Cain Casey #6

The Devil's Due

Rate this book
In the sixth book of the Devil Series, Cain and Emma are now married and have returned to a Katrina-ravaged New Orleans to await the birth of their third child. Cain’s wedding gift to Emma was peace of mind with the death of Juan Luis and his mother, but Anthony Curtis is still a threat who has disappeared as effectively as the Luis family once did. The Casey alliance with the Jatibon and Carlotti families is strong, but there are new and old enemies, as well as the ever-present FBI that are working to bring Cain down.

All this weighs on Cain as she tries to come to terms with the addition to her family she never thought was possible. A daughter her father never knew about means a sister Cain now knows exists, and must now come to terms with.

I'm a big fan of Vali, and was happy to get my hands on this book. I love her Cain series, and this book didn't disappoint.

I do want to make very clear, if you have not read the other Cain books, stop and read them before this book. This is not a stand alone. There is many characters, with many side stories going on. Even having read the first five books, it took me a little while to remember who everyone was. Thanks to Jade's review, I quickly read the short, Hell Fire, that is in the book Girls With Guns. It brings two new characters into the Cain universe. This Cain book does repeat part of that novella, but through Cains eyes. You can read this book without reading Hell Fire, but it will give you a better incite into Finley and Abigail, the two new likeable characters. I think Finley will be a good edition to the Cain books. Lastly, I would consider reading Calling the Dead, after you finish this book. Even though that book was written in 2008, the timeline fits in with this book. It's a great look at the character of Sept. Vali teases the big case she is working on in this book. Calling the Dead, is about that case, and quite a good book.

When it comes to the book, I really enjoyed it. It is a classic Cain book and I was happy to have a lot of loose ends finally tied up. I really don't want to talk about the plot, since it would be too easy to spoil it. I will say Cain and Emma have to deal with a foe they didn't really see coming. Plus we finally get to find out about the new Cain baby. There is lots of bad guys like always, and a web Cain must find her way out of.

I would suggest to anyone who has not read any Cain books, do yourself a favor and grab book one. They are all well written, and different than any lesfic books out there. If you are a fan of the Cain series, grab this without hesitation. I hope Vail will keep writing this series, because I will keep reading.

An ARC was given to me from Bold Strokes Books, for a honest review.

Ack. I forgot to write a review and now . . . hmms.

1) There is a short story in Girls With Guns that I strongly encourage people to read before reading this book here. A few new to the series characters make their first appearance in that short story and they have a somewhat significant impact on the story-line in this book here.

2) I rather liked this specific book, hence the 4.5 rating. Though it is hard to discuss (beyond the note in 1, and noting rating) as this is a book late in a series in which each book before it matters to the one that comes after it (or, in other words, I kept 'spoiling' myself just from looking at the book
descriptions). So what can I really put here?

3) I like the characters that appeared in this book. Solid characterizations.

4) Strong solid plot.

5) There are, as may or may not be expected - since this is more of a slice of life type book about a criminal than a mystery, romance, or anything else - so there are things that occurred before this book that are of importance, and things that are of importance that are still 'dangling' at the end of this book (hence that 'slice of life' tag - it's a look in on a character as they go about their life - not a recap of their entire life).

6) Odd how basically everyone whose sexual preference is made known is a lesbian except for, maybe, two women in New Orleans.

7) I didn't particularly care about some of the subplots - like the one involving Marisol (or however Hector's daughter's name is spelled) and the one involving Nicolette (again, however that is spelled); or, for that matter, the one involving Stacey .. . um . . something or other - Hector's mistress (and even though that's a MF relationship, there was one specific scene when Stacey thought to herself about a lost opportunity that involved another woman - am I reading into that? Any other book I'd say yes. Here where 99.9% of New Orleans is a lesbian? No, probably not reading more into that thought than I should).

Rating: 4.5

Oh my goodness. It's just as exciting as the first time I read it.
Finley adds to the Casey family dynamic with Abigail and her kids. It's great seeing 'cousins' for the Casey kids.

Cain Casey loves her family and friends and is constantly defending them. The surprise plot twist is still a big part of the storyline in this book as well. I’ll keep reading to see if it gets resolved by the end of book 8.

This is the 6th book in this series. So I'm going to write about my opinion on the whole series.

