Keezhedathu Damodaran (25 February 1912 – 3 July 1976) was an Indian Marxist theoretician, writer and one of the leaders of the Communist Party of India in Kerala, India.
This book was written in the 1970s. It is an overview of Indian thought from the earliest times to the present day from a Marxists perspective. This books is quite impressive in its scope. The writing is engaging. When this book was written, Marxist-thought enjoyed a hegemonic status in India's intellectual environment. 50 years later, Marxism commands no respect within India's intellectual arena. Although , it is written from a materialist perspective, it does not detract from the value of the book. Reading it 50 years later, I'm struck by the fact that Damodaran has almost nothing to say about Ambedka who is now perhaps the most influential thinker in India today.
