The Mountain Shifters #3

His Unexpected Omega

Rate this book
Jesse is a sheltered young omega who just wants one last taste of freedom before he settles down as an alpha's mate. As the only omega of breeding age within a pack still healing from an alpha's unthinkable betrayal and the loss of its beloved elder, Jesse finds himself torn between his dreams and his duty to the other Blue River wolves. An ill-planned hunting trip gone awry leaves the young omega lost in the woods only to be rescued by the very wolf who haunts his dreams.

Kenneth is a lone alpha who is more than content with his quiet little farm and isolated life in the No Man's Land between Mountain Ridge territory and the Council packs. After a decade spent in captivity as a prisoner of a brutal war, all he wants is to live out the rest of his days in peace. When he stumbles upon a wounded young omega in the woods, his life of routine and order is turned on its head. Kenneth never imagined love would find its way into his secluded world, never mind an omega destined only for him. Just as he's managed to convince himself that he can give Jesse a better life than the pack that seems to view him as expendable, Kenneth's claim to the omega is threatened by a dangerous scheme and Jesse's own secrets.

The bond between Jesse and Kenneth must be strong enough not only to overcome their painful pasts but unite the Blue River Pack before grief and vengeance can tear it apart from the inside and ignite a war that threatens all the Council lands.

Quick thoughts:

This one couldn't get me like the previous book did. The writing isn't bad, not at all, but there was some serious depth missing. Yes, I am aware the book has barely 80 pages, but still.. Kenneth as a character was interesting enough and had some backstory that added another dimension, but his omega? Sorry, but I couldn't get around to liking him at all. Totally without any experience at first, and just because insta-love hits him right in the face, the omega suddenly turns into the full-on experienced guy, no doubt or insecurities left. Didn't work out for me. Maybe I kept comparing it to the previous book, but this one came out flat and a little bit disappointing.

I loved Jesse and Kenneth, and having read the first two books in the series made me feel like there weren't big holes in my understanding the background of these two. My issue - Oh well, I still enjoyed the book. I think the more of these omega books I read, the more jealous I am of them. ☺

I enjoyed this book in the series, although I think that the second book is still my favorite. I thought that Kenneth and Jesse had great chemistry together although things happen in a short amount of time. I could have used a bit more to the story, either with Kenneth and Jesse's relationship or something as it felt a bit short to me.

I really like how this series continues on from the previous book with new characters, and ones that were just maybe mentioned in the previous book, and introducing us to all the different packs in the area.

The Spirits had seen fit to give him an omega to call his own.

Jesse Fields, 18, an Omega of the Blue River Pack, is going to leave home for the first time, to go on a hunting trip with his brother and two of his friends. A fender-bender with a deer ended for Jesse to wake up in the cabin of hermit Kenneth, an Alpha male.

Kenneth Havers, has been living a contented solitary life in the woods in No Man’s Land for years. When he had gone out that night in search of game and the Spirits had seen fit to send him a pup.

Kenneth & Jesse’s story is told in alternating POV’s between them both. It is fast paced and the Verum Alpha also has a cameo.
There are also some confused Betas stirring some trouble but there is much forgiveness and understanding. Cute story with a HEA for the couple.

Part of the The Mountain Shifters serie that all can be read as standalone:

I'm somewhere between a like and an okay on this one. It seems to be a May-December thing since Jesse is just 18 and Kenneth is said to have gray in his beard and temples (and refers to himself as old). I liked both Jesse and Kenneth, as much as there was to know about them. There was a lot more to Kenneth's story that was begging to be explored but was untouched. There were lots of plot holes. For instance, there are strong dreams that are obviously supposed to be pre-cog but the guys don't seem to realize "hey you're my dream guy" (and some things they included don't match reality). There is a lot about the far-fetched danger plot that makes no sense. And what happened to those howling wolves? On the other hand there were some nice moments between the guys and I guess that's what I liked about it. As a warning, there was a lot of cheesiness at the end. I know, though, that it can be hard to get "touching" just right without falling into sappiness. I really enjoyed the first in this series, really disliked (and didn't finish) the second, and now this one is sort of weak. I have KU so I'll guardedly give another a try and hope that the series fulfills its original promise. Note: you must read the others in the series to have an understanding of the cultural, political, and historical situation.

The breezy tone, hackneyed insta-lust and almost desultory plotting that damaged the second volume beyond salvation are back with a vengeance in this insanely short, vapid, background-less instalment. Not only is the meeting between the leads agenced with yet less finesse than in the previous entries, their chemistry almost entirely stated instead of being shown, let alone described in dynamic fashion, and the impediments to be overcome thinly evoked and then solved beyond the scenes or forgotten; things progress at such an insane pace that the few and far between psychological traits given to the two protagonists in the beginning are wantonly disregarded for the sake of what little plot there is instead of the author bothering to seek a creative escape route (the Omega lead thus evolves from virgin to quasi sex counsellor in a matter of pages!). The plodding writing and bad copy-editing put the final nail in the coffin of this pitiful novelette. I only read it because I was afraid of missing something vital for the overarching intrigue of the series when I eventually reach the few books whose blurb appeals to me.