I hated the first book. Its been some time I read that book. I think my main problem about that book was reading flashbacks and also the MCs not being together. I read the 2nd book afterward but wasn't impressed with that either. Recently I picked it up again and now finished all books in this series. And surprisingly they are now my favourites.
I have big crush on Cain Casey. Gotta love a girl with a gun 😉. And other MC Emma was kind of pain in the a$$ in first book but then she become very interesting in next books. She went from "If you kill him I'll leave you Cain" To "You are very romantic when you kill people,Cain". That was an amazing character development.
So,, there are lots of violence and read this books only if you can deal with them. And I don't know if there is another book coming soon. I really wanna read more of Cain and Emma.

After reading book 5 and all of the related books I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next with the Casey's. I loved reading what's happening with some of my favorite characters in the series.

Although I didn't enjoy some of the side plots or side characters. The book was enjoyable over all and kept my interest. I'm looking forward to seeing what the Casey's are up to next. Hopefully more about when Cain first took over the family's business.

I am a huge fan of the Cain Casey series so when I saw that another book was being published I set a reminder on my calendar because I wanted to buy it as soon as it was published.

I started reading this book on the day I received it an I really thought that I would be finished by the end of the day by t that didn't happen. I'm sad to say that this wasn't one of my favourite books in the series and the main reason for this is that I didn't feel like this was a progression in the series but more of a side story in which Cain tied off some lose ends.

When we left of in the last book of the series things were heating up and the scene was set for a massive explosion of action but then I got this book and Cain was dealing with other people's issues and we heard nothing about the storm brewing regarding agent Curtis.

My one other problem with the way this story was told is that the storyline became too complicated and that is the main reason that I took so long to read the book. There are a few new characters that have been added to the Casey storyline and I loved them because I new their story from Girls with Guns but the competing narratives made for a rather arduous read.

This book wasn't all bad, in fact it wasn't bad at all, it just didn't meet the exceptionally high standards that the other books set.

What I did enjoy was the addition of Emma and Cains new baby to the Casey clan and the ending left me waiting for more especially now that a of the inconsequential people have been taken care of.

This book still offers Cain Casey's special dose of malice and action and after reading it you won't love it any less even if there is space for it to be loved more. 4.3 stars.

I freaking loved this book!

Incompetent leadership, unreliable leaders, organized crime, violent, betrayal but nothing can prevent Cain to expand her empire. A vivid outstanding suspenseful and emotional story of the Casey family, about the rise and fall of her competitors and everything that happened around her. I really enjoyed the contrast between Cain's good and bad side. I admire her undying love and loyalty for her family. Her lifestyle is questionable but her protectiveness is heartwarming. She is my hero. And Emma, as always, is a sweet, beautiful woman with a heart of gold and perfect for Cain. She is her rock. As expected and hoped for, it is action packed and it never does slow down. I was constantly sitting on the edge of my seat. This is the sixth masterpiece in this series and I hate it that I now have to wait for the next part.

This is the sixth book of the Devil Series, following the ongoing mafioso saga of Cain and Emma’s family and business life in the now Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. The threat of Juan Luis and his mother are gone but rogue FBI agent Anthony Curtis has disappeared. While trying to juggle friends, allies and family, a new baby on the way, new threats, and old family secrets, Cain must be all things to all men: wife, mother, leader, schemer and ruthless killer, loyal friend and honourable adversary.

This is an enthralling, nail biting and ultra fast moving addition to the Devil series. Casey now has so many irons in the fire it’s a case of smack one down and another pops up. The Casey alliance with the Jatibon and Carlotti families is strong but old and new enemies appear at every turn. Bizarrely some of her closest allies are cops and FBI agents who should be trying to take her down, but with whom she has a bond built over time. Detective Sept Savoie makes an appearance so check out “Calling The Dead” for her and Keegan's story line.

Minor characters take centre stage while others take a backseat. In this episode the FBI takes a lesser role while rogue cops and angry in-laws take the lead in the non mafia life, and old enemies regroup in the underworld. Talking of minor previously minor characters, add “Girls With Guns” to the series if you want Finley and Abigail's back story

Devil's Due is so fast paced you seriously have to concentrate, but once again Ali Vali has produced a brilliant story arc, sold character development, incomparable bad-ass women in traditionally male roles, leading both the goodies, baddies and cross-breeds. This episode closes off some of the loose ends, but sets us up for even more drama in the stories to come.

This is a stand-alone, but I would seriously recommend starting this series at the beginning. The overarching story arc is so good, the interrelationships so complex, that while it might make a good read, you will simply be missing too much backhistory and nuance of personal interplay to get the most from it.

Roll on the next in the series.. I mean really. Why can't people write faster???

