The Kardashians: An American Drama

Rate this book

Secrets and scandals of the Kardashians, so closely held that not even hard core fans have heard about them, are finally exposed in New York Times bestselling author Jerry Oppenheimer's forensic dissection of the infamous reality TV clan. From the curious life of patriarch Robert Kardashian, whose family meatpacking business was tainted by scandal, to “momager” Kris Jenner’s top-secret plan for the future, The Kardashians reveals the untold, definitive story based on two years of investigative reporting and scores of candid, on-the-record interviews, ranging from childhood friends to powerful business associates, who break their silence for the first time.

In the decade since the Kardashians first appeared on the scene, millions of speculative words have been written about their drama-filled lives. But most has been tabloid hype and gossip column fantasy. Until now.

Oppenheimer has written revelatory books on such international icons as the Clintons, the Kennedys, the Hiltons and more, and now comes the Kardashians, the true story that will make headlines and shock even the most loyal fans.

When you think of the Kardashians, do you think of

A) the original trio (Kim, Khloe, Kourtney)
B) the social media popstars (Kylie, Kendal)
C) their early, early pre-famous lives (Kris).

If you answered A) or B), then you are in for a world of disappointment.

If you chose C), and if you don't mind looking at the Kardashians through a lense of a jealous, teenage ex-boyfriend with vaguely racist undertones, then this one is for you.

The author begins by detailing Kris Kardashian (the matriarch)'s life, emphasizing every poor decision and injecting his own criticism of her personal life choices, her family and her business decisions.

Then we get a somewhat detailed account of the OJ case

Then, he tears into Caitlyn Jenner (previously known as Bruce Jenner, Kris's latest husband) with one of the rudest analysis of her transitions I have read.

And then after all that back story, we finally get to "the Kardashians" - the global phenomenon of Kourtney, Kim, khloe, Kylie and Kendal and their rise to fame...annnnd he ends the book.

What a letdown.

Throughout this novel, the author claims to be writing the history of one of the most popular American families in the last few decades but the way he went about it really rubbed me in the wrong way.

It was the lack of respect.

It's hard for me to enjoy a book when the author so clearly doesn't respect the subjects - going so far as to mock, ridicule and taunt them.

He constantly interjects his petty feelings into every bit of this book and when someone so overtly hates a group of people, how can you trust the "facts" as he presents them?

In addition, he makes racial insinuations regarding the Kardashians' choice in men, slut-shames and constantly (CONSTANTLY) talks about how they have no talent and don't deserve their wealth.

And to that I say, they certainly don't have traditional talent, but I would like to see the author take on the current world of social media and mayhem armed with only a single, grainy sex-tape and a few hours of family-friendly footage from Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Could he turn that around into a multi-million dollar enterprise?

Could he make his last name instantly recognizable across the nation?

Could he seamlessly reach across the fashion, the makeup, the reality TV, the social media markets to keep his entire family employed and wealthy?

Probably not, but he could definitely write a half-assed jealous-rage-word-vomit book about it...

Read by Holter Graham - and he really nailed the pettiness in his tone and inflection.

This book gets the rare and dreaded 1 Star.

I thought I would love this book and I'm extremely disappointed. As you should all know by now I love The Kardashians. Its not a guilty pleasure because I feel no guilt or shame for my love of America's First Family. I've also always enjoyed books by Jerry Oppenheimer, I've read four of them and really enjoyed his writing. So I thought that The Kardashians: An American Drama would hit me right in my sweet spot but unfortunately NOPE!

I was really put off by the racial undertones throughout the book. As I stated in multiple updates the author was obsessed with the Kardashians preference for dating and marrying African Americans. He repeatedly called the Kardashian women trashy and trampy and seemed to equate the fact that they dated black men with proof of that. At first I thought I was maybe just being overly sensitive but as I continued to read and see more and more examples I knew it wasn't me it was the author. At one point towards the end of the book the author seemed confused by as he puts it "The girls have a real thing for romancing giant sized blacks". He also ponders if the girls love for black men is related to their father's friendship with O.J. Simpson. Speaking of The Juice, the author wonders if the rumors of Khloe being fathered by O.J. might be true because of her more harsh African-like facial features. WTF!!

