Sir Michael Andrew Morpurgo, OBE, FRSL is the author of many books for children, five of which have been made into films. He also writes his own screenplays and libretti for opera. Born in St Albans, Hertfordshire, in 1943, he was evacuated to Cumberland during the last years of the Second World War, then returned to London, moving later to Essex. After a brief and unsuccessful spell in the army, he took up teaching and started to write. He left teaching after ten years in order to set up 'Farms for City Children' with his wife. They have three farms in Devon, Wales and Gloucestershire, open to inner city school children who come to stay and work with the animals. In 1999 this work was publicly recognised when he and his wife were invested a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to youth. In 2003, he was advanced to an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) in 2004. He was knighted in the 2018 for his services to literature and charity. He is also a father and grandfather, so children have always played a large part in his life. Every year he and his family spend time in the Scilly Isles, the setting for three of his books.

From the first paragraph, I knew this book was going to be amazing. It’s got that perfect sort of writing that immediately draws you into both the setting of the storyworld and the mind of the main character. But... it more than draws you; it’s almost as though you fall gently into it, like you open the book, blink your eyes, and suddenly you’re there, slipped seamlessly into the story before even finishing the first page.

The really interesting thing about it though was that, for writing so thoroughly excellent, it broke two foundational writing rules: telling vs. showing and info-dumping in the dialogue. Yet it’s written in this clever style that allows it to get away with those technical faux-pas specifically because they keep it from sounding written. It sounds told, like you’re that little boy opposite an utter stranger, sitting in the dark of a still train as this master storyteller unfolds a striking narrative to chase the dark away. And when he strikes that single match and looks deep into the little boy’s eyes, it’s your eyes he’s looking into, as that miniature flame burns between you and the words connect somewhere deep inside your chest.

Quick disclaimer though: it is a war story and because of that I’d be careful about recommending it to anyone. However, it isn’t told in a gory or graphic way, so if you think you can handle that kind of imagery being alluded to (though never completely spelled out), I would highly recommend you give it a go.

This is a based on a true story, historical fiction book for middlegrades and up. Barney and his mother are traveling on a train when it needs to hide in a tunnel to avoid bombing by the German planes overhead. With them in their car is a stranger who proceeds to tell them an amazing story about Private Billy Byron. This character is based upon a real soldier from WWI by the name of Private Henry Tandy. The story he tells is of his friend Billy and all the wonderous and amazing things he did in the war that earned him several medals. He also told of the German soldier "Fritz" as they were all called, that he let go at the end of the war. He did not want to kill one more person. Would his decision come back to haunt him?

This was a relatively quick read and one that I didn't want to put down once I got past the first chapter. The character of Billy was so well written, it was as if you knew him. This is a great story to read with children ages 10 and up. The discussions you could have, the predicting and alternate endings if things had been different are sure to elicit fantastic conversations and ideas. A must read for history students learning about the World Wars. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

Read this ahead of one of my kids so we could discuss. I've heard a lot of good things about Michael Morpurgo and this book didn't disappointment. A nice mix of history and fiction that would be easily absorbed by a younger reader. This story has a nice element of making a moral decision with dire consequences - it would make a good discussion point the classroom.

Short and sweet - classic Morpurgo territory and classic Morpurgo. This is a really good story and a great re-imagining. A quick read and well worth looking out for.

An Eagle in the Snow is a historically based work of fiction about the life of a highly decorated World War I British soldier and his unbelievable opportunity to have changed the course of history. Private Billy Byron, who is based on the real life of Henry Tandey, is an orphan who grows up and goes off to fight in Europe during World War I. During his service he is injured three times, yet continues to head back to the front lines, and by the end of the war is one of the most decorated British soldiers in history. In his final battle with the Germans, he makes the decision to spare the life of a German soldier who ultimately turns out to be a young Adolf Hitler. The Afterword of the book contains the true historical information so the reader can see where the author inserted unknown details and where he used what was factual. A fascinating read for young readers and adults to think about how history might have been changed if Henry Tandey had made a different choice.

My daughter checked this out from her school library and being a 4th grader, I thought this was way beyond her level. She wanted to read it together, which I'm so happy she still wants her old mom to read with her. This book was an amazing journey about WWI and WWII and about chances missed. The more years that pass from these wars the more the new generations miss the true understanding of human suffrage and sacrifices. This book help generate wonderful conversations with my daughter and allowed me to share family history of those who served or were effected by the wars.

Cum am reactiona fiecare dintre noi, daca ar sta in puterea noastra de decizie sa alegem cui ii crutam viata?

I decided to read the book my nine-year-old was reading so we could discuss it together. It's loosely based on the life of Henry Tandey, a British soldier who may or may not have spared Hitler's life near the end of World War I. For my son, this was his first war fiction and he seemed to enjoy the genre. For me, it was fascinating to learn the story of Henry Tandey.

