इस उपन्यास की पृष्ठभूमि अगस्त 1942 का ‘भारत छोड़ों’ आन्दोलन का विस्फोट है। परन्तु यह कहानी दो पीड़ियों से क्रान्ति की वेदना को अदम्य बनाते वैयक्तिक, पारिवारिक, सामाजिक और साम्रप्रदायिक विषमताओं का स्पष्टीकरण भी है। यशपाल की दृष्टि में क्रांति का अर्थ केवल शासकों के वर्ण-पोशाक का बदल जाना ही नहीं परन्तु जीवन में जीर्ण रूढ़ियों की सड़ांध से उत्पन्न व्याधियों और सभी प्रकार की असह्य बातों का विरोध भी हैं। यशपाल अपनी आरम्भिक रचनाओं से ही नारी विषमताओं के मुखरतम विरोधी और उसकी पूर्ण स्वतंत्रता के समर्थक रहे हैं। इस रचना में यह बात उन्होंने और सबल तथा निश्शंक स्वर में कही है। उपन्यास का कथा विस्तार राजनैतिक विस्फोट से ब्रिटिश शासन से मुक्त तक ही नहीं बल्कि देश को अवश रखने के लिए विदेशी नीति द्वारा बोये विष-बीजों के अविशिष्ट प्रभावों पर्यन्त भी है, जिनके बिना भारतीय नर- नारी की मुक्ति असम्भव है। अन्ततः वह कथा केवल क्रान्ति की मशीन नर- नारियों की नहीं बल्कि उन पात्रों की मानवीय समस्याओं, जीवन की नैसर्गिक उमंगों आवश्यकताओं और संस्कारों के द्वन्द्वों की भी है। पूरा उपन्यास आदि से अन्त तक रोचक है। आगामी पचासों वर्षों तक यह उपन्यास भारतीय कथाकारों के लिए मार्ग दर्शक रहेगा।

पहाड़ सी किताब. तिस पर लिखने का ढंग ऐसा जैसे समय. सब बहता जाता. आप पढ़ते जाते. किताब ऐसे खत्म जैसे पीढ़ियां गुज़रीं. जैसे एक और गुजर सकती पर लेखक रुक गया. जैसा नाम बिल्कुल वैसी किताब इसकी उसकी सबकी बात.

The novel is set against the backdrop of freedom struggle in India, the period from early 20s to end of WW2. It beautifully describes the aspiration and struggles of middle class and surprisingly with some strong woman characters in it. I am quite surprised to see the lives of the educated people which had higher intellectual standards.

I read the Malayalam translation of the novel which had a lot of translation and printing mistakes and printing quality by Kendra Sahitya Academy was horrible. Please try to publish them with the care they deserve.
