I have a fascination and appreciation for Olson's work. She has a way of taking the darkest of dark and weaving it into a beautiful work of art and this latest addition to her books is nothing short of a masterpiece.
Creep sees someone who has been broken and left for dead return to life in a way that most would detest and see as completely illegal. Yet, if it is full of willing participants and it gives her freedom, is is really evil? We see inside the mind of the master of the show, and it is a puzzle that even the best couldn't crack. She is very kept to herself, not sharing her secrets with even her one true friend. When her past comes to haunt her, in the form of a white mask, we get to see how she deals. She can no longer avoid what happened to her and Olson takes us down the dark and deserted path of confrontation, with our main character, and we see all the details of her world and her past.
I truly felt for everyone in this story. Each character has a reason to be where they are. A reason they have become broken. A reason to be at Visions. Olson had a way of making me see the depth of each of their tales and really analysing just what it might be like to be them and it has a way of helping you understand why they are where they are and wondering if we would be on the same path. I love that her reads are so dark and thought-provoking.
Let's not forget twisted! If you love dark reads that are twisted as fuck, especially if you love Yolanda's version of this 'quirk', then you will not be let down. This book is on a new level of wtf. In such a good way. The pace plays into this as well. It is an odd blend of fast and slow, and switches it up without giving you any notice. The flipping of pace gives it that little extra quirk to really throw you into the main character's headspace, personality and lifestyle.
The level of detail is brilliant. It is not enough to make you gag, but definitely enough to nearly have you smelling the blood of severed heads and promises. I love being able to feel as though I am there and feel this is paramount to any decent horror. Olson does this as though she has mastered the craft.
All I can say is I cannot wait until the second part of Creep arrives. I need to see where this horror fest leads. Definitely a MUST READ!
