The magnificent land of Oz, a land of mysticism and wonderment.
Decades ago the world learned the infamous story of Dorothy Gale and her adventures in Oz. The world read in anticipation of her fight against the wicked and fell in love with the friends she made along the way.
Dorothy is no longer that same little girl from Kansas. The innocence of her childhood is gone, and her most dangerous adventures in Oz are only just beginning. What should have been the picture perfect fairy tale ending is turning into a bloody nightmare as Dorothy fights to understand who she can trust and does whatever she can in order to save her beloved Oz.
Since John was a kid, his favorite movie has always been The Wizard of Oz. As he got older, he and his brother developed an affinity for the horror film genre, always looking for the next great thriller. Knowing of his love for both horror and Oz, John was introduced by his friend, Nicole Delgado, to the Dorothy Must Die series by Danielle Paige, a dark Oz thriller he found absolutely amazing. After reading through the series, and intrigued by the backstory and characters used from the original stories, John went on to read the original fourteen books in the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. After noticing his increased interest in everything Oz related, Nicole, having already published a book, posed an unexpected question. If you could write a book, what would it be about? One immediate idea came to mind: John’s own dark and twisted version of the Wizard of Oz.
John has always enjoyed a good storyline filled with plot twists and surprises. Following in the footsteps of some of his favorite movies, shows, and video games, John was inspired to create a story that would also keep within his idea of a perfect horror story: something dark, twisted, and completely unexpected. And as a fan of the villains from the Batman and Spiderman comics, John knew his story needed a villain that would keep the story interesting.
With the twisted story ready to be written, John and Nicole began collaboration to on their first book in a whole new dark Oz series. Out of respect for the original series, and being a huge proponent of keeping true to the originals, John created his ideal story, Oz Will Fall: The Royal Marriage. But as much as he stayed true the original, that didn’t stop him from breaking from the classics to bring is own dark aspects to the story every chance he could. After all, what fun is it to create the ultimate villain if you can’t break a few rules?
Oz Will Fall: The Royal Marriage, written by authors John Malone and Nicole Delgado is a wonderfully imaginative but fantastical story which follows on from the well-renowned classics by Frank Baum. The book initially caught my attention because of my childhood love of the Wizard of Oz, however I was pleasantly surprised as I read this story, as it takes the original themes and some of the characters we know and love, and twists them, giving the colourful land of Oz more of a darker edge – such as a red brick road and new characters that bring the story to life. The story will certainly appeal to those who love a good fantasy, as well as those who want to read a different and progressed version of the classic story.
What will really appeal to fantasy lovers, is the way the authors, John Malone and Nicole Delgado introduce new concepts and themes that we hadn’t really seen or read before in the classic, whilst keeping true to the original themes and characters as well. Oz Will Fall: The Royal Marriage is certainly a different take but what readers will love is that it brings the original classic into a new age. The entire story modernizes the adventure fantasy with more intense romance, tension and enchantment that will keep readers turning pages, hooked until the very end. The book is written in first person format, each chapter taking various characters, and at first, I wasn’t sure this would work. However, as a reader this style drew me in to the story, taking me into each character’s mindset, and ultimately helped engage me further into the story. I congratulate the authors on a great story and recommend this book with all five stars!
I gave it three stars, but I wasn't completely convinced that was a valid review. This book is the first of a trilogy, and its purpose was to really set the stage for what is to come. It was full of character development, motives, and background information that seemed to all foreshadow a more eventful plot thickening to come. I am by no means saying this is a read to avoid, more so indicating that it should be read with the intention to finish the series and put all the pieces together. I admittedly have not read the original Wizard of Oz, though have see the original movie countless times. If I had to do it over again, I would have read the original prior to commencing with any spin off.
While I enjoyed the read I do warn those who hold the Oz stories as sacred. This book turns what you expect of Oz on its head. Characters you thought were good are not, and some grisly deaths for some classic characters. I will read through the next 2 books to at least see how this all wraps up.
A little dark in spots but so were the original Baum books. I expected things to end differently than they did Great job of integrating the Oz characters from the original books .
Oz will fall was a great read! It has everything; romance, magic thrill and intrigue! It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire read and left me wanting more! I can't wait for the next book in this series. If you love the story of Oz, you will love this book!
This book has introduced me to a whole new world of OZ. Dorothy is no longer in Kansas and the OZ we knew and loved. John & Nicole created a new character that took their story in a darker and different direction, "on a red brick road". The last 10 chapters, could not put the book down. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! I would highly recommend this book!
Not being too familiar with the entirety of the Oz series, I was lost a few times during my read. However, the book was a great read and held my interest so much that I finished my read in a short period of time. I woukd recommend this to anyone interested in fantasy writings especially similar to Oz and incorporating magic. I am looking forward to more of these books to read in the near future!
