Burdened by family secrets, this cowboy rides alone
For twenty-five years, the case of the McGraw twins kidnapping has remained unsolved. As the eldest son, Cull oversees the McGraw horse ranch, wary of prying eyes. So when true-crime writer Nikki St. James comes forward with new information, Cull can't believe his father invites her onto the compound. His family has suffered enough—he's not about to let St. James snoop and ruin them completely. But Nikki finds the eldest McGraw's protectiveness as endearing as it is aggravating. After all, this case is personal to her, too… And her secrets can set the truth free—if they don't destroy the McGraws first.
B.J. Daniels started her life in Houston, Texas, before her family moved to Montana at age five. She grew up in a cabin in the Gallatin Canyon near Big Sky and later on Hebgen Lake near West Yellowstone. Because of her love for Montana, most of her books are set there. Born into a storytelling family, all she'd ever wanted to do was write stories. After a career as an award-winning newspaper journalist, she wrote and sold 37 short stories before she finally wrote her first book, ODD MAN OUT. Since then she has won numerous awards including a career achievement award for romantic suspense. She lives in Montana with her husband, Parker, two Springer Spaniels. When she isn't writing, she quilts, boats and. makes rope/fabric baskets. She always reads, loving to lose herself in a good book.
Nikki St. James, a successful true-crime writer, arrives in Whitehorse, Montana, to investigate the disappearance of baby twins 25 years ago. Unbeknown to the rest of his family, the twins' father, Travers McGraw, had invited Nikki to stay on the McGraw's horse ranch and have access to any information available and speak to anybody who was around at the time of the twins' kidnapping. Travers' oldest son, Cull, is less than impressed, fearing the renewed attention will have an adverse effect on his ailing father. Facing reluctant witnesses and resistant family members, can Nikki discover whether the twins are dead or alive? This was my first book by B.J. Daniels, and I did enjoy it. I think I might have enjoyed it more had I been familiar with her other Whitehorse Montana series. I didn't think the inclusion of the sheriff's storyline added anything to this plot. But readers familiar with all the recurring Whitehorse characters might see that differently. The mystery itself was really interesting and the desire to find out what had happened to the babies and who was behind their kidnapping kept me reading eagerly. It wasn't completely predictable, which was nice. I didn't find it particularly suspenseful and some of the writing was repetitive, but there were also some really good creepy, atmospheric and tense moments. I believe this is classified as a romantic suspense story, but the romantic aspects didn't convince me at all. Those parts were very bland. I'm also kind of a bit bummed that I hadn't realized this was the first in a new series, so while the end provides the predicted HEA as far as the romance is concerned, the mystery isn't fully resolved. Guess Dead Ringer, book 2, will provide further answers. Overall, a quick, clean, interesting read but nothing that will stay with me for very long. I received an ARC via NetGalley.

I am an avid B.J. Daniels fan. This book is set in Whitehorse, Montana, a setting she has used for other series, except we don't get much of a feel for the setting, unlike in her other books. I love her shorter form romantic-suspense novel and she generally excels at it. Not so much this time. The characters didn't have much depth, the plot was predictable and the romance was flat. The only thing that saved this book was the past pace. Not all issues were resolved and I can only hope that she has some surprises in store for the next book.
Nikki St. James is a true-crime author and has decided her next book is going to unravel the unsolved kidnapping of the McGraw twins 25 years ago. This book is not only professional but personal to Nikki. Her determination to find out what happened has everyone in the family, with the exception of the patriarch, Travers, on edge, and someone is willing to commit murder to keep this secret buried. 3 1/2-Stars
This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the first book in the Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping series. I was pulled right into this story, and I could not put this book down. This is a fast paced short book, but there is so much packed into this small book. I loved the characters in this book. This was a great read.
Dark Horse (Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping #1) by B.J. Daniels, was the first book I’ve read by this author, so I had no expectations. The overall story was OK, it kept me entertained. I believe it’s being classified as romantic suspense, I’d say the romance is secondary to the mystery of who kidnapped the McGraw twins 25yrs earlier. This is a very clean read and it has the expected HEA.
