Set in the world of The Supernaturals, one of Riffle’s Ten Best Haunted House Books of All Time, In the Still of the Night, a supernatural thriller from New York Times bestselling author of The Event Group series David L. Golemon, will make your Halloween extra spooky this year.

Five years ago, the ghost-hunting Supernaturals disbanded after being accused of faking their footage of the haunting at Summer Place. Now, the eccentric, but brilliant, team of scientists and paranormal experts are being asked to join forces once again― this time to save the President.

Through strenuous investigation and mysterious messages about returning home, the team soon discovers the long lost home of the president: a small town in California called Moreno, a modern ghost town.

When the Supernaturals go to Moreno for answers, they find a presence; something came to Moreno after WWII, something that’s still locked in a steel vault in the basement of the town’s old movie theater.

To make matters worse, the thing in the basement is starting to pull them into its time, Halloween of 1963. With the body count rising, it’ll be up to the Supernaturals to find an explanation for what this paranormal being is and how to defeat it.

David L. Golemon (a.k.a. David Lynn Golemon ) is the author of the Event Group Thrillers, including Event, Ancients, Leviathan and Primeval. Legend, the second book in the series, was nominated for a RITA award for paranormal fiction.

Golemon learned an early love of reading from his father, who told him that the written word, unlike other forms, allows readers to use their own minds, the greatest special effects machines of all—an idea Golemon still believes. The only thing he loves more than writing is research, especially historical research, and he sees the subtext of his Event novels as being that understanding history allows us to create a better future. Golemon grew up in Chino, California, and now makes his home in New York.

I read the first book in the series...[The Supernaturals]...and found it to be one of the best haunted house stories that I had ever read. The way the book ended though I wasn't sure that it was meant to be a series so when [Supernaturals II: In the Still of the Night] came out I was overjoyed to say the least. All the team with all their "ghost hunting talents" were back together...but they didn't have quiet the same pizzazz that the first book had. This one is sometimes a little hard to follow but the story in itself in intriguing. Anyone that craves haunted house and ghost stories as I do will be thrilled with this offering. I do sincerely hope there will be a third one.

I did not enjoy this one as much as The Supernaturals. Again, it took quite a while for this story to get going for me, but this installment also relied on the reader's knowledge of 50's and 60's music. While it might be alright for some to just read past the lyrics and not care what the songs sound like, for me this was a big hurdle.

I knew a couple of the songs referenced, but because of that I kept thinking on the lyrics, trying to see if I actually knew the songs they came from. Unfortunately, this stalled the flow of the story for me. I know the author writes another series and I will still try that one out, though I hope those books are not slow starters like the two books in this series were for me.

I purchased this at an Indie bookstore and didn't realize it was book #2 of a series. A quick google search said I'd be fine to read it as a standalone. My Type-A personality said, "that's not cool, man" but I did it found it 100% fine except they reference their first haunting at "Summer Place". It has no baring on this plot but more for character development.

The characters were all great. The personalities and the dialog had me laughing out loud often. The bold moves made with characters were unexpected. It's a huge cast but I was able to keep all characters straight surprisingly easily. The cast was big but the plots lines and moving parts were bigger! You know that Charlie from Always Sunny conspiracy theory meme, this was the plot. There was a decent background build up, the drama unfolds, and then a nice long and resolution involving past and current happenings with multiple perspectives in each. The plot was thick but easy to follow. I really likely the writing style.

Normally, I tend to think a 5-star is a book I'll run out and scream to the rooftops that all should read however, I don't know this falls into that category. I read that folks think Mr. Golemon's is repetitive but for me not knowing the characters and having the constant reminders of who each individual was added to my enjoyable experience. I find no faults in this book and would strongly consider reading the Supernaturals #1 and not just because I'm a try-hard perfectionist.

It was so much more than this but I often described this book as Marvel's Winter Soldier but with ghosts to people who inquired.

I really enjoyed the first Supernaturals book. It’s hard to find good creepy haunted house stories that don’t devolve into outright horror, and this was a fun premise.
So I was really excited to discover that there was a second book coming out. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hold up to the promise of the first book. Whilst technically there are some ghosts in this book, it is much more of a gorefest than a creepy suspenseful story. As though he has run out of ways to be spooky, Golemon tries to deliver scare factor by just being as gory as possible, which simply doesn’t interest me and isn’t what I’m looking for in a ghost story. The premise is ridiculous – the President in danger, Nazi experiments, and government cover-ups are what I expect from tacky thrillers with an ex-CIA agent gone rogue as the hero, and they don’t work in a ghost story at all.

