Dallas William Mayr, better known by his pen name Jack Ketchum, was an American horror fiction author. He was the recipient of four Bram Stoker Awards and three further nominations. His novels included Off Season, Offspring, and Red, which were adapted to film. In 2011, Ketchum received the World Horror Convention Grand Master Award for outstanding contribution to the horror genre.

A onetime actor, teacher, literary agent, lumber salesman, and soda jerk, Ketchum credited his childhood love of Elvis Presley, dinosaurs, and horror for getting him through his formative years. He began making up stories at a young age and explained that he spent much time in his room, or in the woods near his house, down by the brook: "[m]y interests [were] books, comics, movies, rock 'n roll, show tunes, TV, dinosaurs [...] pretty much any activity that didn't demand too much socializing, or where I could easily walk away from socializing." He would make up stories using his plastic soldiers, knights, and dinosaurs as the characters.

Later, in his teen years, Ketchum was befriended by Robert Bloch, author of Psycho, who became his mentor.

Ketchum worked many different jobs before completing his first novel (1980's controversial Off Season), including acting as agent for novelist Henry Miller at Scott Meredith Literary Agency.

His decision to eventually concentrate on novel writing was partly fueled by a preference for work that offered stability and longevity.

Ketchum died of cancer on January 24, 2018, in New York City at the age of 71.

This was a very good book by Jack Kechum. The story starts off slowly and it feels like a good drama rather than a horror or even a mystery until the 2nd half of the book. This is where the suspense really begins and and the tingles start creeping up on you(me). The book is very well written and has a nice and easy flow to it until the suspense falls in place and then many tense and scary moments.
I found this story well balanced and it was an emotional read as well. The writer really gave great descriptions of all the characters and the town and by the end of the book, almost all my questions were answered.
I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to readers who enjoy a very good story along with being a horror story. I given this book 4🌟🌟🌟🌟stars!!

This hardcove is one of 1000 copies printed and is signed by Jack Ketchum.

"Hide and Seek" takes place during the crazy days of summer in the Maine coast town of Dead River, the book divides into two parts.

In the first part, the narrator, local guy Dan, meets some visiting college kids Casey, Kim and Steven. They do some drinking and goofing around together. Dan hqappens to fall for the good looking and wild child Casey. As fate wold have it, they manage to have sex in a graveyard, and Dan learns what motivates her to take risks. It seems that years ago she was sexually abused by her father, abuse that led to the death of her younger brother.

The second part provides the payoff to that meandering yet fun filled setup. In it, the quartet agrees to play hide-and-seek in a local haunted house. The game by turns gets frightening, then deadly, as the four encounter the house's horrid inhabitants.

The book is not as wild and crazy as some other Ketchum books, but is well written.

Ketchum transforms his passion for an independent, self-destructive woman (explicitly depicted and analyzed in a personal narrative postscript) into an interesting little tale about the fate of the Girl with Death in Her Eyes and the poor sap who loves her. the first three-quarters of the novel efficiently and expertly details the small-town, dead-end life of the sympathetic young narrator as he widens his horizons, courtesy of a few sometimes-tragic, always-swingin' rich kids enjoying their summer holiday. the writing is strong, poetic, very clear, very straightforward.

then in the end, things get dark. quite dark! which will only surprise those readers unfamiliar with Ketchum's novels. the final quarter is pure bad-house-with-a-bad-history horror, a quick descent from eerie to genuinely scary and then into bloodily, viscerally graphic. the sudden move from elegiac, erotic coming-of-age tale into stomach-turning grotesquerie worked perfectly for me but would doubtless prove upsetting to many.

a minor work but often surprisingly powerful. Ketchum is a ghettoized but not-exactly unsung author; this novel proves that he has the skills to pay the bills if he ever chose to work outside of horror. but why should he? he's a modern classic and a leader in the genre.

Ketchum's only horror novel with supernatural aspects, She Wakes, reads more like a love letter to the Greek islands than something scary. Our main protagonist, Jordan Chase, is a psychic of some sort and at times feels 'compelled' to go certain places; in this case, a Greek island with a historic tomb. Jordan lives in NYC, has made several millions from various businesses, but when the 'call' hits him, he takes off for Athens like a rocket. Meanwhile, Ketchum introduces a variety of tourists in Greece, including the mysterious Lelia, who starts off the novel robbing her hotel mate and leaving her tied to the bed...

She Wakes clearly ties into Greek Mythos, but just what aspect of that takes some time to develop. As we follow the adventures of the tourists (from various nationalities) from island to island, things start to become clearer. The first half of the novel developed the characters via dialogue and multiple POVs, including various romances and so forth. We also follow Jordan Chase as he tries to figure out what exactly he is being compelled to do. You know the tourists and Jordan will meet up somewhere, but for what?