I felt the characters were very thinly written, providing just enough info for the reader to decide if they liked them or not. I found the writing included repetitive info, especially about Patty’s past, and any reader with historical knowledge will see the similarities between the kidnapping of the twins and the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. I also noticed the author didn’t take advantage of the beautiful scenery (Montana) to flesh out the book with more descriptive setting info. The romance / attraction between Cull and Nikki is rather quick, has no heat, and lacks that chemistry that most romances have between the lead characters. To that end I would say there was blandness to parts of the overall story.
The book is a quick read. The story is complete with no cliff hanger, but the door is wide open for the story to be continued with another brother, and additional info dealing with the twins.
I wish to express my thanks to the author, Harlequin Intrigue and NetGalley for the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
For me this was 2.75 star read which I’ll round up to 3 stars.
Too many characters, too many plot strands left unresolved and a totally dead-in-the-water romance combine to give this only 3 stars, despite the intriguing, intricate plot. Nikki St James is a true-crime writer who is revisiting the McGraw kidnapping of 25 years ago, in which twins were kidnapped. Neither the twins or the ransom money were ever found. Father Travers has given her free reign over his ranch in the hope her fresh eyes can uncover fresh clues. Nikki's father was found guilty of the crime, so another part of Nikki's mission is to clear his name. Apparently, romance develops between her and eldest son Cull McGraw, but I never got any sense of it!
B.J. Daniels is one of Intrigue's better authors, and can usually be counted on for a densely plotted thriller, but here she falls victim to what too many other Intrigue authors do when penning a mini-series - not adequately resolving major plot issues.
There's also the matter of too many characters. We get info-dumps about brother Ledger's romantic woes, presumably to set up the next book, but it's not necessary, because it adds zero to this story. Especially considering the other brother Boone doesn't get any real backstory. And what was the sheriff character doing getting so many points of view? We get a big info dump about her history, and it was completely unnecessary. I recognised plot elements from previous B.J. Daniels books I've read, which makes me fear she's simply regurgitating previous material.
And the romance! Was there even one?!? More than halfway through the book, Nikki still isn't sure if she even trusts Cull! They share one kiss, and barely have a personal conversation with one another, but they're declaring their love at the end. I didn't buy it for one minute. This was a case where the plot ate up all the word count. At least it was a good plot - but the lack of a proper resolution hurt that element! Nevertheless, B.J. Daniels is a far better writer than Elle James or Jenna Kernan, so I'm hoping she can wrap things up properly in the following books.
Nikki comes to Whitehorse Montana to write a true crime book about the McGraw infant twins kidnapping twenty five years ago and to clear her father's name. Cull is trying to protect him family from Nikki. The two of them are very attracted to each other. This book is romantic suspense. It's a quick read. There are a lot of twists and turns. I really like the author's writing style. I enjoyed this book. ****I voluntarily reviewed and gave my honest opinion of this Advanced Readers Copy of this book from NetGalley****
The hair-raising, heart-rending debut in her new suspense-packed trilogy!
“Remember what I told you about family secrets.” People will kill to keep them, she thought now as she looked at Marianne McGraw. The woman’s rocking didn’t change as Nikki stepped deeper into the room.”
Dark Horse by B.J. Daniels is the hair-raising, heart-rending debut in her new suspense-packed Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping trilogy. I’ve been excited to read this book since reading the sneak preview that was previously included in Outlaw’s Honor. That chilling snippet actually gave me goose bumps at the time and the picture in my mind of the woman in the rocker holding those baby dolls has remained with me since. I’m happy to report that this full-length book did not disappoint!
As Dark Horse begins, we meet Nikki St. James, a successful true crime author. Nikki is determined that her next case will involve unraveling the heart-breaking disappearance of two babies from their crib twenty-five years ago. Nikki has a close-to-her-own-heart ulterior motive in pursuing this particular story as Nikki’s father was tried and convicted of the twins’ kidnapping. Nikki’s mother still firmly believes that Nikki’s father was innocent. Nikki is bent on both clearing her father’s name and giving the family answers.
