Another Nara book? Not quite. Encased in a cardboard envelope-dust jacket, the catalogue inside is a diary and a retrospective in their fullest meaning. Organised in chapters of Naras own life, with a prologue and epilogue, what unfolds is a personal journey; both of Nara and the images that have become so closely associated with his name. Includes split level sections (pages cut in half to create two booklets running alongside each other), a poster, a booklist insert, glossy full page reprints on shiny paper, mat page reproductions and Nara himself.
I checked this book out through an interlibrary loan and did not realize until I had already checked it out that it was completely in Japanese. The cover of mine looks different and is titled “the little star dweller” (in english) but after doing some research I found that this is the same book.
I was able to read it by scanning the pages using my iPhone’s text translation scanning feature and it honestly worked better than expected. Some of the sentences were grammatically incorrect but I was generally able to understand what was written.
Fascinating book for fans of Yoshitomo Nara’s artwork who are looking to dive deeper into his life and career. The layout of this book is also fantastic and I loved the way he captioned personal photos and some of the silly side stories he mentioned in the book.
If you can either read Japanese or don’t mind translating the book on your phone- I’d highly recommend!