This definitely had its moments for sure, but the denouement left me shaking my head a little. I was never clear on what Lelia was beyond some manifestation of Artemis and what her goals were exactly. Nonetheless, a decent read by Ketchum whose other works I have really enjoyed. Recommended for Ketchum completists. 3 stars!

This was a very intriguing read for me. The story revolved around four college age friends of different backgrounds who came together for the summer and three of the four were bored with their vacation and yearned for some new experiences and this is where the games came in to play.
The story slowly unfolds as a very good drama that I forgot this was a horror book. The suspense really starts to pick up at the last 25 percent of the story and it did not disappoint.
This is a very well-written book and I really enjoyed the flawed characters who made the story realistic and relatable to that time in all of lives where we may have made some poor choices when faced with peer pressure or good old fashioned boredom.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good storyline and have given a rating of 4 Hiding and Seeking 🌟🌟🌟🌟 stars!!

Great book!

I love Ketchum’s stories and this one does not disappoint. Starts like a spooky ghost story told by teens in a sleepy vacation town, and ends up a horrifying tale. I always love a good horror story, so this is highly recommended by me!

Hide And Seek's main strength lies in the fact that it resembles a story you might have heard in real life. Not so much the second half but certainly the first. The chemistry between the main character and the rich girl on vacation is not only powerfully realistic, but also terribly charming in a way that it will seem familiar to most readers. The real problem with this novel is the twist.

The twist is so predictable, it's unpredictable. Personally, I had ruled out the possibility and was expecting something that had to do with Casey, which would be far more climactic than what actually happened and much better in my opinion. The way Ketchum handled it, I was dissapointed and, frankly, I found the author's afterword better than the book as a whole.

Two stars because the love story was greatly executed and left me with a bittersweet taste, but the "horror" part of the novel was rather weak.

Four stars for the story. Five for the author's afterword which was mind-blowingly similar to a personal experience.

I'm going with the full five stars based on that alone. Ketchum consistently has an emotional impact on me but this was the creepiest one yet. I think Jack and I dated the same girl. Different time, different place, different name - but I'm still pretty sure it was the same girl.

The first 90% was a great Ketchum story; as I expect it should be. The last 10% floored my ass. It was like reading my own biography. Freaked me right the fuck out.

Read it.

Waaaaay back in the early 80's, Stephen King pronounced: "Who's the scariest guy in America? Probably Jack Ketchum." It was, to say the very least, a generous compliment that drew attention to a relatively unknown entity in horror publishing. Even to this day, Ketchum remains on the margins of an already ghettoized genre. He doesn't publish lots, and what he does produce tends to be graphic, propulsive stories filled with violence, sex, and grim outcomes.

He is most notoriously known amongst horror fans for his The Girl Next Door and Off Season. Neither are fit for the faint of heart, but it was the latter -- Ketchum's debut -- which a panicked, censorious publisher cut to pieces in 1980. It would be almost 20 years before an unexpurgated version was made available.

When Ketchum is writing at his absolute best, I would be hard pressed to think of anyone scarier. His prose is sharp and tight; he doesn't waste words and he will use them to haunt you and hurt you. His book of short stories Peaceable Kingdom contains some of the best writing I have read by anybody (and received the 2003 Bram Stoker Award for Best Fiction Collection).

This early novel (1984) is not Ketchum writing at his best but there is still a lot to recommend it. It's a coming-of-age horror story, set in a small town. It features an abandoned house with a gruesome history and a beautiful fucked up girl with a gruesome history of her own. Ketchum sets up the tension and the dread perfectly. You know something bad is going to happen, really bad, but with no idea exactly what (and the not knowing is always the best part). The climax is graphically realized and electric (if a little derivative).

As an audiobook, the novel excels. The reader has a deep baritone voice that whispers at the exact right moments to provide the desired shivery effect.

I really enjoyed this read in which the tension builds slowly then boils over in a perfectly plausible finale.

A group of rich college kids arrive in town and adopt a local lumber worker into their group.

Introduce a house with an interesting history, a little holiday boredom that needs relieving, a local legend or two, a little liquor and you have an electric mix.......one that can easily turn deadly....

I will be seeking more of Jack Ketchum's work.

Playing hide and seek in a creaky, old, rundown house with an ominous history. What can go wrong? A summer of love slowly transforming into a season of fear. Or, as Dan says, a terrible time to find out how good life can be. Happiness in the midst of terror. Ketchum takes his time blowing life into his characters, and succeeds, then puts them through the bloody wringer, and succeeds at that too. Heart, soul and horror.

