The continuing story of the people of Cheshire, New Hampshire, coping with grid failure, economic collapse and governmental chaos. Government agencies (FEMA, etc.) offer aid, but expect control in return. NH refuses to comply. The authorities block aid to NH to force compliance. The people of Cheshire try to secure alternate food sources, but run afoul of urban gangs in the process. Comments from some pre-release “You weave a great tale that most of us who don't have a large trust fund to draw from can relate to. Your story is one of my favorite types to read. Martin is an average guy with modest means to prepare and help his family endure what life throws at him. He is not the mall ninja type that has all the tacticool weapons, bottomless larder to draw from and makes mistakes like most of us do. He is an imperfect Man in an imperfect world trying to do the best he can for his family and those around him.” — MG “Well played, realistic, considerate of the interplay of your characters.” — WBA “More and more, with each new chapter I find myself falling into the universe you are building.” — Cat “Keep up the great work mate, really appreciate the gritty realism and very real seemingly normal problems in a tough time.” — PD “Personally I like stories that make me stop and think, rather than generic shoot 'em all and drive on.” — Russ
Book two of five. Although the individual books are a regular length for a novel, this really has the feel of a serial. It's quite good and feels fairly realistic but it's hard for me to judge. Even though it takes place not that far from me, I'm in Canada so I'm still a bit thrown but how many guns these people have. I know a couple people who hunt and have rifles but other than that, no one has a gun.
Aside from that, the rest so far is about the little things. Without power and little fuel for cars, not to mention having no phones, how do you deal with someone who's died? How do you make food last? With so few houses that have non-electric heat, people have to move to houses that do have heat. Conflicts are inevitable.
I'm looking forward to reading more of this. I can't wait to see what else happens with these people...and it's not even winter yet. That should prove to be an interesting struggle.
Being born & still living in NH makes the book all that enjoyable. Knowing places (well most) mentioned ropes me in more than the norm. Only being on book 2 and things could change, but for now neighbors helping & protecting neighbors in the small town ways is refreshing. I look forward to see how the book proceeds.
The end of the world as we know it. Well written and interesting characters. First book escape from Boston followed by this, working to set up a viable community.
