The thrill of victory! The agony of a tight jockstrap!
It’s a celebration of true sports lunacy from the renowned connoisseurs of stupidity, Kathryn and Ross Petras, authors of the beloved 365 Stupidest Things Ever Said calendar with over 4.6 million copies in print.
Here from the wide world of professional and amateur sports are the worst plays, most embarrassing achievements, surliest fans, lamest excuses, and wackiest mascot tricks. Plus history-making blowouts: Georgia Tech trounces Cumberland College 222–0. Freakiest injuries: Pitcher Joel Zamaya plays so much Guitar Hero he goes on the DL with tendonitis. Improbable memorabilia: Andre Agassi’s ponytail, Ty Cobb’s dentures. Looniest promotional giveaways: Win a free vasectomy! Bizarre sports from across the globe: Olympic solo synchronized swimming. And dubious superstitions: Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs eats chicken before every game of his 18-year career.
And, of course, quotes. From athletes: “We lost because we didn’t win.” (soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo). Coaches: “We were scoring, they were scoring. Then we stopped scoring and they kept scoring” (Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue). And sportscasters: “Winfield goes back to the wall, he hits his head on the wall and it rolls off! It’s rolling all the way back to second base. This is a terrible thing for the Padres!” (announcer Jerry Coleman).
The book details the weirdest, craziest, and most insane things to happen in the history of sports. There are strange injuries, dumb quotes, and the worst bloopers on the field. There is a whole section devoted to the weird superstitions that players have, from eating the same thing before every game to wearing the same shorts (unwashed). And it's not just limited to pro sports; there are also high school and college stats, as well as international oddities from around the world.
I like how this book is divided into sections, and the information is easy to read in small snippets. It's funny and entertaining! The sarcastic writing style really brings out a lot of the humor and craziness in the subject.
I love the cool drawings and illustrations! There are some funny cartoon drawings that illustrate a joke or fact that really adds to the enjoyment of the book. I also appreciated the design of the book. The chapters have nice designs around them, the text is divided into sections on the page making it easy to follow each bit of information.

You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy reading this book of sports anecdotes. There are expected idiocies, such as accidentally scoring for the other team, acts of bad sportsmanship, cheating or breaking the law and being caught, freak injury accidents, ridiculous public statements, and stupid stunts, and not just by players or teams. There are also crazy things happening in supposedly reputable events such as the Olympics as well. Nothing meaningful, but definitely entertaining if you want some laughs.
I liked this book for what it was: something that sat on my toilet for the six weeks since Christmas and gave a laugh a couple of times a day. I'm not being crass. The little bits and pieces of guffaws in sports history really hit the spot and ended up mildly entertaining.
A little outdated since it was published in 2017 but a fun read none the less. I remember a lot of the more recent stories from my youth but I enjoyed the quotes the most.
Very American with some British mentions, but I am concerned about how many times teams, cities and even participants are not mentioned. Mediocre and very light attempt at a subject.
I'm not quite halfway through this book as it is not a typical book with a storyline, but a multitude of sports trivia type information. This book is good on a commute, doctor's office visit, anytime you need to occupy your time and not worry about where you are in the book, and yes, this includes the bathroom. The information I believe to be valid as I'd heard some of it before, and yes, some of it is stupid, actually a lot of it so be prepared to be entertained.