And because the storyline is so ludicrous, the characters from book 1 don’t have anything to do in this book. Firstly, the Professor and his 4 talented friends were the original ‘supernaturals’, so adding in their enemies from the first book - Julie Reilly, Kelly Delaphoy and Damien Jackson – doesn’t make any sense. And because they’re been shoehorned in, they’ve got no part to play. In book 1, Kelly was the producer and Julie the reporter, so they had distinct roles. In this book, Kelly gets killed off early, for no reason at all, leaving Julie with about 5 lines in the entire book, and Damien there to wave a gun around. The gun is pointless, as people keep telling him that you can’t shoot ghosts, but he’s an ex-cop, so natch. Even Professor Kennedy has no part to play here. He has no research to fall back on, so he’s just constantly reacting to what’s going on around him, and deciding whether or not to go ahead with the ‘mission’. He doesn’t do anything else. Leonard Sprinks has gone from being the genius tech whiz who created a whole lot of cool gadgets in book 1, to being the generic ‘computer guy’. He does nothing except fiddle around in the background, monitoring John Lonetree’s vital signs. Because apparently, if you’re good at computers, that makes you qualified to do anything with any computer, no medical knowledge required. As Bobby Lee left in book 1 (although he also has been shoehorned back in again) Jenny’s entire role in this book consists of holding John Lonetree’s hand as he dreamwalks. Which means that 80% of this book is John Lonetree dreamwalking, and the other 20% is blood and guts.

It is, firstly, boring, and secondly, not remotely spooky or creepy. And because of this, the writing problems from the first book, which were irritating, but I liked the atmosphere enough to get past them, just became blatantly unacceptable. There are all the things mentioned above, but mostly it is Golemon’s appalling sexism/racism and inability to describe characters in any way that’s not embarrassing. Women are either ‘pretty’ or ‘beautiful’. There is no other description given, unless they have big breasts and fill out their clothes nicely, in which case that is definitely mentioned. Men are described ONLY if they aren’t white. And then they are forever described by their race. Leonard is forever the ‘little black man’. Even other characters in the book describe him that way. John Lonetree is the big Indian, and Leonard regularly refers to him with names like ‘Geronimo’, while then getting cranky when other characters give him racist nicknames. Damien Jackson is the big black guy. What do any of the other characters look like? Who knows. They are never described in either book. What colour hair does the professor have? Shrugs. He’s white, that’s the important thing. Apparently you only need to describe characters who aren’t Caucasian. John Lonetree’s heritage is repeated in pretty much every reference to him in the book. You are repeatedly hit over the head with the sexiness of the first lady. And that’s not even going into the double-phallic name of the dog, Peckerwood, that’s mentioned about 50 times. All of this racism and sexism was in the first book, and it irritated me a lot, but combined with the bad storyline in this book, and the author’s inability to use any of his characters efficiently, has turned me off Golemon for good. If there is ever a third Supernaturals book, I won’t be reading it.

A last mention – I listened to the first book on audiobook, and the production values and special effects helped to make the book really creepy. The narrator, Jeffrey Kater, did such an excellent job that I downloaded this book as an audiobook as well, even though it had a different narrator. Whoa, he was bad. Do not waste your money.

Peace

Not as good as Supernaturals but still good. Good will always triumph over evil no matter how long it takes. I hope to see the Supernaturals again.

I had very high expectations for this book. And the plot was great. HOWEVER, there is a dire, dire need for an editor to get to this book. Starting four sentences with "Now" in one paragraph is a no-no. Repeating the exact same description, five pages apart, it makes a bumpy read. There were sentences without verbs. Other times, the background information jibed--girl's mother died in the war when she was an infant, and now she talks about her being there when she was 8 or 9. Just needs a good vetting. I deducted a point on my personal rating. It would have been more had I not liked the plot and characters so much.

That rant being finished, I was willing to stick with the book because I love the characters and plot was great. It definitely had echoes of Stephen King with the ghost town aspect. The intertwining plots were fantastic. The suspense definitely builds, and as the team starts to gather information, all the people against them were great villains.

As the story builds from the 60s to now, you start to put it together. And the main entity they are fighting against starts to build power. It is an interesting spirit that they are fighting, very unique. It made an intriguing concept, and one that the reader should heed. Be nice.

They say several times that this is the last of the Supernaturals. While two characters were killed off--rather violently--the team is still somewhat intact.

