There’s trouble in Nova and the citizens of the kingdom must once again put their faith in Samantha Kemi to save the day in the final novel of the “charming and humorous” ( Kirkus Reviews ) Potion Diaries series.

After the royal tour, Samantha Kemi thought she could take a break from saving the day. Her grandfather Ostanes is healthy, she’s about to be named a Master Alchemist, and Princess Evelyn is happily married to Prince Stefan.

Except—Sam has no proof that Evelyn is happily married because she hasn’t seen the princess in days…Prince Stefan is now the public face of the Royal family.

Princess Evelyn has gone MIA just when Nova (and Sam) needs her most. A surge of magic is spreading across the country—like a virus—and every Talented person is suddenly more powerful. With the Talenteds getting stronger, Ordinary people begin to worry about an imbalance in the magic streams—and in society. When a group of Talented kids—Sam’s sister Molly Among them—are attacked with a powerful sleeping potion, Prince Stefan is convinced that the Ordinary people are taking a radical stand against Talenteds and reinstates the old ban on traditional alchemy.

Now Sam’s hands are tied. Does she trust Nova’s scientists to find a synthetic cure to this curse, or does she break Stefan’s royal decree and use her skills to save her little sister—and possibly all of Nova—from a forever sleep?

Unfortunately, Going Viral was not the best addition to this series. I adored The Potion Diaries for its unique premise and colourful cast but this sequel just did not live up to the standard.

Pros:

The world. I love gritty, dark fantasy worlds but there is a special place in my heart for Nova. I adore how it effortlessly blends modern technology and magic/alchemy to create this setting that is somewhat light-hearted and fluffy but maintains that fantastical feel.

The alchemy. If you didn’t know, potion-making - or alchemy/mixing, in this case - is one of my favourite magical systems. There something about balancing the magical lore with science that makes it that much more realistic and believable in my eyes. I will say that I was slightly disappointed that the potion-making was not quite as interesting in this sequel, at least compared to the first two books, but it is still one of my favourite aspect of this series. I just would have liked to see it play more of a role in the story.

The protagonist. I have said this twice now but it is worth repeating: Sam is the kind of protagonist I love to see in these sorts of stories. She is just a genuinely pleasant character. Her ambition is so admirable. Despite her accomplishments and her intelligence, she is never arrogant or obnoxious. She is loyal to her family and her craft. She is nerdy in such a relatable way and I just really adore her. The one thing that I did not enjoy was how she treated Zain. I thought she was a bit snappy at him, especially because he didn’t do anything to deserve it.

The cast. Generally speaking, I do really love these characters. I love Zain and Molly and Sam’s grandfather and Anita. Kirsty - the secondary character I had problems with in the first two books - was also not in this story. Yay!

Cons:

The plot. *dramatic sigh* Without a doubt, the thing that let this sequel down was its plotline. It was just so mild? There was no intensity to it. I don’t know whether it was because it lacked the epic scavenger hunts of the previous two books but, for whatever reason, I found the plot incredibly dry. The was no sense of urgency. Everything felt oddly convenient. All of the answers were provided to them by conveniently timed “coincidences” and I just found it boring. While the potion-making had been a highlight in the previous books, the fact that Sam had the recipe handed to her on a silver platter was… anticlimactic. I should have been excited that we explore a part of the world we hadn’t seen before but, like I said, everything was delivered to Sam and we did very little exploring ourselves. Even the phoenix stuff felt forced.

The romances. I do not think that romance is Alward forte. While I liked all of her characters as individuals, I felt like neither of the two ships in this story had any real chemistry. I think Zain and Sam definitely have potential. Their dynamics are so interesting because they really are an opposites-attract type of couple but I was just so frustrated by how oblivious Sam was to Zain’s feelings that I struggled to feel invested in their relationship. Evelyn and Katrina also felt forced. I love that we have an f/f romance in a world where there is no discrimination about people’s sexualities/gender identities but they had no chemistry!

The villain. Yawn. They were needlessly evil and felt very caricaturish. Their motivations were bland. I felt no real empathy to them. I would have liked to see Prince Stefan have more nuanced character development as well. He was definitely an interesting antagonist but his arc felt rushed and a little bit sloppy.

Evelyn’s POV. I normally adore multiple POV stories - and still do - but I did find Evelyn’s storyline particularly boring. Her voice was also a tad too juvenile for my taste.

Another fantastic installment in The Potion Diaries. I could feel the heat from the volcano and I, too, was craning my neck to get a glimpse of the phoenix. I hope there are more books in this series because it's definitely a niche of the fantasy YA genre (potions mixing!) that is not represented elsewhere. The stories are fast-paced and heartfelt, a stellar combination.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley for review consideration.

The third and final book of the Potion Diaries trilogy starts just where book two left off. Thinking it was her last option, Princess Evelyn married Prince Stefan while Sam was missing. Now Sam realises that Evelyn has contracted the same illness that has affected all of Stefan's family for so long. The race is on once again to find the right potion to help, before all the Royals' magic is drained and Nova is ruined.
Sam is such a great character, she cares so deeply about her friends and family. She goes to any lengths to help them, being brave even when she's terrified. You can feel Sam's urgency throughout.
I loved this just as much as the first two books. Rarely for a series, all three books felt very similar and the quality stayed strong.

