As bloody, crazy and suspenseful as ever, but differently paced.
Ryan Casey is an author who truly understands the elements of the genres he writes in. And that’s why his hit zombie apocalypse serial, Dead Days, is so addictive; Casey knows what makes the zombie genre great, and he focuses on those elements to really satisfy his fans.
I’m loving how, even in the eight season, the infected are still a very real threat to the survivors and frequently cause problems for them. That’s how it was in season one, and that’s how it is now. It shows that the author is sticking to his guns and continuing to implement the things that made the first books great into the series as it stands, and I love it when writers are aware of their strengths and their fanbase.
One thing that is different in this season, though, is the pacing; of course, with only four episodes instead of the usual six, you can expect the flow of the narrative to feel faster. But it almost felt like the plot was affected, as if there were more deus ex machine moments thrown in to get characters out of certain situations and into others as quickly as possible.
All in all, the atmosphere of the series did not change and I am glad it didn’t. There was a lot of bloodshed, suspense, and some really well-placed shocker moments. I hope we get to see a lot more of some of the old characters interacting with the new ones in season nine.