After enjoying the first book I went into this one curious to see where it would go. At first I was kinda let down because of the time-gap between this and the first book and you already got the feeling that this book might be the final chapter in the series...AFTER ONLY TWO BOOKS.

Unlike the first book...this was structured really well and had a better pace to it overall compared to The Supernaturals. The backstory was superior as well...really got you attached to principles of the story, Dean and Gloria.

The ending was nice...kind of a feelgood moment given what transpired during the lead up. Really nice easter egg about another book series *hint hint*.

In the end...kinda sad that it doesn't seem like there will be more books in this series (at least that's what I was lead to believe)...but in retrospect, I kinda get it. How much really is there to explore with this theme that isn't going to be a ghost/haunting? The angle or cause could be different but the elements and events would be the same and things might end up repetitive. I do hope we'll see the characters again in other books, in a cameo or similar.

David Lynn Golemon continues his foray into Simon R. Green's Ghost Finder territory with In the Still of the Night. The Supernaturals team gets called in when the US President seems to be attacked by magic in the Oval Office. The past has reached out and grabbed him and left a message. The Supernaturals team is released from prison to find out what is the cause. As is usual with Golemon, conspiracies, hidden forces and cabals abound. In this case the source is related to President Hadley's father's actions during World War II and after that lead to a disaster in California on Halloween 1963. Plenty of spooky, creepy action accompanied by betrayals and supernatural events. It was a decent story, but just did not live up to my expectations.

As an avid fan of the supernatural and the paranormal, I know my scary, ghostly vibe. This book kind of hit that mark. I loved the first book, The Supernaturals, and the haunted investigation at Summer Place. This sequel, in comparison, didn’t give us the satisfaction of seeing the team together like they were before and the ghost story wasn’t nearly as gripping. The historical timeline was slightly confusing and dragged on for far too long. Overall, not bad, but looks like I’ll need to get my paranormal fix by watching another season of “Ghost Adventures” …

Much better than the first book of the series.

Seven years had passed since the events at the Summer House, which were described in The Supernaturals. Since that time the team has debunked many cases of alleged hauntings, never once in that time coming across another incident of supernatural events.

Everything the team went through in the Summer House incident was as nothing compared to the new case they find themselves involved in.

Another fine book from Mr Golemon and I hope to see another from him.

I'm not quite finished with this book, but so far - its great! Not as good as the first book, The Supernaturals, but it's still exciting and a rapid read. This time, however, the group includes the journalist, Julie and the tv producer Kelly, as well as Damian Jackson. Those of you who have read The Supernaturals will of whom I speak. This book also has many twists and turns I didn't see coming. Definitely worth the read, but with the holidays over, a little slower to complete!

I don't often give 5 stars, rather rare from me. However, this book, this story was a well thought out sequel that's actually better then the first book. That's saying a lot. David has a very good flow, story evolution is excellent and keeps you turning the pages. Well worth the time to read it, so good it won't take long. This is not a ghost story, more a sci-fi ghost story if you will. Very enjoyable and I can't wait for the next in the series.....

Decent book. Not as good as the first The Supernaturals book. It was missing something. Maybe if the "haunting" was on a smaller scale. I do like the detail that Mr. Goleman puts into the story. He's very descriptive and it helps you get into the story. I definitely wish he would write more books in this series.

Spoiler Alert! Do not read further if you have not finished the book.
I enjoyed this book, but do have a storyline question.

Ally Oop aka the children followed Gloria in the bank vault in the basement of the theatre on Halloween 1962 and were sealed inside with mercury. So how did they get back inside the Nazi vault at the winery in modern day to escape then to cause havoc?

A fantastic followup to the original book. I didn't think Golemon could pull off the same sort of ghost story as effectively a second time, but he proved me wrong. This was just as intense, captivating, and chilling. Well done!

I got into horror by reading Supernaturals I was pumped to see its follow-up. Funny how none of the blurbs about the book mentioned anything political in it. Politics - 0 stars. Horror - 1 star. I know I will not be reading any of your work anytime soon if ever.

This is a very engaging story; however, the author has a proclivity for describing character by size and race so often that the tendency got to be tedious and annoying. Otherwise, the story is fascinating.

For whatever reason I stopped reading this book. It was driving me nuts and I needed to finish it. I do like this final, I'm assuming, installment to the Supernaturals. I would like to take solace that the ending was appropriate, but it was still very sad. This was a wonderful book.

I liked the first book a lot. It even scared me. This book seemed to be written more like a made for TV movie. A lot of stuff didn’t work in this book but the author’s vivid imagination kelt the book from being terrible
