Falling for murder? Book 2 in Mom and Christy's Cozy Mysteries Series. Each mystery is complete. Read in any order Mom and Christy have their first official client! All they need to do is find out who is selling secrets to Turing Tech’s competitor. And being caterers, a party is the perfect cover for snooping (and a legal way to get paid). There’s just a few problems:
Their prime suspect winds up falling seventeen stories to his death, and their new client, Barbara Turing, is arrested for his murder. Can they prove she’s innocent? Or is their first client a murderer? Find out in this funny, quick read cozy novella. No graphic violence. No language. Cute cat!
Apple Pies and Alibis is Book 2 in the Mom and Christy Cozy Mystery Series and can be read as a standalone novella. It is a fun, quick read about a mother, Jo, and her daughter, Christy. They are caterers who are also investigators. The supporting characters are not as well thought out as the main characters, but they don’t have to be.
Basically, this is a whodunit with all the inherent tropes, and stereotypes that are the cannon fodder for these stories, but trimmed down to make them more readily digestible than Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatha Christie. It’s good in the way I like Flan or Nachos: something to snack on with a crap-ton of empty calories. I think I might try one more of these and then I’ll probably be done with this series, unless it grips me.
This one has Christy and her mom catering a company party themed with apples. I wonder what company is sponsoring the party? (Tongue firmly planted in cheek.) An argument, a fire alarm, and a body falling 17 stories, and we are in a murder mystery. Good and quickly consumed like a fine apple pie dessert.
This is the second in the series and the second one I've read (since I like to read cozies/series in chronological order, doesn't everyone?) These only take about two hours to read (I read this one sitting in my mechanic's office and had enough time left over to start Obsidio) but I must say I enjoy the author's style and humor. These are unique in the sense Mom is a Filipino caterer and actress and her daughter, Christy is working for Mom after her marriage breaks up. Mom's best friend is a Chinese restaurant owner, Wenling, and there is even a cat, Moriarity, to keep the humor winsome. It also can't be left out that anyone who has ever been embarrassed by their mother will surely relate to how Christy feels at times. I already have the third downloaded to my Kindle and since I have to go back to my mechanic's tomorrow, I will probably read it and then continue with Obsidio...sort of like Groundhog Day, but different.
I had forgotten how funny Christy's mom was when it came to working a case. Since they weren't officially detectives, Mom was running this case/catering gig as an undercover case. The boss of a tech company had hired them to find out who was selling their tech secrets to the competition. I love the author's humorous writing style and description of the crazy things that happened to them sometimes before a case even started. This one began as a bit of a flashback. By the time that Mom aka Jo had tested her guy-falling-out-of-a-window theory at home and told their police friend, DC Cooper, that she knew what was going on, I was totally sold on her idea. Then came the clever twist at the very end. By then I had guessed part of it.
This was a really fun and quick afternoon read, and I'm glad I took time to return to this series.
This hovers somewhere between a 3.5 and 4. This was my first read in this series and I found it surprisingly enjoyable. I could relate to the mc and her mother in many personal ways, which was refreshing. The main drawback was the need for some editing, though it certainly wasn't as bad as some I've run into in the past. The lack of commas, or some that were misplaced, was one issue. Some small amounts of repetition was another. Overall I enjoyed this one, and already have plans to backtrack to the beginning of the series.
Great fun, intriguing mystery, some romance, and the greatest mom-daughter detective team I've ever read about. Excellent read, clean, wholesome, funny.
This was a good read. Funny, fast to read, and kept you wondering till the end. I also like the fact that Christy Murphy doesn't use sex scenes or cuss words to tell her story.
The second short story in the cozy mystery series.
After her husband left her, Christy decided to move back to her mother’s house and help her in the catering business. Also, they solve crimes together!
Barbara Turing runs a computer firm and she knows that someone in her company is selling their secrets to competitors. To find out who, Barbara wants to hire Christy and her mom, Jo. But they’re not licensed private eyes, so they’ll just cater a lunch and ask a lot of questions.
Before long, Jo and Christy narrow down the suspects to three and one of them is the most obvious choice. Jo tells Barbara who they suspect and Barbara confronts the man in his office. Christy heads back to their catering van. While she’s on the yard, the office building’s fire alarm goes off… and a body falls out the window. He’s the man suspected of selling secrets and he was in the office alone with Barbara just moments before. So, now Jo and Christy’s client is a suspected murderer.
This was another humorous, fast-paced short mystery story. It’s similar to the first one in tone, a quick and fun read. The office party has an apple theme.
Jo and Christy are just as much fun as in the first book. Christy has, again, trouble driving the large van and Jo is just as personable and chatty as ever. They have a warm relationship but Christy realizes (briefly) that her mom has other sides to her. Sometimes Jo can still embarrass her daughter, especially when a certain handsome detective is concerned.
Felt choppy in various parts of the short story. Enough characters to follow and keep track of. Quite a few typo mistakes throughout. Need a good Proofreader. Christy is an adult and should act mature. Many times here she acted stupid or cheesy. This, book two is the first book I have read by this author. Will watch for book one to go on special and try it out.
