

The plot gets more interesting, the characters more delineated and I am enjoying the story. Looking forward to the next even while I don't want the story to end.