Hmm. Not sure about this one. I saw another review that said this book should have been a novella. I agree with that. I liked the last 25% of the book way more than the rest. Because that's when stuff finally happened lol. It's clear Ketchum is a good writer, but this was a bit boring and I couldn't stand Casey/how she was written.

As far as I know this is Ketchum's only venture into a supernatural horror, it's very good still, though.

That was my old review of the book. Today I've reread it. Tastes change, mature, evolve. Mine seems to be drifting away from horror slowly but surely and never has it been more evident than reading She Wakes today. This is the book I remember liking, this is the author I've always been a fan of...and yet the story didn't interest me almost at all. Mind you, Ketchum is a very solid writer and all he writes is immensely readable, but this one, his foray into supernatural, was just so over the top with action and sex and under the top with character development and engagement. Greece setting is quite prophetic in the current political and socioeconomic climate, eerily so considering how old the book is. You get what Ketchum's going for here thematically, it sort of makes sense in the way that just didn't interest me as a reader at all. From what I've read and remember of him, he's a much stronger, much more visceral of a storyteller, which is even evident in the rewritten and thus more recent epilogue. Human kind of evil is what Ketchum does so well, this seems like a sort of misfire, a less mature work, maybe an effort to fit in with the rest of genre clichés. It's weirdly not crappy enough to pass for a mindless tripe and not quite strong enough to rise above it. Anthropologically it might hold some interest, just to see how he developed as an author, as a reading experience the nicest thing about the book is its brevity. With Ketchum's customary succinct precise sentences and small to tiny chapters, it only takes a few hours. To paraphrase the well known axiom...sometimes you can't go Ketchum again. Live and learn.

A tutaj lato, wakacje i pierwsza miłość!

Sama traktuję „Zabawę w chowanego” jako wstęp do cyklu o kanibalach, bo to takie swoiste preludium, letni sen, sezon w pełni i lato nad morzem w Maine.

In any other hands this could have easily been a fairly trite story of some kids (well nearly adults, nearly 21) going to a scary house on a dare. In Ketchum's ever so capable hands this became a moving dynamic captivating story with strong well developed characters and very tight pacing. Excellent character study, a story of first love even. The reading experience was all the more enhanced for its afterword, Ketchum's biographical story on his own first love that inspired the book. There is an incredible emotional honesty to Ketchum's writing and this book is a fine example of that. Published as a thriller, there is plenty here for horror fans as well, particularly those who like to get to know the characters before the story rips them to shreds. Very quick read, about 2.5 hours and well worth the time. Recommended.

Ketchum, not one to delve into supernatural too often, goes way out there with a plot that’s as unique as it is odd. The story itself was intriguing, with a multitude of bizarre circumstances and horrid tortures. The ending is a mixture of supernatural elements, old world mythology, ancient battles of good and evil, and the ultimate, get down and dirty, brawl. Even though this book excels in its theme and story, it never gets past the ‘mediocre’ line. It held my interest enough to keep me reading, but my blood never hearted up to the point of perfect bliss either. It’s hard to place a finger on the exact soft spots, but basically the story is a bit lengthy for its kind (even though it’s not a large book to begin with), and could have been wrapped up quicker in a more entertaining manner. The pace keeps up at a rapid pace, so it can’t be faulted, it’s just that the traditional twists of ‘Lelia’ get old quick. New scenarios would have helped, and I didn’t care as much about some of the characters as I should have, causing me to grow impatient with their scenes.

The characters are convincing and enjoyable on different levels, and I enjoyed being able to see through the POVs of each of them. However, Jordan grew thin as his scenes were more boring than anything else. Every one else worked; I can’t find much fault here with Ketchum’s characterization.

Here is an area Ketchum truly shines. The world he paints of Greece is both tragic and appealing at the same time. He truly captures the spirit of the land, while causing it to appear almost alien with the terror that takes place there.

It doesn’t take long to get the story boiling, and by the end of the novel, the water in the fiction pot runs over. While I hold no qualms with the pacing, it just never raised the hairs on my head like I expected it to.

Ketchum uses a multiple point of view, writing short and sweet, filling the pages with a well-done style and obvious enthusiasm.

Overall She Wakes was a decent read, even though at times my interest didn’t stay. Perhaps it was the subject matter, perhaps it was the execution, but whatever it was, the end result is something that’s enjoyed but not too memorable. I have heard excellent things about Ketchum and will eagerly give him another chance; however, I have to admit I was a trifle bit disappointed with the one after all the consistent hype. I will say one thing for sure, and that is that no one exaggerated the brutality of his work, how far out he went with slayings and horrid imagery, not censoring his work.