I love the relationship between the mother and daughter. I wish the daughter would catch on to things as fast as her mother. I enjoyed the case they work on. I can’t wait to find out what her ex-husband is up to.
I borrowed a copy of this book from Kindle Unlimited.
Quick & fun read. Light mystery but with enough twist and turns to keep me interested and guessing. I really enjoy this book and I look forward to reading more from this series!
I actually only finished this story because the blurb had said "quick read" so I figured I wouldn't be wasting too much time.
I can't pinpoint what about this story stifled me. Most likely, it is that Christy has no role. She's a caterer who can't cook, a driver who can barely drive, an investigator who doesn't solve the case ...
Granted, I didn't read book 1. Still, it was relatively easy to put the characters in place, complete with stereotypes; I don't think that was the problem. As many cozy mysteries as I read, I was surprised not to be able to pinpoint a reason, but it just fell flat for me.
Mother and daughter duo, Jo and Christy, take readers on another wacky yet serious crime solving adventure! A "must read" murder mystery to put on your "to read" list. Highly recommend.
Mango Cake and Murder #1- Heartwarming and funny. I love the relationship between the mother and daughter; they reminded me of other m/d relationships like Joy Luck Club, etc. The mother is wise, caring, sensible, a matchmaker (her daughter's) and is loved by all. The daughter realizes how great and loved her mother is and there's the extended family, too. A love interest and a cat with personality. Can't forget the murder and the characters involved with that family. A funny, quickly read suspense.
Apple Pies and Alibis #2 - Another funny book. A well written comedy with a wonderful cast of characters supporting Mom and Christy as they solve another mysterious death, find a sandwich thief and the employee selling company secrets; while they successfully caterer parties and luncheons. When you finish the book, you're sad, but still happy from reading, that the book is finished and you don't have Milkshakes and Murder on hand.
Milkshakes and Murder #3 - They're at it again! Another well written, fun filled story with our favorite ladies and a well thought out plot that keeps the reader immersed in the intrigue, suspense and now, a touch of romance. The characters are interesting and the dialog real. Some of the characters are developing into their full potential and it's fun to watch the growth. There's new characters that will be seen more in future books. Ms. Murphy doesn't disappoint the reader with her writing and sense of humor.
Mocha and Murder #4 - This is a pretty good story! Well written, funny, intriguing and a different path followed than in previous books. Add a PASSEL of new characters, interesting and entertaining, along with a plot that keeps the reader interested. The reader isn't disappointed with the author's writing style and her sense of humor.
Coconuts and Crooks #5 – A well written, interesting, serious but informative story about Christy and her mom’s trip to the Philippines to solve the murder of her mom’s sister. Things go as usual and there’s another murder to solve. The characters are well developed and their dialog is realistic and interesting. The plot keeps the reader immersed in the story and Ms. Murphy’s descriptions paint interesting views of life there and their problems with the murders. This story doesn’t disappoint the reader. The note from the author is interesting on it’s own and worth reading. I contacted the author to review her books.
Honey Buns and Homicide #6 - This is not my first book by Ms. Murphy, but I had so much fun reading it. Not only that, but I caught myself immersed in the pages waiting to see what was next and if I was right about the baddie. This book reads so much like a conversation between friends, drinking ice tea on the front porch. It's well written, interesting, well thought out and filled with humor while being a substantial read. I'm always looking for the next Murphy book; there's no disappointment or stupid formulas, but someone who writes an interesting humorous story. I contacted the author to review her book.
The Secret Truth of Time - I've read Mango Cake and Murder, and Apple Pies and Alibis, and was surprised at the difference between those books and The Secret Truth of Time. Totally and completely apples and oranges. This well written paranormal book is fast paced and difficult to put down. I read it in one sitting. The characters are interesting and the plot is intriguing. The Time Travel alone is a major character! Ms. Murphy is one heck of a storyteller. Don't expect humor and lightheartedness in this story. It is spellbinding!
So much fun! I cannot believe I didn't stumble upon this series sooner! This one was even more suspenseful than the first one. It will keep you guessing the whole truth right ‘till the very end. It was impossible to put down! You gotta love this duo! I recently found myself asking: “What would Jo do in this situation?”, because she always thinks fast on her feet and she can talk her way out of anything! Christy is super relatable, as usual. (By the way, getting that casual "what's up?" text from an ex who ghosted you would be infuriating! The "casually reappearing ghost" is the worst!)
This is the kind of series that would always be safe to recommend to someone or to suggest for a book club. Entertaining, wholesome and void of any offensive content. A safe bet! It has got to be made into a TV show, ASAP! It's funny and it totally keeps you hooked! I got completely immersed in it. It’s suspenseful in a completely stress-free way, a true cozy mystery. I HIGHLY recommend it!
Apple Pies and Alibis is Book 2 in the Jo and Christy series, a mother/daughter sleuthing team, who combine catering with their undercover detective work. This particular book has the duo looking into who’s been selling Turing Tech’s inside info to a competitor, but soon the case turns into a murder investigation.
