Jackie Ashenden

Jackie has been writing fiction since she was eleven years old. Mild mannered fantasy/SF/pseudo-literary writer by day, obsessive romance writer by night, she used to balance her writing with the more serious job of librarianship until a chance meeting with another romance writer prompted her to throw off the shackles of her day job and devote herself to the true love of her heart – writing romance. She particularly likes to write dark, emotional stories with alpha heroes who've just got the world to their liking only to have it blown wide apart by their kick-ass heroines.

She lives in Auckland, New Zealand with her husband, the inimitable Dr Jax, two kids, two cats and some guppies (possibly dead guppies by the time you read this). When she's not torturing alpha males and their stroppy heroines, she can be found drinking chocolate martinis, reading anything she can lay her hands on, posting random crap on her blog, or being forced to go mountain biking with her husband.

The Wicked Billionaire is book two in the Tate Brothers series by Jackie Ashenden. I’ve been noticing this author and was tempted by the first book in this series but for some reason, never picked it up. Something about this one called to me so I decided to go for it. Oh my gosh! This book! It was just amazing. Passionate is one word that keeps coming to mind. I don’t know that I’ve ever read love scenes with more passion. And the two main characters had so much passion. This book was just full. Full of so much everything. I could not stop reading.

Lucas Tate was adopted along with his two adoptive brothers, Wolf and Van, by a rich oil tycoon, Noah Tate. Noah has passed and left the three men as directors of Tate Oil and Gas. Lucas is a sniper with the Navy Seals. He is one of the or maybe is the very best at what he does. The reason is because Lucas keeps everything locked away. He has ice in his eyes. He has complete control. He can lower his own heart beat to thirty beats per minute.

Navy Seal

When Noah died, he left his three sons each a letter. Lucas’s letter informed him that the widow of a fellow Navy Seal needs protection against some very bad men. That Lucas must protect her or she will surely be killed.

Grace Riley is the widow of Lucas’s now dead Seal team member, Griffin Riley. Griffin was probably the only friend Lucas had. They weren’t close but the few times Lucas had met Grace, there was something there that made him uncomfortable. An electric current when they accidentally touched. He didn’t know if she was aware of it but he kept his distance because of it. Now he was forced to protect her, to follow her.

“He’d been on missions that had broken lesser men, and this woman, the widow of his best friend, wasn’t going to make him lose it no matter how warm and elegant, no matter how smart or fascinating or downright desirable she’d become to him. He’d never been a weak man and he wasn’t about to start now.”

targets

Grace had been a widow for six months. She was adjusting to her life, although her husband was away more than he was home. Grace was an artist, a painter. She had finally landed her first showing. She had eleven paintings done but needed one more and she was stumped. She couldn’t put brush to canvas. Nothing was coming to her. The last couple of days she had felt something, a prickling on her neck. Then, she finally saw him, her husband’s friend Lucas, watching her. He had always made her feel funny when he was around, and he always seemed so cold, so aloof. Why was he watching her now?

The tale Lucas has for Grace is impossible to believe. That her husband had been a traitor. That he was an arms dealer. And now that he was dead, that he owed the bad guys money and they were after her for revenge. Could she have been so wrapped up in her art, kept herself so distanced even when her husband was home, that she never really knew him?

As Grace and Lucas are stuck with each other until he can figure out who is after her, it becomes impossible to contain the electric chemistry between them. As boundaries are lowered, secrets are revealed. Secrets they both have kept to themselves since their own childhoods. For both of them, they are secrets that have held them back. In Lucas’s case, they are what made him into what he is now. But he is tired of denying what he wants, tired of not giving in to what he feels.

“She was heat and wildfire and sunlight. She was golden and glorious and he wanted her so badly.”

“He was like a bonfire. She wanted to get close enough to warm herself against the flames, but she was also terrified of getting burned. He will consume you if you let him.”

man painting woman's toenails

I just can’t say enough how much I loved this book. I definitely want to go back to the first book and read Van’s story. And can’t wait for the third book to get Wolf’s story. Jackie Ashenden now has a new fan in me.

I paused very briefly before starting this purely because I'd been so disappointed in the previous book 'The Dangerous Billionaire' but thankfully this one (for me anyway) turned out to be much better.
Lucas is the most attractive of the Tate brothers he's also ice cold, he doesn't allow himself to get attached because he doesn't believe he deserves to be happy.

Lucas has a troubled past and once we discover the source of his pain we understand why he is the way he is, ice cold and untouchable.

Grace has also suffered first at the hands of her parents and then losing her husband six months ago. Now she discovers that not only was her husband not the man she thought he was he's also endangered her life and the people he was dealing with are after her.

Lucas has been tasked with protecting Grace and he's never failed a mission yet.

Lucas can't understand his fascination with Grace because she's not beautiful, she's not even pretty but he's been drawn to her from the first moment they met.

I loved Lucas and Grace slowly grew on me.

She annoyed me at first because seriously if a man you know, a SEAL and friend of your deceased husband tells you your life is in danger you take notice not say thank you for the heads-up, but I’m sure I can deal with it myself.
Plus lets not forget the TSTL moment.

I enjoyed this book and after reading the end I can't wait for Wolf's book.

There’s something about an author that can write about the personality and actions of a person in such a way that it sucks you right into the story.