3,5*

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:
A 3,5* is clicked with a 4* but in review marked as 3,5*:

5* - very very good and rare (it would be a Blow-Away-book like ‘Jesse's Smile’ or ‘Joey’ from Angelique Jurd, ‘Save the the kids’ series
from EM Leya, ‘Love’s Tethered Heart’ from C.L. Etta or ‘Liberty’ from Seth King),
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often reread and is a WOW-book with interesting plot and surprises (like most of Andrew Grey books and Davidson Kings 'Haven Hart'-series)
it's like an A

3,5* - a really good book, which will be reread a few times (most romances where you can enjoy for relaxing and during waiting times in
hospitals). I can recommend them definitively!
It's like an B+

3* - it could be more then a one-time-reader (2-3 times a year),
it's like a B

2* - it was ok to read, but it's more a one-time-reader (I wouldn't recommend it heartily, but it was ok)
It's like a C-, D

1* - sorry, but that isn't really a book for me (too many mistakes, not nice plot, illogical, so an absolute NO-GO). It's like failure in the
whole line, dismissed, repeat the class

The story is about Jesse and Kenneth. Jesse is the omega of the Blue River pack, which in the first book got attack by the now dead Alpha and some mercenaries from the Mountain Ridge pack as well. Jesse beg his older brother to go on a hunt before his first heat hit and is force to mate an Alpha that will be the new Alpha of the pack. However, a accident happen and Jesse is found in the cold and injure by Kenneth. Kenneth is a rogue Alpha that live in no man land that is in the boarder between Blue River and Mountain Ridge ever since he lost his pack from Mitchell father and does not want to serve as Mitchell Alpha but will keep the peace between the boarder. When he saw Jesse he was drawn to him and can't help but want to help him but does not want to go any father then that. However, that is not a option, with Jesse heat close to coming and a plot that my start a war if not stop will leave both Jesse and Kenneth deciding will they fight this together or go there separate way.

The characters in this one were much more likable than in the previous one.

Jesse is a young omega from the Blue River pack, three years after Noel's betrayal, the pack still haven't replace the alpha.

After a hunting accident in the wood, he is saved by Kenneth, a older alpha who was a prisoner of war by the Mountain Ridge pack late alpha. Those two share a fast connection (I am not sure about the timeline by it was a little bit rushed) and when Jesse fall into ''need'' (usually it heat in other A/B/O books), they bound to keep the others away.

Kenneth is not aware that Jessie is the alpha's son and the one who will mate with him will take the alpha's place. Jessie get kidnap but there is not much consequences to this.

It was short, quite sweet and have a happy ending, also the MPREG part doesn't take too much place in this story.

This totally hit my favorite trope of age gap romance, and my new love alpha/omega romance. Jesse is his pack's omega, but he doesn't feel worthy. He has dreams of finding something or someone, but as an omega he is not allowed to travel anywhere, and certainly not by himself. When his brother agrees to take him out for hunting, he is ecstatic. Unfortunately there is an accident and he is saved by a gruff, older loner, Kenneth, who is an alpha. Liked the romance, but the background story was given short shrift, and I felt like I needed those details. I will admit that having not read the series in order, I might be missing some details from the previous books, but I have read book 5 in the series and that didn't seem to lack important details as much as this one did.

Another lovely read except...

Another wonderful read. I love it when brooding heroes meet the light of their lives. The story moved really fast and there were some mental gymnastics I had to do but overall it was a nice addition to the series. My only main issue with this book is the editing. While there have been editing mistakes in all three books they haven’t, until this book, interfered with my enjoyment of the story. This book on the other hand was a minefield if grammatical errors, misspelled words and weird words in weird places. Please keep this in mind if you decide to read this book. It is good, there are just some errors that for me were distracting.

Injured after a stupid stunt by members of his pack, young omega Jesse wakes up in Kenneth's cabin. Kenneth is an older alpha who lives deep in the forest with his animals, alone after his pack was destroyed many years ago.

Behold, one cabin cut off from the world by snow, one bed, and a tasty age gap. Apart from finding out what happened to the Blue River pack after their murderous alpha was killed in His Unclaimed Omega, there isn't much in this short story.

The whole series so far is great. Characters are a little soft but you get to know them.

The background on Kenneth could have been the beginning with him going to jail and what his emotional state at that time was then spending ten years there. Then move on to the betrayal at Jessie s pack how the pack had survived as a pack and not been destroyed like Kennths had been. This would have given more insight into the characters emotional Alexa states.
However, with that being said it was still a good book.

So confused

I feel like this book wasn't written for the same series or something. There are all of these things that are different. Like maybe the author worked on another book or two between the previous one in the series and this one and forgot how they'd set up everything. Or someone else wrote this book and didn't pay attention to the world building. Whatever. It was confusing and now I'm annoyed because I really thought the previous book was well written.

This book was so short! From my recollection neither of the main characters were mentioned in the prior books so I'm shocked the author didn't expand more on their story or background. The story was so short it was forgettable; almost like a filler just to get to the next book/story. Not as good as the prior two books.

That is if you want to get a feel for this book. I like both the storyline and the characters in this book. This is a great book for people who are feeling lonely.

Ok I guess

The story is okay but a bit of a retread of the original. There is a reason these characters have never been brought up again

Sweet

Jessie and Kenneth were very sweet. While Rand was misguided and could have hurt his brother it all worked out.

The whole series is enjoyable and entertaining. But note that it has spelling errors, wrong words used and wrong characters names used at times.
