Dario Panetta wakes up in a low-rent apartment above a bar called the Bell in Hand, located in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. He has been drinking too much. He has been struggling to forget his past in the North End, along with all the violence that came with it. He is trying to get his life together, but keeps getting caught up in the drama of the people inside the Bell in Hand.

The Kilmartin brothers from Doyle’s Bar in South Boston are always eager to cause problems with the patrons and bartenders of the Bell in Hand. Dario ends up getting involved to protect his potential love interest, Shawna, a bartender at the Bell in Hand. Dario and the Kilmartin bothers clash on multiple occasions.

Dario is then presented with an opportunity from Mason, the captain of the South Boston Southie Saints motorcycle gang. Mason asks Dario to join the Southie Saints motorcycle gang. Mason also encourages Dario to get involved in crimes with the Southie Saints motorcycle gang to make them both some money. Dario and Sully, his best friend, assemble a crew of characters from the Bell in Hand. Each character has a specific skill set that can be used. Dario and his crew stumble their way onto the crime scene in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.

Dario makes a lot of promises and commitments, with no idea how he is going to deliver on them. He puts his life on the line and commits to the crime with Mason and the Southie Saints. He hopes this is a way out of living at the Bell in Hand, and the money from the crime will enable him to move forward with his life.

Gregg Matthews second installment of the Dario Panetta story line is brilliant. Mr. Matthews has discovered the formula to build upon the North End Boston character that you have been introduced too his initial story and create a more streamlined and compelling protagonist. Reading this story is like catching up with an old friend, albeit an old friend that had weathered some tough times and just barely rights himself when things get tough. And things do get tough for our old friend.

This story is a tale of a man coming to terms with taking on responsibility. It's not that Dario doesn't understand responsibility, he does, it's part of his character DNA. He takes full responsibility for those around him and sees that they are taken care of. The responsibility that Dario must shoulder in this edition is the responsibility of taking care of himself. His inner dissatisfaction of the life he leads forces him to make decisions that change his direction, that force him to better his lot in life and fight the world to show him new opportunities.

The new directions and attitude that Dario has found though his trial and error is one that I am looking forward to reading more of in the next story.

This book is a pleasure to read and if you are at familiar with the Boston area, you will find it so pleasing and there are many scenes that you can visualize accurately as the action unfold. I have to admit the description of many places exude an certain intangible mood that even made me realize that I need to revisit some of these scenes!

These novellas are a tasty snack to my reading habit, clocking in under 2 hours, that fit the bill for an two-fisted anti-hero that bestows a tale of action-adventure I recommend that you give this series a try, as I do find it time well spent.
