It's the time of the Inquisition. Lorcan is seven years old, and he has a Talent. He has been on the run for as long as he can remember, and the whole world seems to be on fire...
Lisa Hofmann is a European-based author of dark fairytale fantasy novels and short stories for adults.
She was born in 1975 and educated in Germany and Ireland. She has worked as an interpreter and as a translator for non-fiction books in her specialized field of education. Later, she went on to become a teacher.
Her books' settings are often similar to or based on historical places near her home town, where she lives with her husband, three children and a houseful of pets.
Lorcan wakes in the middle of the night to witness a nearby fire. He soon is in fear for his life as men arrive at his doorstep searching for members of a race called Cine. They are ostracized and hunted for their talents which set them apart from humans. Though the story was short, it whets the appetite to learn more about this world.
This is an eerie little tale following a family of 'unnaturals' as they evade capture. They've already been through so much, and with more heartache to come. To me, the story resembles how the Jews hid and were terrified of the Nazis...but this has magic in it.
I enjoyed the story and it is a spinoff or part of a bigger story (it's not clear from the intro) as the ending leaves too many questions. I would recommend this author as her writing style is captivating and I'll be adding a few books to my to-read list.
A tale as old as time, ethnic cleansing is not a new concept and yet it is still a deranged practice that still to this day continues.
This book approaches the subject, by addressing two species, Human and the Cine. The Cine are hunted purely for being different. This short story focuses on a family desperate to escape their unfair fate.
Immediately engaged, and the tension was palpable. The character of Lorcan is excellent. I was left with questions and a desire to know more. What next?