An honest review thanks to NetGalley. Finally, four years later we get to book six in the Casey saga. Please do not pick up this book until you have read the first five Cain Casey books; there are so many different characters and their stories that you will get lost once you start reading this. As always with Vali this did not disappoint, we were thrown right back into the lives of the Casey Clan through love, family and the responsibility of leading a crime family. If you loved this first five, this is the book for you. I was disappointed we didn't hear more about Lucy and her family; it ended right when her mother planted a bug. Hopefully, we will learn more about that in the next book.

Wow

This is one of the best series I've had the pleasure in reading.
Each book just gets better. But, and yes its a big but... there are so many lose ends. So, hopefully there's another book coming.
Which I'm pleased about. It's not often I say I don't want it to end.

Once you've read the series, you will also want to see what happens to Anthony and Nicola.
The books aren't fast paced but they are full of action.
They are easy to read because you seriously can't put the books down. You really want to know what happens next.
The characters are great. Each offering their own contributions to the stories.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants some action in their read but also some good old fashioned gangsters.
Enjoy

I love me some Cain Casey

All I have to say is if you haven't read this series you are missing out. The characters in this book seem so real and others to many to name. The storylines seem like they could go on for ever. I love how there is always more then one problem going on. But leave it to Cain to solve all the problems and get home in time to change the babies diaper and put him to bed. I definitely recommend this book.

There are some shockers here and I am not sure of how I feel with a soft Casey. Nevertheless, this is another book in the series making the stars and like previous books, this gets thumbs up not only because it fulfills the thrill, suspense, romance, bad guy-good guy factors but because it brings a lot of sentimentality that though i am unsure of how to accept (considering Casey's bio), underscores what humanness is all about.

The Devil's Due delivers! A terrific read!

The book continues the story of Cain & her family and it's beautifully written. Just as important the author takes the time to develop Muriel's new romantic story (wish their was more romance for her in this book) and also Kristen's character. This is important because at the start of the series the author spent time on a book on Dallas/Remington and on the Shelby/Muriel plot line and spent a good amount of time on developing Kristen's overall character too . I think the reader's deserve to have time spent watching Muriel find love as well Kristen's importance going forward in the series.

In the last book it lacked a lot of movement forward for any of the character's above. That made me wary to read this book. I loved the writer's focus on a few characters and developing them more in depth in the original 3 books.

The Devil's Due starts to go back to the writers concentrating and balancing the development of the subplot characters and it's nice to see. The one tricky aspect of writing a crime story is introducing too many characters/issues & the tight rope act of keeping tension. I personally love the romantic story lines and would like to see a little more given at least to Muriel & Kristen.

One other plot is that the book starts to intertwine the lives of her other books and short stories. I won't spoil it, but it's actually nice to see the interaction between the characters and the caring that goes on despite being on different sides of the law. It also is great to see another Casey come back into the fold & the ending of the book leaves a great twist for the next book. *Which I hope is coming at the "End" of 2017 ***Hint! Hint! to the writer!

I also liked the inclusion of Fiona's shift into being more open minded. Fiona being so one dimensional angry at Cain was just too flat. It will make the reader open to buy into what's coming for Fiona as she learns the truth about her linage and starts to deal with the changes that come with that knowledge.

I look forward to the next book. If you are a reader of the series, you will find The Devil's Due starts to go back to the original writing where the author starts to spend time developing characters we care about. It's a great book!

This series has me hooked because of the "bad guys" and "good guys" as well as law enforcement. Is it possible to switch sides? Are there benefits to switching sides? Who gains? Who loses? As the series continues, I am enjoying the development of various characters. Specifically, Abigail, Fiona, Kristen, Finley, and Muriel. Carol, Emma's mother is too scary for prime time, especially when she describes weakness and what is takes to strengthen. It is difficult not to like Emma's father, Ross. Dallas and Remi getting closer and preparing to take the next step, is sexy and super cool to watch. The relationship and now marriage of Emma and Cain is like a waterfall, beautiful and breathtaking, yet fierce and powerful. Cain, hoping for peace and calm, all I can say is, she knows how to make peace and create calm. Bang!! Bang!!

Again with not having any words. I love the addition of a Finley and Abigail to the family, the fact that Fiona is less of a bitch in this one than she was in the last. She’s growing on me. So is Shelby. I used to like her, then disliked her a lot, but now she’s growing on me again. Muriel and Kristen! Finally! I’m so glad to see Muriel happier and Kristen less lonely. And damn, Kristen sure is bold. Dallas and Remi are adorable... and do I really need to start yelling about Billy’s name and him having green eyes? God I’m in love with them. And with every book I’ve read, the more I got into it, the more I kept thinking that these characters are like a family to me. They’re mine, but only for a time.