It's obvious Mr. Oppenheimer doesn't care much for the Kardashian family but that didn't brother me I've read his other books and he didn't care for any of them either.(especially Robert Kennedy Jr. y'all should that book its AMAZING!)I also wasn't bothered by his lack of respect for the Kardashian hustle, because alot of people don't respect them for it. I never understand it when people ask what the Kardashians do? They do everything, they model, design clothes, endorse various products, "write" books, and are a global tv empire. When people ask me what do the Kardashians do? I ask them what does Ryan Seacrest do? What does Giselle do?

I'm not recommending this one because of the racial problems I had with it.

A very old school dishy, bitchy "deep background" story of the "Founding Fathers and Mothers" of the Kardashian Clan.
This book was entertaining, the kind of thing you read on a plane and glean like four new facts about celebrities' lives from.
The weird part to me is that the author clearly has so much contempt (and quite frankly, misogyny) towards the whole group that I'm confused why he spent what's likely the better part of a year writing this book (if not more!). If you detest Kim Kardashian and the "Three African American husbands" she married (he finds that remarkable enough to mention more than once using those exact words. Um, hellur, Kris Humphries is mixed race. We don't follow the "one drop rule" in the US any more, Jerry) why did you write a book about her family? Inquiring minds want to know.

To me, (and I could write my own book about this) at this point in the game, if you're hating on the Kardashians, it's sexist. Those women may have started on the bottom rung of fame (leaked bedroom films). They have *actual amazing accomplishments* since then. Fashion lines. Sold out makeup lines. Games and apps. Books. A fashion boutique. A thriving, multi-billion dollar brand and empire. If you "hate" the Kardashians but you have ANY respect for any of the wildcatter billionaires out there or Wall Street bros that made money pushing paper around and ripping off the American public, you're being a jerk. And a hypocrite.

Look, the Kardashians are tacky. They're flashy. They're in your face. We wish they weren't "America's Real First Family". But this is the "krew" that truly represents the American dream: immigrate to this bountiful land, start a biz, get rich, and grab fame by the throat and make it work for you.

And long may it wave. :)

I'm a little ashamed that I actually read this, but I'm really sick and I needed a mindless book to read. This fit the bill perfectly.

This book is as trashy as they come, but the author's absolute hatred for the Kardashians (especially Kris and Kim) is a little weird. I know everyone loves to hate this family, but he took it to another level. I was also extremely uncomfortable with the racial undertones throughout this book, as the author is seemingly obsessed with pointing out if someone is black or not.

I realized immediately how terrible this book was, but it was like some sort of grisly car wreck that I couldn't look away from. If I wasn't so sick I probably would have tossed it to the side (or never checked it out from the library in the first place), but it really did pass the time today and helped me forget how awful I feel, so that's a plus I guess.

I'm no Kardashian apologist. But, I saw this on the shelf and thought it might be interesting to read some backstory on the clan and how they rose up from the beginning. This book obviously delves into that, but it's seemingly written for a very specific audience. Do you hate the Kardashians with a passion (he obviously does, especially Kris). Do you think that Robert was just a poor schmuck who just wanted to dress nice, have famous friends, and be loved? Are you scandalized by interracial relationships? Then this is the book for you. Keep in mind that the author was obviously reaching to meet a word count minimum- you'll notice when he keeps repeating the same information over and over again - information like the names of the Kardashian siblings, which face it - if you're reading this book, you already know what they are.

My mantra is I try to eat healthy but I like a good dose of junk food in a while. Thus my Television watching can go from PBS to reality shows. I watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians and proud of it! LOL! Normally I love Jerry Oppenheimers books they are written with a biting wit. This one was very mean spirited and racist. I don't care for Kris Jenner but Oppemheimer seems to have a real hatred towards her . I am extremely horrified that he would pick on her mom who is suffering from pancreatic cancer. Also he rehashes things that has been said for years.!

Racist author? He's obsessed with interracial dating and discloses the race of people even when it has nothing to do with the context of the story. Like, I'm pretty sure we all know Kanye West is black without the author mentioning it several times. Interesting story, though I can't wrap my head around the fact that this author actually gets paid to put words together to form sentences.

Probably the most honest account of anything approximating truthful and full of integrity. No, the author ain't that. But the facts just might be. Needed something delicious, salacious, sordid, gossipy, full of nitty-gritty details of who they were before they were you know...infamy rules because Kris is truly a shrewd master MASTER manipulator, who very lucratively pimped out her children.