Nikki has reached out to the twins’ father, Travers McGraw, and he has given Nikki carte blanche in her investigation. She will be staying at the McGraw’s horse ranch and will have full access to whatever she needs. The rest of the family, including Cull McGraw, our hero, are less than impressed. Cull has no patience for dealing with yet another reporter. He’s worried about his ailing father’s health and plum tired of the constant household quarrels. Even so, the desire of the entire family to move on from the ghosts that have haunted them for a quarter of a century is palpable.
There is a clean romance included, but it seems superfluous to the who-done-it. There is little build-up to the development of the relationship and it seemingly happens overnight. That said, I liked both the characters and their HEA is warmly satisfying.
As with her other books, B.J. simultaneously develops multiple plotlines. In Dark Horse, B.J. has interwoven a subplot centering around Whitehorse’s sheriff. It will be interesting to see where B.J. takes this…
Following please find a few of my favorite quotes from Dark Horse:
“Don’t you want to know the kind of woman I am?” When he said nothing, she continued. “I’m like your father. When I start something I finish it.” Cull seemed to consider that before he turned toward her, his lips quirking into a grin as his eyes blazed with challenge. “Is that right?” Before she could react, he grabbed her and dragged her to him. His mouth dropped to hers in a demanding kiss as he pushed her back against the barn wall. --- “I have a suspicious mind, and murder is kind of my business.” --- “The first thing we’re going to do is buy you a pair of cowboy boots, woman.” She laughed. “That’s the first thing?” Cull dragged her into another kiss, this one hotter than the last. “Maybe not the first thing.”
I can’t wait to read the rest of this trilogy and to see the mystery finally solved. In addition, the other McGraw’s brother’s stories are begging to be told. One brother, Ledger, is in love with a woman married to an abuser. AND the other brother, Boone, is unhappy and downright ornery; He will need a special woman to grab his attention and fix his attitude.
A plethora of tense and downright creepy moments along with the intense desire to discover what happened twenty-five years ago kept me turning the pages into the early morning hours. My primary focus remains on the sixty-four-thousand-dollar question surrounding the kids’ disappearance, and, if they are still alive, where they are today. If you enjoy thrilling western romantic suspense, I would encourage you to check out B.J. Daniels’ books. Each one has been a winner and Dark Horse is no exception.
FINAL DECISION: Much more mystery/romantic suspense than romance, I enjoyed this book for what it is -- an introduction to the mystery of the disappearance of the McGraw twins. The romance was a nice addition, but certainly did not carry the story.
THE STORY: True crime writer Nikki St. James to write about (and intending to solve) the kidnapping of the McGraw twins. It has been twenty-five years since they disappeared and although some believe that the twins are dead and that the mother and her lover committed the crime, Nikki wants to prove there is another explanation. Nikki has gotten the father to agree to talk, but his eldest son, Cull McGraw, doesn't trust Nikki and wants to protect his family. Sparks fly and old secrets present new dangers.
OPINION: This book is really a mystery book with a side of romance. I thought the mystery is well set out and very intriguing. In fact, the mystery is my favorite of the B.J. Daniels books I have read so far. I thought the entire set up was creepy and definitely a well constructed and interesting conflict. I felt like I was in the middle of an Agatha Christie book with all the suspicious characters and secrets.
The book really is focused on Nikki as the "detective" of the story. She has her own secrets which have sent her into the investigation of the twins' disappearance. Cull is the dutiful eldest son who falls for Nikki. There really isn't much else about their characters, but there was enough to keep me in the game as I was far more intrigued by the mystery than the romance.
This is a short category romance so things happen quickly and I was impressed that the mystery itself was so well set out.
I look forward to the next book in the series with another romance (but knowing Daniels' style, there will be more about the mystery than the romance and that's okay).
WORTH MENTIONING: This book does NOT resolve the mystery of the kidnapping of the twins in its entirety. There are some answers, but clearly there is much more to learn. That is the overarching story so you will have to read the rest of the series for that to be resolved.
