2/5 - Hard to get through...

So, here's the issue: I know what the goal of this book is - to give an overview of the whole of the history of a country. This is hard to do well, as there is little to no space to actually delve deeper into any given topic, leaving the whole experience quite...bland.

On top of this hurdle, the writing was very much like that of a wikipedia entry, as in "the total area of the country is....the total population is....". I did not buy a book to read what I could have read online, I bought the book so that I could be presented information in an interesting and involving way.

I don't regret having gotten it, nor finding out about places like Ragusa and the ins-and-outs of the Serbian Middle-Ages, but I wish it had been written differently.

Аутор на јако приступачан начин приказује кључне моменте српске историје и то од праисторије па све до савременог периода. Одлична као подсетник о преломним догађајима и утицајним људима које приказује у контексту али веома сажето, дакле без претераног детаљисања. Приступ је прави научни, максимално објективно сагледане чињенице, без политичке или националне острашћености.

Саће испаст да имам нешто много против ове књиге јер три од пет изгледа врло мршаво, али тек сам сад обратио пажњу на ово Гудридсово упутство за оцјењивање које каже да је тројка "Ај лајкд ит", док је четворка "Ај рили лајкд ит", што би значило да би ово могло да се протумачи као нешто између рецимо седмице и осмице или тако некако, што је по мом мишљењу објективно. То да ова књига добије исту оцјену као рецимо Еуклидов прозор је проклетство нумеричких оцјена. Генерално, великом броју књига које сам раније ривјуирао треба снизити оцјену, а поготово Еуклидовом прозору, али сад ми је мрско да то ручно радим.

Но, да се ми вратимо овој књизи. Ово је сасвим солидан покушај да се уради прилично тежак (немогућ?) задатак да се период од преко хиљаду година сабије у нешто преко тристо педесет страна. Нормално је да ће неки дијелови ту жестоко да трпе, па је тако комплетан средњи вијек претрчан поприлично брзо, те нећете успјети ни да се снађете а већ ће испред вас ко на траци да се нанизају разни Стефани, Вукани, Душани и остали, од којих ће већина њих бити споменута једва два или три пута. Наравно, Антић и не претендује да буде Константин Јиречек. Књига се најдетаљније бави дешавањима из деветнаестог и двадесетог вијека и даје сасвим задовољавајући приказ разноразних устанака против Турске тј. Отоманске империје, дешавања током два свјетска рата, функционисања разних верзија Југославије, распада њене посљедње верзије и ових несрећних ратова који су се касније десили. Нажалост, како је објављена 2017. године, није могла да испрати комплетну владавину Александра Вучића.

О Чедомиру Антићу не знам много, тј. не знам заправо ништа, знам да сам га видио једном или двапут на ТВ-у и то је то, иначе немам појма о његовим идеологијама и ставовима, који мислим да би ми само сметали приликом читања, какви год да су. Нисам примијетио неку велику необјективност приликом описа оног најпипавијег периода, знамо сви већ којег. Аутор отворено говори о разним српским злочинима, али се не устручава да поткачи и друге стране, због чега претпостављам да није неки од оних махнитих другосрбијанских аутошовиниста.

Моја главна замјерка иде на рачун прилично честих момената у којима аутор опуштено успутно спомене неко име или догађај који раније спомињао, подразумијевајући да је то нешто свима познато. Не негирам да би то ТРЕБАЛО да је свима познато, али друже, неки од нас су управо и узели ову књигу у руке да би се информисали о неким стварима које су на своју срамоту пропустили на часовима историје.

Још једаред да нагласим на крају, да оцјењујем као претходне описане књиге, ова би вјероватно добила још једну звјездицу, али ето баш она је имала несрећу да буде пионир новог, са Гудридсовим упутствима усклађеног, оцјењивања.

I haven't been interested in history of Balkans in general and Serbian history before. This book provided me with many interesting information, in my point of view of course. This book is almost short, of course, it can only set fire on interest for further learning.

A solid five-star rating. The author managed to deliver all the requisite facts in a clear-cut manner and that was exactly what I had been looking for all along. The English translation, although slightly faulty at times, did not hamper the reading process.

Just finished the book!

The book comprises many different texts regarding the history of Serbia and the Serbian people starting from medieval times to the relatively relevant internal politics of Serbia today. Since the book was gifted to me by a close friend of mine, I gave utmost importance to the events that happened in the book although admittedly I didn't quite enjoy reading about the events that happened at the end of the 19th century before the Great War. The historical figures and the rival dynasties Obrenovic and Karadordevic and their affinities were explained rather complex, leading me to boredom.

The book starts to be captivating again with the part explaining the assassination of the Austrian Archduke and the events that happen during the First World War. Also, the impact of the Second World War inside Serbia is depicted in a detailed and clear manner. Since being a descendent from a Yugoslavian immigrant family from Serbia to Turkey in the 50s, I also learned a lot about the raging civil war in the region of Raska(Sandzak) during the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia with different factions fighting with each other.

Even though it might be considered biased by people of different ethnicity, I really found the book quite objective when it comes to explaining some contentious topics such as the war crimes committed by the different sides. The author basically depicts the tendencies in a factual way.

I really enjoyed reading the book though it was boring from time to time.
it deserves 3.5-4.0/5.0 at least.

It is the least useful book I’ve ever read. There are lots of dates, names, political parties and references to documents without any real context. A dizzying amount of jumping back and forth across the timeline, especially in the 19th century that did nothing to improve my understanding of Serbia. Also, the final chapters of the book felt very rushed.

A book good enough for somebody who is not familiar with the history of Serbia, written in a simple language. However it fails to give deep insights about the important parts of the Serbian history and sometimes it feels like you are reading a wikipedia article. However, I absolutely recommend it as a first book about the Serbian history.

i bought this in belgrade and its surprisingly easy to read. It didn't take me very long to finish and it really provides a nice concise history of serbia all the way back. my only problem with it is it seems a tad bit biased especially regarding politics and ww1. this is understandable though. it's not distracting and honestly I'm just trying to learn a bit more about serbia after being there and this book gets the job done.
