We learn what the secret was that was being alluded to in the previous volume, and see Yato's childhood with his psycho father.

I think I've mentioned the high quality of the notes in this series previously, but I have to share this one (although not in full, because I'm too lazy to copy it all):
In modern times, this poem is most frequently seen on the pictures of the Seven Gods of Fortune's treasure ship that people place under their pillows on New Year's Eve to invite good dreams. In Japanese, the poem is also a palindrome [...] like any good Japanese poem worth its salt, it is packed with wordplay and multiple meanings. The Japanese poem reads as follows:
Nakaki yo na
Toono nefuri no
Mina mesame
Naminori fune no
Oto no yaki kana
The first thing worth noting for purposes of Noragami is that any time the syllable na shows up, it could mean 'name.' 'Nakaki yo' could mean 'long night,' 'long period of time,' or 'I, the writer of names.

I learned more about Japanese poetry, language, and translation from this footnote in a teen maga than I learned from the entire book Ariake.

Then she gives two separate version of how the poem could be translated in very different ways:

From a distant sleep,
through the long expanse of night,
all open your eyes.
The rich vessel 'pon the waves,
how pleasing its silent sound.

OR

I, writer of names,
Call to those brandishing *sound:
Hon'rable names, wake.
Soundless names have come to fruit.
How pleasing these instruments.

*Keep in mind that 'sound' also refers to a shinki's instrument name.

See that?! There is even an aside footnote inside the endnotes! Way to care about clarifying meaning, author(s).

The best moment
Yukine: where were you while I was attacked by Nora? Why didn’t you come help me?
Yato: I was... flirting with Hiyori...
Yukine: I AM GOING TO KILL YOU

Hiyori wants to know what the gods' secret is. Yukine, after being baited by Hiiro, also wants to know what this secret is.

Thus enters Yato's backstory, and what a story it is, heart-wrenching the entire time, cementing how awful Yato's "father" is, how desperate and hopeless Yato's situation is to want to be a god that brings humans happiness instead of being a god of depravity. The gods' secret is at last revealed, and it serves to show how vulnerable Yukine is, and consequently, how vulnerable Yato is, to the machinations of Hiiro and "father." I want to see Yato free of "father," but is that possible? I can't wait to read the next volume. Highly recommended.

As one could probably tell by the cover, this has a TON of backstory. It’s a little disconcerting how much backstory was included. Most of the time we get just a few pages, but not this time around.

Because of the length and story in the backstory, it began to drag. Noragami before this volume was really good at pacing and keeping the reader’s interest.

It was fairly interesting but some parts of the volume just weren’t my cup of tea.

I feel like Hiyori learning all this info from a dream/ somehow tapping into Yato's memories was pretty convenient, but I kind of liked that we learned it all through a flashback. It was easier and smoother this way. Yato, the demon child, what a cutie! I love the characters that act all carefree, but are hiding a tragic backstory. It makes me want to care for them more.

Uffffff.

4.5 stars.

It's been so long since I've read this series and sooo much happened in this volume. Firstly, I really miss these characters and their dynamics, especially the main three. I wasn't expecting a lot of things that happened in this volume to have happened, or at least have happened so soon. I forgot that the last volume left off with the question of what is the "Gods' secret". I wasn't expecting the answer to be what it was. It's quite horrifying honestly. I also didn't realize that Yato actually saw Yukine's memories, I just thought he felt the pain and sadness that Yukine had... oof I'm scared to learn Yukine's backstory.

I wasn't expecting Yato and his father's meeting to be so... I'm not sure how to describe it. I thought it was be more high stakes and it wasn't casual by any means, but it felt like the tension was still hidden under the surface, not quite out yet... Also the fact that his dad told him he has met and interacted with Hiyori, as well as kissed her, which of course Yato was distressed about... I'm not looking forward to seeing Hiyori and his dad face off now that she knows who he is.

The stand off between Yukine and the Stray was great. I'm so proud that Yukine was able to hold his own. I was expecting Yato to swoop in and save him and the fact that he handle the battle all by himself is a testament to how strong he has become. I'm scared about Yukine meeting Yato's dad face to face, especially since Yato's dad seems determined to take Yukine for himself.

Seeing Yato's backstory... was so fucking sad. I didn't realize that he didn't kill his dad because his father is his lifeline and the only one who remembers him, which is why he's been able to live for so long. I also felt sad seeing him find his own shinki, Sakura, and for her to try and teach him to care about others and do good into the world, only for him to get tricked into saying her real name and accidentally causing her irreversible harm. She's the reason he goes by Yato... She was the first person to try and get him to care about others, instead of killing them for fun. She was the first person he cared for....... I'm sad y'all.

Also, I wonder if the reason Hiyori could enter Yato's dreams was because she was in her ayakashi form... Plus the fact that Sakura's real name is Tamanone and then Yato names his future shinki with -ne ending names..... bruh. Honestly, fuck Yato's dad..

This volume concentrates mostly on Yato, the stray, and their father. The stray is out to get revenge on Yukine by letting him know that the Gods have a secret, by the end of the book we know what that secret is and why they keep it. Plenty of flashbacks to Yato's childhood with the stray and his character develops a lot here now that we know his awful beginnings. Just a few cameos from the other characters. Nothing moves forward with this volume but it's a deep examination which is obviously going to affect the direction of the plot as it continues. It's amazing how much Yato has matured since the beginning of this series!

Damn so the God's Greatest Secret is the shinki's true name... So if Yukine finds out his real name-hopefully he won't, will he lose the name given to him, "Yukine"? But really, I hope this doesn't happen to him. And I feel like Hiyori is gaining too much knowledge of everything, this can put Yato and Yukine in serious danger.