CONNECTED BOOKS: DARK HORSE is the first book in the Whitehouse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping series. I haven't read the other Whitehouse, Montana books so I don't know how closely related the series are. I didn't feel that I missed anything, however, in starting with this book.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Dark Horse is the first book in the exciting new Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping series, and this suspenseful mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. With the unique storyline, complex characters, secrets and lies, family drama, intense situations, and intriguing twists, this emotional roller-coaster of a story will capture you right from the start. This was a fantastic book, and I can't wait to see how the story unfolds!
When true crime writer Nikki St. James contacts Travers Mc Graw about doing a book about the kidnapping of his twin children, she doesn't tell him that she has a personal interest in the case, more than just wanting to write about it. When he invites her to come stay at the ranch, he allows her full access to everything and everyone, much to the chagrin of his family and friends.
She stages an accident involving the oldest son Cull, hoping that it will give her the opening she needs to get someone on her side. While he feels bad about the "accident," he has no problem letting her know that he, like everyone else on the ranch, doesn't want her there doing a story about the kidnapping. What neither of them expect is the unmistakable attraction between them, which both are determined to ignore, at least until they don't.
With the 25 year anniversary of the kidnapping coming up soon, everyone's worried about how it's going to affect Travers' already failing health. After having a heart attack, they're all convinced that Nikki being there is causing him more stress, but Travers refuses to listen to them. When Nikki starts putting together pieces of the story from different people's accounts from that night, especially the children's, she's finally seeing what could possibly be the truth about what happened all those years ago.
Will Nikki be able to get everyone to talk about what they remember from that night, or is there a more sinister reason for them to stay quiet? Could she have really figured out what is happening to Travers, to cause his health to decline so rapidly? Will she be able to handle the truth, even if it isn't exactly what she's hoping to find? Although the attraction between them is strong, will Cull and Nikki say goodbye without seeing what could be? Will either of them get the HEA they deserve? You're going to have to read this to find out! You won't be disappointed!
Although I'm not a fan of cliffhangers, they are sometimes necessary for certain stories. This book does end with a cliffhanger, but there are many questions that are answered by the end, so it doesn't leave you completely in the dark. The romance aspect of the story has more of a HFN type ending than a HEA, which I'm hoping that there will be more about their relationship in the next book. This was a great book, and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I strongly recommend this book, series, and great author.
I have voluntarily reviewed this arc provided by the publisher via NetGalley.
Cull and his brothers are rough around the edges for sure. They are amazing guys just been through alot and trying to cope. Each has demons of the night the twins were kidnapped and their mom was lost forever. Each has secrets as well. All are burdened with loss and pain. But none expected what really happened and neither will you. I had a feeling about one involved only because it is the first person you would think about especially when you look at the present and how horrible that person is to others but not all of the involvement.
Cull is the oldest and the most protective of everyone. He doesn’t want to see anyone in pain and needs to let go of the hope the twins are out there. He sees his dad in pain and suffering health wise but doesn’t know what to do. Him and his brothers are close but also closed off on some things. They are just trying to get through the anniversary of the kidnapping but that is impossible with Nikki in town. And his dad is the one who asked her to come. At first they are all a wall to her. But circumstances change and Cull does what he can to help her.
He also becomes attracted to her but is afraid to show it. They are opposites and he is afraid that she will harm his family. Nikki is tenacious and smart but has been burned by men so wary of Cull. The attraction between the two is obvious and as they get to know one another they become friends and support each other. they even respect one another and want what is best for Cull’s family. but each is afraid to admit their feelings. They will give us some sexy scenes, heated moments and danger as well but not the admission of feelings. They almost lose something wonderful because of it.
A fast paced story full of danger and a mystery that draws you in and keeps you dangling to the end. Secrets revealed, truths told and love is found as what happened to the twins is figured out and it isn’t what you would think.
