A Tuesday Table Ladies' Mystery #1

Where's Laura: A Tuesday Table Ladies Mystery

Rate this book
How far should friends go when one of the group vanishes?

Everyone who frequented the Oakwood retirement community’s dining room knew that Tuesday evenings meant the six ladies who always sat at their special table would liven things up with their laughter and conversation. They called them the Tuesday Table Ladies but on one particular Tuesday, something seemed very wrong. One of the six was missing and the five at dinner that evening appeared unusually subdued.

“Where’s Laura?” begins when Laura Lambert is missing from her regular weekly dinner engagement, causing her five anxious friends to fear the worst. Set in an historic neighborhood near the Chesapeake Bay, the situation grows from a hesitant check of Laura’s apartment to a complex and menacing mystery as Robert Symonds, a former foreign service officer, is drawn in to assist the Tuesday Table Ladies.

Octavia Long is the pseudonym for eight women who dine together every Tuesday at Longwood at Oakmont, a community of retirees in western Pennsylvania.

One evening, one of them failed to appear for dinner. “Where’s Muriel? Could something have happened to her?” After a search, she was found. That was the inspiration for the idea of a mystery entitled Where’s Laura? written by the Tuesday Table Ladies.

A bit too low key for me

It should have been a great plot but in reality turned up to be very low key and frankly slow. It was however written beautifully but I can't say that I particularly liked any of the characters.
The ladies have been meeting every Tuesday for ages. However this particular Tuesday finds their newest recruit to the Tuesday Ladies Club failing to turn up. Numerous phone calls go unanswered and getting worried two decide to investigate her apartment. All they find is a note to change her housekeeper and a voicemail left by an Italian male. Still missing on Wednesday they recruit a former government man to help them. Throw in family heirlooms, car racing and an art trafficking ring plus the death of the Italian male. Does this have anything to do with her first marriage in Italy?

Every Tuesday 6 women at a retirement center near Washington DC, meet each other for dinner. Then one Thursday Laura doesn't show up. A quick check of her room to see if she's been injured turns up an urgent message from an unknown man with an Italian accent and a letter to the retirement village's management asking them to switch her to a new maid. Her friends are very worried, and start to try to find her.

The characters in this book could use a bit more development because I think more personality would make the reader more invested in the reading. Also there weren't a lot of clues along the way that would allow the reader to try to solve the mystery along with Laura's friends. That said this book was far more coherent than I expected a book written by 8 individuals to be, and I would be interested in reading further in the series to see how the characters develop.

Definitely a cozy cozy set in a retirement community and actually c0-written by a group of 8 female residents of such a community. Found it curious that there would be one main male character and -- and a quite handsome one at that -- that would provide a focus and many of the questions that move the plot forward.

I want to retire here, if only for the dinner selections! Pretty simple story line, a little sappy, some definite stereotypes of the older generation. Decent flow, considering it was a collaboration of 8 writers.

A great story of friendship relationships with a little twist

this is an easy read well written and easy to follow with great character development. The plot has a bit of a twist and all in all was a very enjoyable read

Story does reveal a real mystery that they solve.

Easy read

I heard of this book from a friend where I work. Two of the authors have a connection to the university of Pittsburgh. One got her degree from the School of Education and the other was a faculty member there. It's a mystery story and moves along at a good clip. The unbelievable part of the book is that it was written by eight women who are living in a retirement village in Pittsburgh and it is written with one voice--wonderful feat!!