And really, if there was any tragic hero....maybe the patriarch of that family. Would he be turning over, or partying in his grave: big question in this book. Very interesting to understand about Molokan Christianity, as both sides of the Armenian branch practiced it on Robert sr's side, rebels to Orthodoxy. An aside: kourtney looks so much like her paternal great great grandmother, it's really uncanny.

No way...Kardashian was involved with Pat Boone's Vineyard as an elder?! I used to put on repeat Debby Boone songs as a kid.

The matriarch came from Deep South roots. Funny to note that more than 3 generations on the Houghton (mom's maiden) side never went past high school.

I came away from the book better understanding troubled son Rob's anger and psychology, though. Certainly, his anger in large part is truly directed at his mom and everything the Kardashian name now stands for, as opposed to how he interpreted his father's desire for fame.

A murder
And
A sex tape

Made the most famous reality tv personalities of the 20th century. Sociologists, I'm sure, are studying this. American values of power (sex), greed, front and center folks.

The patriarch must have died broken-hearted in so many ways, back in 2003.

2.5/5. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via the Goodreads giveaway.

This book details the story of America's current most notorious family, the tabloid fixture that is the Kardashians. This book is told in three parts: the Momager (otherwise known as Kris Jenner) the Mouthpiece (otherwise known as Robert Kardashian) and the Miscreants (Kourtney, Kim, Khloe), and details the early days of all of the famous family members.

For starters, this book appears to be meticulously researched. Oppenheimer has interviewed people from both Kris Jenner and Robert Kardashian's early days, as well as many of their close friends. Some of these details were interesting and insightful; however, these parts became a bit long and boring to read.

The third part of this book (the Miscreants) tells the more interesting rise to fame of Kris Jenner and Robert Kardashian's daughters. From Kim's sex tape to the beginning of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, these are the parts that most people are probably the most familiar with. While this would have been the most interesting part of the book to me, it is by far the shortest and really does not include any new information that couldn't have been discovered from reading tabloid headlines at a grocery store.

Overall, this is an interesting enough read despite being told with an obvious bias. I might recommend this for anyone truly interested in pop culture; however, for anyone else, I'm sure there are many similar books out there that I would recommend instead.

This book was painful to read and not because of its subject. The writing was borderline awful. Disjointed and chronologically flip floppy, you never knew what time period you were in. The author’s repetitive use of words (how many times do you really need to use “momager”?) and out of date phrases made me cringe and irritated. The author was obviously biased on his subject and maybe even borderline racist. We get it: the Kardashians like black people and the Kardashians are of Armenian heritage. I didn’t come away with any type of insight about this family. What I did glean was: A. The author hates the Kardashians; B. The author can’t figure out that his audience knows there are black people in the world; and C. The author wishes he was of enough significance to be a regular at The Luau. At least I only paid 5 bucks for the book in the bargain bin but I am bummed that this wasn’t at least a slightly balanced recounting of the Ks. Of note, I am not a huge fan of the Kardashians but I am interested in how they got to be so socially relevant other than the obvious reasons. Pass this book up unless you’re a glutton for punishment.

I had a hard time knowing what to believe as I read this book. From the very first chapter, it is very clear that the author has nothing but contempt for the whole Kardashian clan. With that big of a bias, I was quite sure that everything was seen through that filter and presented in the worst light as possible.
There were a number of things that were flat out wrong - Linda Thompson didn't find Elvis when he died, they had already split up months before his death and was living in CA at the time. Also, he describes water baptism, or baptism by immersion, as baptism of the Holy Spirit. That is something different, evidenced by speaking in tongues. When you get the facts wrong, and don't know what you are talking about, it makes it hard for a reader to believe your writing, especially when it is supposed to be a non-fiction biography.

Interesting but unnecessarily hostile.

This book reads like a cheap, bitter tabloid. Some of the information presented is biographical and interesting, but the author is so consumed by his hatred of his subjects that he sometimes sounds racist, sexist, homophobic, and otherwise incredibly mean spirited in his effort to cast a pall over everything and everyone related to the Kardashian dynasty. Whether you love them or hate them, the authors palatable distaste for them ruins any credibility he may have.