Good beginning to the new series. Nikki is a true crime writer who has picked a twenty-five-year-old kidnapping case as the subject of her next book. She has contacted Travers McGraw, patriarch of the family, and received his blessing and an invitation to stay at the ranch and interview anyone she wants. What she hasn't told anyone about is her personal connection to the case. Her father was one of the accused kidnappers, and she wants to find the information that will clear his name.
Cull is Travers McGraw's oldest son. He was a child when his infant brother and sister were kidnapped, but it still haunts him today. He is protective of his father and the rest of the family and resents the attention they still receive because of the disappearance. The upcoming twenty-fifth anniversary is expected to be even worse. He isn't happy about Nikki's presence, fearing that whatever she stirs up will be detrimental to Travers' already shaky health.
The suspense of the story is really good. Nikki has a good track record of being able to unearth previously unknown information about cases. I liked that she doesn't just depend on police and newspaper reports, instead going back to the sources. I loved seeing how she was able to pull unrealized memories from various people. I especially enjoyed her conversations with the brothers and her compassion and sensitivity as she questioned them. Nikki also has good instincts, and through her eyes, several people move up the suspect list. It's obvious that someone doesn't want Nikki digging into the past when she is attacked along a deserted road. There are several twists and turns leading to a couple of surprise revelations. One deserving person gets what is coming to them thanks to Nikki's work. Some new information about the kidnapping is uncovered, resolving some questions but leaving others unanswered. I'm looking forward to the other books and getting the rest of the story.
The development of the relationship between Nikki and Cull doesn't take up much of the story. Though Cull is initially antagonistic to her, he can't deny that he is also attracted. Though protective of his family, he can't help but admire her determination. I liked seeing him warm up to her as he sees how much she cares about finding the truth. Nikki is just as attracted to Cull. Though each suspect that their feelings are growing deeper than expected, neither is willing to take the risk of bringing them out into the open. I loved seeing Cull's two brothers gang up on him to get him to see the truth and do something about it. The ending was pretty sweet, and I'm looking forward to seeing them in later books.
I received this book through Netgalley and this is my unsolicited honest review. I loved this book. It was an amazing read. It kind of reminded me of the Hamilton series but this one pulled me in a lot more than that series ever managed to. The pull of the family with their desire to move on from ghosts that have haunted them for 25 years is immense. As the mystery begins to unravel the characters pull you in with an intensity you will not want to give up. Nikki is an interesting being. She will take any risks, do anything, in order to get the story and to solve the crime that she is writing about. But she has a problem when it comes to getting emotionally involved in the story. So when she becomes way to involved in the case of the missing twin boys, she will do anything to solve the mystery. Especially since the man who died in jail, the man believed to be the kidnapper, was her father. She wants to prove he did not steal the twins and she wants to bring peace to the family that has not had an answer for 25 years. Cull is tired. He is tired of his father believing that his brothers are still alive. And he is tired of all the squabbles in his household when reporters come to write more about the missing boys. So when the newest reporter, some real life crime writer, comes to his home and brings up the past he will do anything to protect his family. But he never anticipated that she may be able to solve the crime. Or that she may be what the family needs to finally move on. This book is full of suspense, intrigue, heartache and romance. You will not want to miss out on the newest BJ Daniels series. I can not wait for the next book in this series. ~A Book Obsessed Chicks Review Team Selection.
Highly entertaining, emotional, gripping, mysterious and danger filled romantic journey. They may have found their personal HEA but the Mystery of the missing twins remains to be solved.
Cull McGraw oldest son and all around alpha male cowboy is not happy with the idea of rehashing the mystery of his twin siblings kidnapping 25 years ago and believes that each grain of hope is slowing killing his father. Nikki St. James is a tenacious investigator and true crime writer looking for answers to this kidnapping is since being invited to dig into the past by the twins father. This case is personal to her since her father was accused of the crime but died in transport to the prison many years ago (a fact she keeps to herself while digging). Very intriguing reading.
Nikki is a true crime writer and along the way she tends to solve mysteries. Nikki was called my the father to write a book on the McGraw twins kidnapping, a mystery that had people thinking her father and the mother of the twins had something to do with it. Its been 25 years since the kidnapping and the father thinks Nikki can maybe help things out and his oldest son as well as his current wife is less then thrilled about her snooping around where she shouldn't be.
