In a matter of hours, the boys of Ash's clan will face a coming of age ritual requiring they throw themselves into the Sacred Mountain. Most will emerge as warriors... but no one, not even Ash's own father, expects a weakling like him to survive the fire.
I grew up the daughter of a merchant mariner on the southern Atlantic seaboard, spent years as a Navy wife in the Pacific, and currently live in the rural high desert at the base of a snow-capped mountain surrounded by Joshua trees, dogs and one very demanding cat.
First off, I'd like to thank Tully for a copy of this story. I've been slacking but finally I'm here to write a review.
I really enjoyed how this story had turned out. Ash isn't like the other young men from his clan. He is an oddity, different from everyone else. Ash soon learns that all is what it seems to be. Secrets are revealed and truths come to be.
Elliot is another young man in this story that is treated/assumed to be a certain type, but there is more to him than meets the eye. I'm happy both of them ended up happy.
Rating: 4.5 Stars Genres: MM, Fantasy, Dark, Short Story Series: Not at this time but the potential is there. Trigger Warnings: So true, heed them. Recommended: Yes, absolutely.
Catch 22! So I picked this book because I was wanting something quick to read. However, it had me screaming "Why? Why? Why? Couldn't you have been longer?!", but then I probably wouldn't have read it...so catch 22. Anyhow, this story had mass potential to be a 500 plus page epic fantasy.
I knew not to expect everything because of the length, so I didn't get the full in depth experience of a novel. However, as far as the short story genre goes, this was pretty spot-on fantastic. Loved the glimpse into this world. Awesome descriptions & suspense.
This was a short quick read that was ok. That I found interesting it was a coming of age story Ash, misfit son of a clan warrior-chief. When he is 18 he must walk thru fire to become a man once in the cave he is almost raped by to other boys twins Juan and Ibarra. Turns out his father had another son who died in the fire that he didn't know about. This was too short and really didn't explain a lot. Eliot who he thought was simpleminded because he did what the other boys said and didn't speak was not so simple he knew the truth that Ash one with the fire and turned into a bird. This was my first time reading this author although I have several of her books on my tbr list.
3.5 stars only because it was so short. That was a very good short read. I really liked the world the loved in. And it shows what an act of kindness forges.
This was a quick read so there wasn't much time for in depth character or story development. Interesting story, wish it was longer to get some more in depth development.
This was very interesting, I have a good time reading it.
Ash was a nice character. I couldn’t help to feel sorry for the unfair way he was treated. He was a very likable character. I can’t say the same for any of the other characters, I couldn’t care for them, not even Eliot, but at least I didn’t hate him either.
The plot was very good. I kept reading without any clue of what could happen, It was great. The ending was also something that I l really liked. It was unexpected and even though I kind of hope a different course of action, I was very pleased with how everything worked out.
The only part I wasn’t too convinced about, was the relationship part. It just didn’t felt right. I would hope a better developing in the romance part, but I think it wasn’t the objective of the book. In general I really enjoy reading it. I would recommend to read the warnings before start reading. It was a very nice book.