Regardless of your feelings about the subject, this book is awful. The author is repetitive and the whole thing could have used some basic editing. Author is also extremely preoccupied with race and mentions "interracial marriage" several times. You weren't going to read it anyway. Don't.

The subject and facts of the book: 5/5. The writing and attitude of the author: 0/5. So mean spirited and biased. Obsessed with skin color and labeling the women as narcissistic and other opinionated/irrelevant labels. I would have loved this book if it stuck to the stories and facts. What a shame!

I wanted to read "The Kardashians: An American Drama" by Jerry Oppenheimer because I am not a reality tv fan and I wanted to see what I was missing without having to watch them on tv because they have become a huge part of current American pop culture. I did not care for the book at all. It seemed so biased against them and every decision that they have made in their personal lives. While I may not think that they have always behaved in a manner that I would have chosen, I did not think that they deserved as much negativity as the author's tone in the book suggested. Reading the book just left me feeling "yucky".

I am a sucker for the Kardashians. I know a lot of people hate them, but I get so sucked up into the drama, fake or real. I love that this book is mainly based on Kris and how she grew up and her relationships and how the Kardashian name became known around the world. This book also branches off to talk about her first husband Robert Kardashian, the lawyer and best friend of O.J Simpson. It also goes on about the show starting and of course, the Bruce to Caitlyn Jenner Switch. Out of all the children, Kim is talked about the most because of her famous sex tape, but all the kids are talked about in the the book. Very interesting to see how all of this happened and how Kris got to where she is now.

Love or hate the Kardashians, you have to admire Mama Kris's propensity to turn everything into a boon and make money.

What I liked about this book is that it seemed like the most honest look at the happenings in America's reality TV royalty family...you don't have Kris putting her own spin on things - a lot of this book pointed out discrepancies between what insiders know and Kris claimed happened in her own book (Kris Jenner . . . And All Things Kardashian) and how she glosses over a lot of negative things that have happened.

I also liked how the book predominantly focused on Kris and Robert, since it seems like there's not a whole lot out about Robert Kardashian aside from "he's OJ's best friend and helped him as his lawyer."

After reading this I feel like I need to take a shower because it's that dishy, but I really did enjoy it.

A book courtesy of Goodreads Giveaways.

In all honesty I personally have no interest in the Kardashians or their reality shows. The exception would be Robert Kardashian who I followed during the OJ Simpson trial. Regardless, I am aware that the Kardashian clan fascinates many and is indeed an item which frequently comes up in casual conversation. I viewed reading this book as an opportunity to gain some knowledge of the Kardashians so that I could participate and understand some of these discussions. The book delivered on that aspect and I was certainly pleased that Robert Kardashian plays a prominent role in the book.

Oh, man! That hit the spot. I love how much this focused on Robert Kardashian seniors history more than the Kardashian family as we know them on reality TV.

It's really repetitive at times, which made me wonder if Oppenheimer is slipping and/or just has a really bad editor. It's unreadable in spots because of the writing, but if you take a light approach to these types of bios, which I do, you will enjoy it. It's very tabloid, but with a healthy dose of curious and unknown information about the Kardashians.

As other reviews have mentioned, the author is race-obsessed and every chapter seems to end with a “Bob Kardashian must be rolling in his grave” style anecdote.
That being said it’s a gleeful deconstruction of Kris Jenner’s 2011 “memoir” so if you like trash, this is a safe bet. Who knew even MJ was this ruthless?!

I mean, I have never heard of this family.

Oppenheimer seems bitterly jealous of the Kardashians’ success. Never misses the opportunity to include a negative descriptor, especially when discussing Kris and Kim. I’m not one to defend the Kardashians, but for an “investigative reporter”, Oppenheimer sure comes across as an angry old man who has nothing better to do than dig into whatever tawdry history he can find of the rich and famous.

This book is all about name-dropping and scandal (of course!). It is also clunky reading and thoughts thinly tied together, like something sloppily cut-and-paste out of Wikipedia articles. Not even a fun read for trashy magazine-style gossip.

The story of Kris Houghton Kardashian Jenner and Robert Kardashian, their early life, how they met, and how they built a multi-million dollar empire based on absolutely no talent whatsoever. Author provides discrepancies between research and what Kris Kardashian wrote in her tell all memoir.
