I found this short novella very hard to get on with; the lad narrating starts by telling us that before the Collapse and all the deaths, he was at boarding school.... and then we just get boring, awkward, stupid, teen guys at school. Sorry to say it, but I would have preferred not being told there was a dystopia on the way, in order that I would try to pay attention to the kids. I was awaiting some hints about what was to come. There weren't any. And I refused to read Lord of the Flies at school. I'm not going to read discussions about it in this story.
I am sure the author has a plan in mind and wanted to give the kids of his books some normality before the Collapse. The novella is nicely enough written. But I need to tell him that lads with a horror to relate don't ramble about anything else at all for many pages, as in the first two chapters included at the end. Lads rush to tell you the bad. They have to get it out. Then maybe they would go back and explain that life used to be different. If you have enjoyed the SF books (which I have not seen) or you just want to read a boarding school story, you might well like this book better than I did. I downloaded an ARC from Instafreebie. This is an unbiased review.
A stream of consciousness novella about the awkwardness of teenage boys at a private co-ed school dance. There is an underlying sense of menace. Prequel offered as a freebie in hopes of selling the rest of the series.
Title: Escape Author: R. J. Infantino Publisher: R. J. Infantino ISBN: N/A Buy Link: https://rjinfantino.com/2016/12/13/ge... Reviewer: Teresa Fallen Angel Blurb: The Ashwood Lies Prequel Before the collapse, Ashwood Prep seemed like any other boarding school. It’s not. Follow along with the Chase and the rest of the gang as they mess with the professors, get ready for a school dance, and notice the first hints of Ashwood’s dark secrets. I had a ton of fun writing this. Some of my favorite scenes to read and write are when the characters get to relax in the small moments and we get to learn who they are. That’s what I did with this novella.
Total Score: 5/5
Summary: This short story did an incredible job introducing the reader to many characters in this story, but most importantly it revealed that the school wasn't exactly what it appeared to be. Chase and his friends were typical young adults living in a boarding school that because of its location kept them isolated. While the rules appeared excessive for the older students, they weren't that unusual. The many unique characters brought humor to the story, but it is the hidden secrets that intrigue me. I will be waiting to find out what happens in Collapse the next book in The Ashwood Lies series.