I loved this book, it kept me on my toes. I loved seeing the story and mystery of the missing twins unfold. I Loved that there was plenty of hints along the way to keep me guessing and changing my mind. I loved that I was sort of half right but still need to see more of what happens in the next book to see if my suspicions are right. I loved that even though there was that spark between Cull and Nikki that interest they had didn't over power the book, its not much of a romance but more a mystery if you are into that thing and with how this book turned out I'm all for it. I can't wait to see what happens next in the following book!
The McGraw twins kidnapping has remained a mystery for 25 yrs. And every anniversary has continued to tear at the family's heart and soul. Nikki St James is a true crime reporter who has investigated unsolved crimes and on occasion found new evidence and solved them. She believes she has new information for the McGraw case, and the wrong people had been charged, Nikki intends to put the record straight and catch the correct evil doers. The children's father is convince the twins are still alive but Cull, his oldest son, is not so optimistic, and he's concerned for his father's health. This was a very entertaining book, full of suspense and intrigue. The exciting conclusion is full of long awaited answers....and some unanswered questions. I'm looking forward to the next book.
This book held my attention from the very beginning. You can tell everyone in the family is stressed by Nikki being at the ranch but I like the fact she won't give up until she finds the truth. The book leaves you wanting to read the next book to see who was after her & Freida. It is full of suspense and intrigue but a little different from what BJ usually writes. It is a very good read...I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next book to get more answers!
Dark Horse is the first book in Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping series. Each installment is about a McGraw brother finding romance. Dark Horse is Cull's account. He's the oldest and isn't looking for the attraction he feels for Nikki. For me, the romance is just a bit of side narrative. The main focus is the puzzle of the kidnapping and possible murder of the two youngest siblings which happened 25 years ago. Nikki is a true crime writer. She is known for helping to solve old mysteries while doing research to write her novels. I'm crazy about Nikki and really enjoyed following her investigation. She's very likeable, and there are some eerie and exciting occurrences along the way. This is an interesting whodunit, and it left me wanting to continue to find out what's next for the McGraw family.
Wow, this book was interesting. A true crime author that will go to no end to get the story. Twins that have been gone 25 years. There is intrigue, mystery, drama and a touch of romance blended together to make a super book. The step mother is quite the awful person, isn't she! And her daughter is needed some serious parental guidance. So we have plenty of characters to dislike. I have to say I was not thrilled with the main character either. The book brought out strong emotions when, in my mind, makes for a fabulous read. I felt this was a real page-turner.
I really liked Dark Horse. I admit I put it aside after one part in the beginning of the book where the heroine does something so stupid you just want to scream at her. After that, the book was great. The kidnapping was a mystery that I was excited to find the resolution to. The further you read, the more you want to know what happened. While this is part of a series (meaning some of the case will continue in future books), enough questions are answered that you feel satisfied with the ending. It's definitely worth the time to read. I would happily read it again.
4 for story, more of a thriller than a romance, which was good for me. If rating it on romance compared to others I've read, it would be like a 1...two kisses, that was it. I'm guessing that Harlequin Intrigue is more about the mystery and suspense and maybe over the course of the series then there is more romance. I don't plan on reading the next one, so I can't really say.
I love Cull and Nikki's story. Can't wait on the next books to find out what happened to the twins twenty-five years ago. Great story by an amazing author.
B.J. Daniels has another hit with the first book in the new Whitehorse Montana Series. Nikki St.James is an true crime writer who takes on the mystery of the kidnapping of the McGraw twins which happened some 25 years ago. The family has mixed feeling about Nikki coming into their lives and their home. Who's secrets will she bring to light? Will they find out why Nikki picked this crime to uncover? Does she maybe have a personal interest in this case? So many mysteries all tied together in one brilliantly written book! It's been awhile since I've read a Harlequin Intrigue, but this book got me hooked. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley for so graciously gifting me this book to review.