Yesterday this book arrived and I just had to read it right away! The first two books had been such nice, light, adventurous and entertaining reads and I was in the mood for a nice, quick and easy book, especially since I've been a little ill the last couple of days. And this book was exactly what I had hoped it would be.

Sam is one of the most amazing characters I know. She's smart, she's confident, she knows what she wants and she just goes for it. Yes, what the world thinks of her does bother her, but it doesn't change her. And yes, she has a boyfriend, but her story and this adventure are not about him or their romance. It's her adventure and her trip and most of all her story. And I really love that.

Of course, the supporting cast is great too. I like that, even though there have been some troubles, there are strong female friendships in this book, there is a strong friendship between a girl and a boy that never has a hint of romance, the good and the bad guys are actually all a little bit of both, which keeps it really interesting and all characters are unique and different. (And I think there is an opening for a Zain spin off and I'd love it!) O, and Evie's point of view was back! How I missed that!

And just like in the previous books, we got to see a new part of the world and met new mythological creatures. It weren't as many as in the previous books, but that's fine. I love that Alward doesn't let her characters just run around for nothing. They have a goal, they go for it and their going around serves that goal and the plot.

Combine all that with a lovely writing style that reads that easy that it almost feels like reading in my mother tongue and it's the perfect book to read on days like this!

First off: Isn't that title wonderful? It's just so apt and fitting, with its double meaning.

Secondly: There are FREAKING PHOENIXES in this book and I fucking love phoenixes so bring it on!

Okay, fine, so this book doesn't actually match the first one either, but it was a good deal better than Book 2. There's some fine character development (looking at you here, Stefan), and a plot twist that you really don't see coming. The story itself also seems more organized, somehow, and has less of the "taken out of nowhere" air that the second book had.

There's much more of Princess Evelyn again, so yay, and Sam is just as awesome as before. I really liked the idea of a camera crew following her for a documentary, too. (And don't worry, it's nothing like Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Believe me, this story is much more interesting (and fucked up, there's that too, I guess).

Anyway, all in all, Book 3 didn't set the bar quite as high as Book 1, but it comes close. It's definitely better than Book 2.

Also, I know now why this book has some, but not everything, of that "Britishness" I talked about in Book 1 - Alward lives partly in Canada and partly in the UK. So hey, that must be it.

Another fun addition to the potion diaries series!

I really enjoyed getting to see more alchemists in this one, and their different ways of working - I really want Sam to go on and revolutionise things in Nova now. And who doesn’t love a Phoenix! There should be more of them in my books ;)

I think the quest for the ingredient was great this time, but I was sad that there wasn’t a lot of intrigue to the recipe. I also thought the villain(s) weren’t as strong as I’d have liked - one is just angry and the other is almost accidental despite being a bad person.

I quite liked Evie and Molly’s storyline, and what they needed to do, I like that they were so strong and brave. And Sam, as always, is a fun and interesting main character. I have to say I didn’t feel the lack of Zain as much though - though I like the resolution he comes to at the end.

I still want to see more - maybe less running around and more time in Nova, trying to change things. Somehow I don’t think that’s where this series will go though, and I do look forward to anything more!

No geral, a trilogia é incrível.
Sim, eu sinto.

I really enjoyed that Sam started to come more into her own as a strong female protagonist and individual. I think what I enjoyed the most though was that the book actually took a step back from being tied up in Sam's relationship. It was really cool to read that progression of her individualizing and not having to rely on a male or think about a male first.

I love this trilogy, it's fun, it's original, the MC is determined and ambitious and easy to root for. This trilogy is my little pick me up when I'm feeling crappy, it brightens my day and always puts a smile on my face. Except for the time I found out that this was the final book and it was actually only a trilogy and not a series....I actually got quite distressed about that, I'm not going to lie! But this is a fantastic ending to the trilogy and I'll forever lowkey hope for another book...or two....

Going Viral has a rather sinister opening with Evelyn and the ever creepy Stefan. I really do not like him, although he manages to redeem himself a little bit in this book. He's such a shady character though. Evie's POV's are pretty sinister for the most part during this book, but as she goes on her own journey, she gets more and more determined and the POV's go from sinister happenings to badass girl power team ups. Evie really brings people together and shows what a fantastic ruler she'll be. Thanks to Evie we get some blanks filled in on when it comes to her and what happened after she parted from Sam in Royal Tour. Evie's just as determined as Sam, and she spends the book pulling herself...and everyone else together, and getting to the bottom of things.

As I started to read, I was like....it's happening. It's finally happening. Sam and Zain are going on an actual date...REMAIN CALM. I will never forgive Stefan for ruining it. But you know...my joy quickly turned to AAAAAAAHHHH because cue the first fight. My ship was a bit rocky this book, I should have seen it coming because it had been smooth sailing (sorry, I love a ship pun) for the entire second book and some tension was to be expected.