This was a very quick and accessible read. The story-within-a-story format added to the engagement, and I was fascinated with the events, as they are based on a true story or at least a legend believed to be true enough by many. And then, the ending...I've been thinking about it for an hour or so...and I just don't like it at all. Maybe others will. No spoilers from me.

Wow! What a thought provoking book. This would make an excellent book discussion book for teens. This is one of those books that can be read on so many levels that any reader (whether middle school child, teen or adult) would get something from reading it.

If you could prevent a world war by killing one man, would you do it?

✏️ Review ✏️

An Eagle in the Snow is a quick WWII read that has a very thought-provoking storyline. I enjoyed this book's narrative and read it in only a few hours. The plot or subject matter isn't very weighty at all, yet the book poses such an intriguing and challenging question that the reader and characters are forced to answer.

One thing I didn't like, however, is the epilogue's inference that the narrator of the book is... well, I don't want to spoil anything, but it is kinda weird; so be aware of this inference. But otherwise An Eagle in the Snow makes for an interesting and really quick historical read.

• The epilogue's inference about the narrator.

Henry Tandey is a hero and I wish he will be remembered for all his heroism and all the good things he did and not as "the man who didn't shoot Hitler." Sure, if he would've killed him in the first world war, maybe there wouldn't have been a second war, maybe there wouldn't have been so many death, misery, suffering, pain, grief and horror.. (that is, if it the soldier he spared really was Hitler, which no one can know with certainty now)

But even if he was& he would have killed him.. you never know.. maybe there would've been some other maniac.. it wasn't Hitler alone.. there are so many other cruel people.. hitler had high ranked people supporting him.. so what if one of them just would've become a "hitler"? What if there still had been war?? We don't know. And we never will..

But what Henry Tandey did was 'the right thing' to do! back then! (not to shoot a wounded soldier who allegedly wasn't a threat to them..) it was. BUT THEN IT turned out that it would've been THE BETTER THINGIF HE WOULD HAVE DONE 'THE WRONG THING' and shoot him.. but how the fuck was he supposed to know the future??? No one could've know.. hitler was just some bleeding young German no one would've given a second glance..(he was 25 and Henry only saw him for a few moment's and it wasn't a war situation and there already has been so much killing.. so he thought it is the right thing.. and others did so too)

Henry Tandey said in some press interview: "I didn't like to shoot a wounded man, but if I'd known who this corporal would turn out to be, I'd give ten years now to have five minutes' clairvoyance then."
Like.. this is so unfair.. I'm so sad.. 😭😭😭
And it could've also been that one of the other soldiers he saved was one who smuggled Jewish ppl out of Germany during the war and or was in a resistant group and fought against Hitler.. and that would've also been thanks to him.. oh man.. we will never really know how or what happened and how exactly it influenced the course of history.. but I feel sorry for him to only be remembered as the one who didn't shoot Hitler..

So to this book: I cried. I literally cried.. and more than once. It's just so so unfair and sad and there's all this cruelty.. and unnecessary violence and death.. but you are helpless and you can do nothing about it.. it is what it is and you can't change the course of history.. it's devastating..

So, to finish this long text, a very very good, sad, touching and true quote from the book:

"But that would have been the best ending, son, wouldn't it? The happy-ever-after ending. Peace in our time. No more war. That was the ending Billy(that is the name of the character based on Henry tandey) wanted, the ending we all wanted. I wish I could make it a happy ending for you. But one way or another, things didn't quite work out like that, as you know. They often don't."

Although it runs for well over 200 pages, this is a short novel and can be read quickly because of the font size and line spacing - it appears to have been aimed at children who would be reluctant to read. The plot is excellent. Based on a true story, it is set at the time of the Coventry blitz during the Second World War, but the real focus takes place in the First World War, when an act of mercy turns out to have unforeseen and disastrous consequences. Morpurgo's narrative structure is simply brilliant as he builds and maintains tension and suspense. I am very impressed.

One man,one bullet, one hope.

This book was the best book I have ever read! In a pitch black tunnel under attack from Nazi planes,
Barney hears the moving and exciting story of Billy Byron who was a true hero of World War 1. It was a very adventurous but sad tale about how he could have saved the world from World War 2. I really enjoyed the book because it was very moving and full of suspense.

I would recommend the book to boys ages 10-14.

I think this book is magnificent! The ending of this book immediately shot countless of questions into my brain! I read this book within 2 days of me holding it. A cunning twist was given at the ending of the book, and I constantly keep on recalling my imaginary image of the mysterious man. Who was telling them the story, whilst they were stuck on the train?