This is a super quick read. I found the writing slightly manic and scattered at times, but I continued reading along all the same. This isn’t great writing, but it was a good way to pass a lunch hour. I grabbed it during a free promo, so I had nothing to lose.
I like that the author has written this series as true standalone books, so they really can be read in any order like the description states. I also love that she has based the books on her own relationship with her mom. Overall, this book was an okay read and worthy of 3.5 stars in my opinion.
I enjoyed reading "Apple Pies and Alibis." I think I enjoyed the first book more because it was much more humorous & the Mother - Daughter relationship was so on point, but I liked that this book continued on with the Mom & Christy characters which I had grown fond of in book #1.
To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what happened to the Christy character in this book because she seemed to take on the role of a whiney child in alot of the scenes. Just tagging along after her Mom. Whiney adults are pretty annoying all the way around and not funny. I think that was where things fell flat for me in this book. The Mother - Daughter dynamic that was so funny & spot on in the 1st book was missing.
This is still an enjoyable book to read & I recommend it. Looking forward to reading book 3.
Christy moves back with her mother Jo. Jo auditions for an acting part and Christy takes a catering job to help solve a murder. The only problem is Christy doesn’t know how to cook and she asks her friend to help with the catering. Christy asks around to find out who is leaking information about the murder. Christy and Jo were hired by Barbara Turing of Turing Tech a tech company to find out who is selling secrets to their competitor. The prime suspect fell to his death and Barbara is arrested for the murder. So Christy and Jo are on the case to solve the murder. I really enjoyed this impressive cozy mystery novel. I received this free e-book an am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Rec'd free via newsletter subscription. #2 in the series, this is a stand-alone mystery, though I think you'd be better off reading them in order to fully appreciate the character development and interactions. Christy and her mom run a catering business, and they have first official client for their unofficial PI side business as well. Turing Tech has a leaker, and under the guise of catering a lunch for the techies, Christy and her mom try to get to the bottom of the leak before any more info is leaked that may ruin Turing Tech's chances at a contract. When one of their suspects winds up dead at the luncheon, they're in a bind, but they remain determined to solve the mystery...especially since their "client" is a suspect now.
Short story, but the characters are fleshed out. Nice view of a mother/daughter relationship
As Christie and Mom use the catering business to investigate a leak of company data, an upper management staff member falls out of a 7 story window to his death. Was it murder, an accident, or did he commit suicide? Is it connected to the leak? With the help of Christy's strong memory, Mom's observant nature, curiosity and communication skills lead the way to finding the answers.
Mom Jo and her daughter run a catering company/ unofficial detective agency. While on a “catering “ job looking into a tech company to find out who is stealing and selling secrets another crime happens. As Jo and Chrissy look into it they run into twists and turns. The mother daughter duo are hilarious. This is a light and funny quick read that you will enjoy! I highly recommend this book if you are looking into a quick, funny mystery.
This is a quick, light read mystery that includes some humor along the way. I enjoyed it. I really hadn't figured out who the culprit was ahead of time and couldn't really see a motive. The mom is cute and clever. I think it might have been better to read the books in order to better understand the main character but the mystery/story stands on its own.
No sex or language. Obviously has violence since someone is murdered but it isn't graphic.
The story line was fine. I also read book #1. My problem is that there were too many instances of extra words such as but, and, the and at. This slowed down the reading time considerably. On three occasions a character was name in a paragraph and they were not even in the scene. For instance, a character was called "Rick" when Rick died in the previous chapter. Do you have someone edit your books before publishing? I don't mean to be harsh but I cannot enjoy a book if I have to mentally edit what I'm reading so frequently. Barb
Quite good amusing murder mystery comedy with Christy and her Mom Jo and helpers. Barbara wants Christy and Jo to find out who is leaking secrets to their competitors before a big contract is due. The main suspect dies, so then they have to help clear Barbara of murder. It’s light and fluffy cozy read with a murder mystery. Love Christy and Jo. Humorous and totally enjoyed reading this entertaining book.
The second cozy mystery of the series was just as entertaining as the first one! This time our two amateur sleuths are hired to track down a company leak under the rude of catering a big celebratory party. In the middle of the party, their main suspect becomes a murder victim, and the woman who hired them becomes the Police's main suspect. This story is a great quick read and never gets boring.
This is the 2nd in the series. The main characters are Christy and her mother, Jo. They are working their 2nd case and having a heck of a time trying to figure out who is selling the company secrets. They do figure it out but then the bad guy falls from a window on the 17th floor. Then they have figure out who had it in for the bad guy. They figure things out but sometimes you wonder how.
This was a cute book and easy reading. I was surprised I didn't figure the plot out. I usually know at least by mid book but was surprised by the twists were .very good 👍.The characters work well together with a few laughs. Has heart without being sappy about it..The only thing I didn't like was the ending,it was too abrupt. A good clean cozy mystery/romance. Locte
This was the 2nd in the series (did not read the first) because I need a book which had apple in the title for a challenge. It was a short read (156 pages) on my Kindle. I guess each mystery in the series is complete in each book, and it wasn't a hard read. That is just it...an eight grader could have written this book.