That's right. Relationship issues folks, be prepared. Don't get me wrong, it's realistic and authentic and everything, but like...this is the last book and I was freaking out a little bit like..IT'S ALL GOING TO BE FINE BY THE END RIGHT?! RIIIIGHT?! So prepare for a lack of Zain. This book features Sam getting things done, striking out with her friends to save the world. I do like the fact that Alward took this approach, made it clear that Sam can do this huge thing without Zain, that while she may love him, she doesn't need him to be a badass mixer. She can do it. She doesn't need him propping her up. Like so many books end up with the female MC needing the guy to do the thing, or needing the guy to hold her hand while she does the thing. So while I do love Sam and Zain, it was refreshing to see Sam teaming up with her friends, and striking out to do the thing. I have to keep saying 'the thing' because spoilers. But I was like GIRL POWER BITCHES.

We FINALLY get to meet Katrina properly in this book too and I loved it! She's brilliant and I loved her teaming up with Sam, the two ordinary girls saving the world without any Talent. I was cheering a lot, I'm not going to lie. We also get to meet the Gergon royal family. I never did quite decide if I liked Illie. There's a nice dose of Anita and Arjun, who where with Sam back at the beginning of the first book. I love the friendship between the three of them and how they came to help Sam and they all did it together.

Interestingly we get to learn more about Sam's background and where she's from as we visit more of the world of the book. There's some brilliant history and mythology in this book, and the story continuation is perfectly done. Some threads from the first two books weave in to the plot of this book and everything comes together perfectly.

Going Viral continues, and brings to a close, the story perfectly. There's more mythology, more of the world, more of who Sam is and more character growth. The thing with my ship hit me right in the feels at the end, and even mildly distressed me...but it still ends fantastically. I can't imagine a more perfect ending for The Potion Diaries or for Sam. It fits with Sam and with the message Alward is sending out with these books. Sam's such an inspiring character with her ambition and her relatable nerdiness, and Alward shows you with these books that if you're determined, you can do whatever you want to do no matter what.

Going Viral has drama and tension and it goes right to the wire, it's just as much of a wild ride as the previous two books, and the last line was just perfection. I should also mention that Sam and Arjun participate in a bit of extreme Pokemon Go! I'm so sad to see this trilogy end, but there's always re-reads!

As más notícias?

I remember starting the series some years ago, when there were only the first and second book out, but was recently reminded about it and thought it's about time to finish the series. For the teens fiction category I think the series are great - light, adventurous and with a beautiful world that gives you many options to explore in more books. The main characters are lovable and the alchemy is what got me into The Potion Diaries series in the first place. The reason, however, I'm not giving it maximum rate is that at times it felt a bit too easy and convinient in comparison to the previous two books. It is not necessarily a bad thing, after all I did enjoy the book, but I kind of wished there was may be some other twist as well? Or may be something additional happening in the end of the book as well? Or I might just be a bit picky after finishing my previous book series😅 Anyways, the adventures of Samantha Kami continues and I sure will be around, waiting for the 4th book of the series!

In the 3rd and final instalment of the Potion Diaries trilogy, we see our alchemist heroine Sam attempt to save Princess Evelyn from a mysterious virus and her new husband Stefan (who I found a seriously menacing villain). This book felt a lot darker to me than books one and two, somehow and I found it totally gripping as I read the book in a day. Alward builds the tension of the mystery perfectly and expertly lets the reader in on information throughout, and it`s really interesting to read a POV fully aware of the situation and the dangers and one who is totally in the dark (this was nailbiting material for me at points!). This book also continued to be a fabulous blend of contemporary and fantasy, with a wonderful heroine whose strength and determination I really admired. Finally, I loved the side characters, and even though I had predicted something quite different I liked the ending a lot

Firstly, I just want to say that this cover is RIDICULOUSLY beautiful. I loved the style of all the Potion Diaries covers. The colours and style is a perfect combination.

This series continues the story of Sam Kemi, Master Alchemist. I absolutely love Sam as a character, she's so determined to learn and prove the truth about the deadly virus spreading through the world.

All the characters in this novel were effortlessly portrayed and I could see them clearly in my imagination. I have to say the visual image I got of Zhongou and the mountain was super vivid. The adventure Sam and the gang go on throughout this novel was lovely.

I'm not sure if there is going to be another one but honestly, this series is super. Overall, this book was a super easy read, full of good fun and exciting turns. 100& Recommend this book!

Really likes this series and the final book was my favorite! I appreciated going back to Princess Evelyn’s point of view (this occurred in the first book but mot the second), and mostly I really liked seeing her grow as a strong character. I thought I had the mystery figured out on who was the magical drain, but I was pleasantly surprised by an unexpected twist. My only complaint - while I appreciate the author trying to make Samantha independent from Zain, the story line of Zain being threatened by the success and self awareness of a strong female, was a bit tired and I wish had been resolved differently. Overall, I really enjoyed the characters and the world created, and I wish the series would continue!

2⭐
