4.5. I’ve been hanging on to this bad boy since 2016 when The Last Guardian first came out and my now wife gifted it to me. I set it aside so that I could use it on my second play through and read along as I played, since the format of the book warrants that strategy. Somehow though it took me about 8 years to find my way back to the game, but hey! I finally did it!

Honestly a great book that’s not so much an art book or a guide book, though it does contain both of those things, but is more-so a desperate attempt to squeeze out any sort of concrete interpretations and answers from Ueda and his team (oftentimes unsuccessfully). This is not a game with clear answers but this book pointed out some fascinating details that I failed to notice the first time, and for that I’m grateful.

A beguiling and unusual book for a beguiling and unusual game. As a consequence of its director's creative preferences, The Last Guardian produced little concept art and only six well-defined cut-scenes, so a conventional art book of paintings and storyboards was essentially impossible. Instead the bulk of this volume is filled with screen-shots of the actual sequence of the game, annotated and expanded upon with a wealth of intriguing marginalia. Paging through provides an opportunity to reflect on Guardian's strong sense of mood and very purposeful structure. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the presentation, both the well balanced layouts and the rich printing that accurately reproduces the balance of light, shadow, and colour of the game itself.

This is a gorgeous book that sheds new light on the gorgeous game.

The value of this book is that it gives an insider's view on the direction, decisions, and details that made it into the final game and how they got there. It walks you through the different elements of the game and helps emerse you in the lore as well as attempt to explain the unique way the teams built the game.

Good for video game enthusiasts! Also if after reading through the book and garnering an even greater appreciation for the game you feel like playing it again, it actually also provides a comprehensive secrets guide and advice on how to unlock all of the achievements.