Another amazing mystery, suspense by the amazing B.J. Daniels. The secrets, mystery, suspense and danger will keep you on the edge throughout the book. You will not be able to put this book down till you finish it. Some romance but this is mainly a mystery.
It’s hard not knowing what happened to family members, in fact, it’s a personal hell that none of the McGraw family has escaped from or expects to any time soon. The McGraw twins were kidnapped 25 years ago and never found either alive or their bodies. There is no closure for the family only more unanswered questions… and the consequences of that single event so many years ago.
Now a woman with a reputation of finding answers and solving unsolvable crimes is staying at the McGraw ranch looking into the twins’ disappearance. Nikki is good at what she does, there’s no doubt about that. Yet this time she has a personal agenda, one that no one on the ranch can know about.
Cull McGraw has no intention of trusting or helping this upstart crime reporter. He doesn’t trust her as far as he could toss her. His father’s been taken in by innocent eyes, but not him. Oh, she’ll be around the ranch but he’ll be keeping close watch on her every minute. There’s something off about this woman, she has secrets of her own and Cull intends to discover what they are… and if they involve his family.
I’ve read B. J. Daniels’ work for years and I never tire of her gift for storytelling. She effectively brings us back to a tragic event years later. The dust has settled, the people moved on, reluctantly while the memories hold them back. But there’s more beneath the surface and this group of stories will give us answers, romance and perhaps finally a happy ending… but that is yet to be seen. I won’t call these stories cliffhangers, for they are not truly – but they do continue the overarching story throughout them all. I’d strongly suggest that you settle in for the long haul on this series, I’ve no doubt that it’s going to be well worth the time.
I enjoyed Nikki and Cull’s interactions. There doesn’t always have to be trust for there to be attraction – one is natural, the other earned. Watching these two work the case, discover truths and deal with each other was entertaining with a mixture of sad and happy moments. If you enjoy Mystery, Romantic Suspense or Contemporary Romance then you’ll be quite happy with Dark Horse. Just plan on picking up Dead Ringer and Rough Rider in September and October… you know you have to get the entire story. I’d recommend this story and encourage you to follow what is to come. And if you collect Harlequin stories, you might find the series relating to this new series somewhere in your bookshelves.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
I have seen B.J. Daniels name associated with Harlequin western romance for some time now, but don’t remember reading any of them. Dark Horse is a great book to start with since it is part of a new series that takes place in Whitehorse, Montana. I found B.J. Daniels’ writing style to be easy to follow, the romance sweet and clean with suspenseful moments but not really edge of your seat action.
The story deals with one of a parents’ worse nightmares, kidnapping of their children. In this case, the kidnapping happened long ago, twenty-five years to be exact. All this time with no closure, has taken its toll on the family. Knowing this, oldest son Cull is against the true-crime writer who has been invited to the ranch. While this is not true enemies to friends to lovers romance, it has a lot of the elements.
I would have liked for the mystery of the kidnapped twins to have been completely solved with them being alive and well but closure still eludes the McGraw family as this book ended. In that way, there is a cliff-hanger but Cull and Nikki’s romance does come to a happier conclusion. I enjoyed this story and would purchase the next just to find out more about what really happened twenty-five years ago. . An ARC of the book was given to me by the publisher through Net Galley.
What's it's about: Burdened by family secrets, this cowboy rides alone
My thoughts Secrets has a way of all ways coming out no matter how hard you try to keep them and they all ways come out ,and believe me , there's alot of secrets that can either help or brake the McGraws .And while this is a romance it's also a mystery, but I would say it's more mystery then romance , because it's a slow burning type of romance ,or at lest that's what it read as while I was reading it. So if your into this type of story , all I can say is the secrets, mystery, suspense and danger will keep you on the edge of your seat. There some characters that your like, fall in love with ,and feel sorry for and of course down right can't stand , while some will make you even feel like they need to be put over a knee and giving a whipping to. But to find out which is which you have to read the book. With that said I want to say thinks to NetGalley for giving me a chance at find a new to me author as well as a new series I want to read more of in change for my honest opinion.
