While the day belongs to humans, the night belongs to yokai, supernatural creatures that thrive on human fear. Caught between these worlds is Rikuo Nura. He's three-quarters human, but his grandfather is none other than Nurarihyon, the supreme commander of the Nura clan, a powerful yokai consortium. So, Rikuo is an ordinary teenager three quarters of the time, until his yokai blood awakens. Then Rikuo transforms into the future leader of the Nura clan, leading a hundred demons.

RIKUO'S DECLARATION

Rikuo takes action to cement himself as the Third Heir to the Nura clan as Nurarihyon prepares to officially hand the mantle of power over to him. The political move will change the landscape of the yokai power structure, and could grant Rikuo’s friends higher positions than they ever dreamed! But new responsibility brings new problems and breeds new discontent.

"Begitu pedih lagi menyakitkan"

This review will briefly cover my thoughts on the past six volumes, which encompasses the rest of the Demon Capital anime material (with a brief aside to OVAs and a new arc). A user on Mercari teased that this arc was a good one for them. I have to agree. The classical influences in this series were quite apparent in the fight scenes. Shiibashi kept the pace lively with plenty of reveals and action that kept my attention drawn to the pages. Nura's maturation has also continued to develop naturally. The parallels teen me made to Moka from Rosario + Vampire continue to blossom! The night forms allow each character to feel more confident in themselves, "awakening" their inner desires. In Nura's case, we've seen this confidence creep into the sense of self not impacted by his yokai blood. As a final battle looms, I'll be curious to see how his abilities continue to develop!

The only minor nitpicks I had with the rest of this arc were some of the potty humor once the dust cleared. The side characters in Nura's Night Parade are also getting more page time in a way that shows their importance to the party and how they've grown with their current leader. At this moment, I'm not sure when I'll get to the second season of the anime, but I'll be ready for it!

I was a giddy last volume with that Rikuo and Tsurara umbrella thing. Lels. I'm gritting my teeth from curiosity on what the next volume brings.

The first half is intense fighting and more backstory. Wow. What a ride. The rest though was a kind of filler and slow...but then that ending!

Well, hot damn, Rikuo is all growed up in Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Vol. 16: Rikuo's Declaration!
description

This is Rikuo like you've not seen him before. No longer the kid who served as everyone's doormat, but now a self-assured, courageous man who is ready and worthy to lead the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons.

At long last, the rebirth of Nue has finally arrived and he is just the kind of evil bastard one would expect him to be. He sacrifices his own mother to the pits of hell without even blinking an eye. I had expected a face-off between him and Tsuchigumo to be of epic proportions, but I was totally wrong. Nue, sadly, gets rid of the mighty Tsuchigumo as if he were just swatting away a fly. Exciting as it is to see his glorious body floating around, it is a bit disappointing that he ran off so quickly. I hope that Rikuo will get to confront him in the next volume.

The resurrected Nue is sort of Hollow Ichigo-esque, but nekkid!

The ending of the last volume, led one to believe that the mysterious girl used by Hagoromo-Gitsune might be Rikuo's sister. In this volume, we learn that the girl is actually Rihan's first wife, Yamabuki-Otome. Unaware of the Fox's curse, she blamed herself for not being able to give Rihan an heir. Abe-no-Seimei and Gorozaemon Sanmoto capitalized on her heartbreak to use her as a pawn in their scheme to take down Nurarihyon.

My favorite part of this volume involves Tsurara's new appointment as protector of Nishikigoi. Her positivity and zeal even win over the natives, the ornery Arawashi family. Her new Night Parade couldn't be more suitable for her. They're all so freakin' sweet it'll just give you a mouthful of cavities.

Go Team Tsurara!
description

The end of the volume begins a new story arc involving the Kirisaki Toryanse's mystery. It is creepy! The darkness reminds me of the volume that had the possessed doll. Rikuo goes to check out the shrine with the gigantic Shoei. Along the path, they find a girl alone crying and when she turns to them, she is faceless! The volume concludes with a new adversary, The Ripper, dropping in on them.

The only reason this volume doesn't get a higher rating is that the action can be quite confusing. Also, the story about Rihan's wife isn't as clear as it could be. Still, this is a fun volume that plants some interesting seeds for future volumes to come. I especially look forward to seeing Team Tsurara in action and to see Rikuo fill his new shoes as the official leader of the Nura clan.

Synopsis:

Rikuo takes action to cement himself as the Third Heir to the Nura clan as Nurarihyon prepares to officially hand the mantle of power over to him. The political move will change the landscape of the yokai power structure, and could grant Rikuo’s friends higher positions than they ever dreamed! But new responsibility brings new problems and breeds new discontent.

My Thoughts:

In this volume, we learn quite a bit. We find out why Hagoromo-Gitsune seemed to have memories of Rihan and Rikuo and why Rikuo saw her kill his father that night. It seems there has been some manipulation from the Underworld for quite some time. Sanotomo is an old enemy of the Nura Clan and he's been pulling strings for quite some time it seems. In the end, Seimei gets away, but his body isn't quite complete. Rikuo and the Nura Clan still have a year to get him before it's all too late.

Four months later, Rikuo has officially been instated as the Third Heir of the Nura Clan and some of his aides like Aotabo, Kurotabo and Tsurara have been made Executives. Tsurara gets put in charge of an area and they got attacked by a tsukumogami. Tsurara managers to defeat it, but it seems that Sanotomo's Hundred Stories Clan is on the move. This can't be good.

Next, Rikuo and Shoei go to investigate a shrine where teenagers get spirited away and it looks like Rikuo is the next to disappear!

This is a great volume story wise and an important one. The Kyoto storyline ends here. We have the birth, major battles and back stories from the past about Rikuo's father. The second half of the book is even better as it takes up a fresh perspective focusing on Tsurara and her exploits as she gathers a team of followers and finally the book ends with the beginning of a new arc featuring an extremely creepy and scary enemy nicknamed "The Ripper". My most favourite book of recent volumes. Fantastic cliffhanging ending!