This one was kinda slow, but the end did pick up though. I really believe the books are divided now. The first 2 or 3 books had 50+ chapters and it was fucking fabulous but these ones with less than 30 seem to be splits of 1 major book.

I kinda hate it.

What a fantastic book! From the very beginning, I was captured by this story. I have read all the books in this series and wish for more the moment I come to the end of one. In this book, the reader will find adventure, suspense, happiness, and romance.

Ms. Vali has created such a complex storyline about the Casey clan. She teaches you about the Casey’s illegal business ventures and how their competitors try to crush the family. As a reader, you form such a connection to Cain Casey that you are constantly cheering for the “mobster”. The word “mobster” is the term of endearment that Emma Casey frequently uses when talking with her wife.

This book is the sixth in the series. Although a reader can pick up this book and read it as a standalone, I would not recommend it. There is so much history of the Casey family that is integral to the story.

All the characters, whether they are the primary or secondary, are well developed. Over the years of reading this series, I have felt as though I know them. For example, when something happens to Cain or Emma Casey, you feel their emotions. For example, Emma gives birth, you can feel the joy that the Casey family feel. When a member of the Casey family is killed, or injured, you cry for the pain they are experiencing.

I highly recommend this book and give it 5+ out of 5 stars.

Welcome back to a world of love, crime and the all-capable Cain Casey.
Or, the one where every female is gay.

So it's been two years since the last book, and maybe like me the thought of re-reading the previous Cain Casey books to refresh your memory got you like:
ain't nobody got time photo: Aint nobody got time for that. Aintnobodygotnotimeforthat.gif

But don't worry. Lengthy exposition is here to fix all your memory holes.

Here's what struck me about the book:

1. Cain is not here to play.
That's right, she owned her dark side. No more kid gloves. I was seriously surprised by how much of a crime boss Cain was in this book. Yes. Can we keep this going?

2.A lot happens in this book.
No, seriously, a lot. Too much. As in, how many plots can there be against one woman? If someone could provide a diagram showing the intersecting villain plots I would like that very much thank you. Ali was doing the most, because I can say not a single one of the 'villain' plotlines and arcs that were started/relayed in this book reached a satisfactory end or even developed much beyond what they were at face value. Little nuance, which is odd for a series that takes the time to tell the story from multiple POVs.

3.Some World Building
Not much, but some. In this story Cain begins to look into expanding her territory, and that in itself was interesting to see.

4. Mixed Metaphors
This is not necessarily a complaint, but there are a lot of hilariously mixed metaphors coming from multiple characters. My particular favourite was

5. Action.
Obviously.

6. Family
One thing I really enjoy about Ali's books is the family, and how the children are more than props.

In Summary: This book is an enjoyable read, and has many of the elements I generally enjoyed from the previous books of the series. It does have heavy doses of things I did not like, but overall, it works. The main flaw is that this book does not land any one of the arcs it starts properly, and if this were a trilogy, I would say it suffers 'middle book syndrome'.

Petty rant : I would like to state for the record that I do not care enough about Remi and Dallas' love life to read a whole chapter about it. No, really. This applies to Muriel and the little one. Literally the only reason I cared about Muriel/Shelby was because I was worried Shelby would betray the family. Can they have their own little novellas that I get to ignore/enjoy? This would be much preferable to the multiple times an interesting plotline was halted for the secondary characters to have dates.

In this sixth book of the series, Cain and Emma welcome a new baby into their family and Cain is still plagued with multiple enemies, including Nunzio Luca, the spurned Nicolette, the ever-present FBI, and now, the Russian mafia looking to avenge the killing of one of its leaders. Plus Emma's mother, Carol, re-enters the picture hellbent on taking Hannah. This is what I look for in a Cain Casey book--a lot of action on multiple fronts, especially once the principal couples are happy and settled.

I can't go wrong with this series or the writer for that matter. It amazes me how this series and characters come together and the so strong willed Casey but when it comes to her Emma or her children don't mess with her because the Devil will be coming. I hope and pray there's more you'll be willing to share with us on the Cain Clan.

Love, love, love

My first book by Ali Vali was Second Season and I was hooked. Then it was onto this series and I love it and want more, which I hope is coming. I still have the prequal about Cain's father to read but then I know I'll be wanting for more. Read this series if you like mysteries, crime, adventure or all the above. You'll be addicted, just as I am.

More mutual enemies are eliminated

Emma finally has the new Casey heir, another cousin returns to the clan, and more in this book. The are a few new surprises for each crime family, but Anthony Curtis is still on the loose. I know this series won't last forever, but I think the next book is the last one. I've really enjoyed their story, and the characters I've grown to know.