I was so intrigued by this book and looking forward to the books that follow. This book was a great mix of mystery and romance, with a bunch of twists in the story! There is a lot of action going on in the story and so many secrets that will come to light when Nikki starts digging into the past. Cull McGraw was not very happy when his father brought a true crime writer to their ranch to try and solve the mystery of a kidnapping from 25 years ago. He finally agrees to help Nikki when his father asks him to cooperate, as well as his two brothers.
There is such sadness to this family with all that went on before and after the kidnapping, and Nikki is a pretty good detective as she digs for the truth. I won’t give away the plot, but the suspected kidnappers were not who the police accused – Nikki’s father and Cull’s mother!
While part of the mystery is revealed, there is still more that is unsolved. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as I hope more will be revealed in each book and I really want to learn more about what happened with Ledger and Abby, and see who Boone will fall for since he doesn’t think there is a woman that he wants to “lasso”. I loved the ending where Cull’s brothers had to talk some sense into Cull before Nikki walked out of his life.
Nikki St. James is a successful true‐crime writer. Recently she came upon the information that her father who she never knew, had be falsely accused (according to her mother) and sentence for the kidnapping and murder of the McGraw infant twins, almost 25 years ago. Her father had been the horse trainer at the ranch and had sworn he was innocent, but never was able to prove it as he died on the way to prison in a vehicular accident. Nikki wants to know the truth and makes contact with the still grieving father, Travers. He is very ill, wants to find the truth before he dies and invites her to the ranch. The grieving mother has been in a mental facility since after the babies disappeared. Nine years after the kidnapping, the nanny of the children, Patricia had returned to the ranch with a baby in tow. She married her former boss. When Nikki comes to the ranch she is met with hostility from Patricia, her daughter, Kitten, two of the surviving sons, Cull and Boone, (the youngest brother, Ledger is welcoming) and others. Yet with her experience and expertise not only does she manage to clear her father's name, but also saves Travers' life, give hope that the missing twins might still be found, and also win the love of the oldest son. Not all the questions were answered, so hopefully they will be addressed in the next book. Since this is # 1, the next books now doubt will find the twins, and love for Boone and Ledger. I read a free ARC from netgalley.com for an honest review, and recommend to readers of mystery, crime solving, romance ...etc.
B.J. Daniels has another spellbinding thriller blockbuster on her hands! Dark Horse, book #1 in her Whitehorse, Montana: The McGraw Kidnapping series introduces a cast of characters and a compelling storyline centered around the kidnapping of the McGraw twins twenty-five years ago. The ransom was paid but nothing was ever heard from the kidnapper/s again. Are the twins dead or, as their father, Travas McGraw fervently hopes, are they still alive? Their mother, Marianne McGraw never recovered from the trauma of the kidnapping and spends her days rocking her life away clutching two dolls in a mental institution.
Enter Nikki St. James, a true-crime writer who receives permission from Travas McGraw to travel to the ranch to interview the family and those living at the ranch in the hopes she can solve the mystery as she so successfully has for most of her true-crime novels. After overcoming his mistrust, eldest son, Cull McGraw joins Nikki in helping her answer some of the questions from the past,
Once I started reading this story I had to just keep turning the pages. Nikki finds many answers but there are still lots more questions to be answered in the next books in the series. So very much looking forward to Dead Ringer, book #2 in the series.
BJ Daniels starts her new Whitehorse Montana miniseries off with a bang in Dark Horse. The overarching story of trying to find out what happened to the McGraw twins, kidnapped twenty-five years ago drives the action and brings true crime writer Nikki St. James to Whitehorse. The oldest McGraw son Cull distrusts her onsite, but reluctantly agrees to help when he realizes it is the only way to figure out what happened. The kidnapping is the focus of the storyline, the romance between Nikki and Cull somewhat secondary. The who kidnapped the twins portion of the mystery is resolved by the end. However, in true miniseries fashion we are going to have to tune in for the next installments to figure out what happened to the twins. I know I will be tuning in.