This story is about Lucas, whom we met in the first book. He’s cold and calculating, a master at his craft. But yet he burns very hot for those that can penetrate and deal with his icy exterior. A person like Grace.

The author is extremely talented at highly detailed descriptions of people, places, and things. Quirkiness and details many people wouldn’t notice in a day to day life, but yet add so much to the story.

She writes about the push and pull of a connection between two people that seems like hate on the exterior but is actually a deep, fiery attraction. The steam between these two may actually raise your own temperature a few degrees.

The story and plot is intriguing and interesting with never a dull moment. We even get a sneak peek into what’s happening in the next book. Yay! Written with a little bit of edge and suspense, a little bit of grit and crime, you get a taste of real life with the heat and passion of a relationship we could only dream about.

Jackie Ashenden is a writer who can balance a wonderful plot, deep description, sexy heat, and plenty of anticipation of more to come into a book that begs to be read. This series is definitely one to put on your list. You will want to start with book One in this series so you can get a feel for the entire story overall.

Lucas is the 2nd Tate brother to tell us his story. All three brothers were summoned to NYC after their adoptive dad died two weeks ago, and each of them has been given a letter.
In Lucas's letter it says that he has to protect Grace from some dangerous weapon dealer guys. Grace is the wife of one of his former SEAL team mates - who died - while doing illegal weapon-selling things.
But Grace doesn't want to be protected by Lucas. She can't stand him. He can't stand her either. But of course there's also this mega attraction on both sides! ☺

I really enjoyed this story. I had some huge problems with the first book, and some of those problems are still happening here... Like the wordiness of the book. The author just doesn't stop with the words. There are sooo many words. Sentences, thoughts, talks. Mostly inner monologue, that gets repeated a million times. A good editor should've cut out at least 50 pages of redundant words, but I guess there was no editor. But still, I liked it so much better than the first book!

It's weirdly funny, exciting, mysterious.... we have lots of sparks ...
Lucas appears a bit aspergerish to me - you'll see what I mean when you read the book.
But I loved him - he's a bit different - or rather completely different. Grace calls it cold and emotion-less. But he's not - he just turned off all his emotions and wants and desires years ago - we'll find out what happened back when he was little. But still, it's a bit creepy - what happend to/with him (twice!) and what's his job now - he could be a serial killer in a Criminal Minds episode! ☺
BUT - I really enjoyed this book. Two completely different people heal each other and fall for each other while trying to find some bad people. Or at least Lucas is trying to find them - Grace is desperately trying to finish the last painting for her exhibition! But of course we know where her inspiration will come from - from this amazingly beautiful Navy SEAL sniper!!

... Great suspensy and sparky SEAL / Bodyguard romance!

Now I can't wait to see what Wolf will do with his letter! Looks very interesting already ... what we see in the Epilogue ☺

Grace’s husband died six months ago while serving his country. At least that’s what she thought. Lucas, her husband’s friend, has been sent to protect her from some extremely dangerous people.
I loved how this couple start out not liking each other and as the story progresses, so does their mutual respect and ultimately, love. It’s a book that is in constant motion emotionally as they work out their own personal issues.

The fact that Lucas was so icy cold and yet Grace was able to thaw him so completely was the greatest selling point in this story. With a background like his I would be surprised if he wasn’t iced over. Grace is struggling just to prove to herself that she’s talented and worthy. She’s a strong heroine but not afraid to accept the help that is being offered to her. Well, after he talks her into it anyway.

I’ve struggled with the last couple of books by this author but this one reminded me why I keep reading her. This hit the bullseye, dead center!

This is an honest review of an advanced copy provided by NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press.

Dual POV
Safe – no ow/om drama
Possible Triggers – heroine is attacked but not in a sexual manner
Epilogue – not for this couple but sets up next book

Lucas Tate and his brothers just lost their adoptive father, Noah Tate. After Noah's death each of the three brothers received a letter from their father with his last wishes. In Lucas' letter his father tells him to look after Grace Riley who is the widow of one of his brother-in-arms.

Grace Riley doesn't realize how much danger she is in when she meets Lucas again. Her late husband had some shady dealings going on when he passed and the men he was dealing with are out for blood.

Lucas and Grace find themselves not only in danger from the bad guys but also in danger of falling for one another.

This story had soooooo much potential but it just didn't connect for me, unfortunately. I had high hopes after the first book but this one left me feeling flat.

I would recommend reading this series in the order the books were released due to crossover but it can be read as a standalone if you wish to do so.

Happy Reading!!!

The Wicked Billionaire
Tate Brothers #2
Jackie Ashenden
5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wow! That was a great story. This book had everything you could ask for. It had the sexy romance between Lucas and Grace. Lucas has a lot of emotional issues that come from a bad childhood experience. He lets nobody close to him and keeps his heart surrounded in ice. At least until he meets Grace. It has the suspense of somebody trying to kill Grace which requires Lucas to become her protector.
The first book in this series was about the eldest brother, Van. Lucas is the middle brother. The 3rd book is Wolf's tale and I can't wait to read it. Jackie leaves you wanting more by giving you a piece of what the next book is about at the end of this story.
Thanks NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.

The Wicked Billionaire was an enjoyable read. I loved that it contained the ugly duckling trope but with a twist, I really loved the slant the author put on it. While I enjoyed that aspect I didn't too much like the fact that the hero didn't grovel after he messed up or the fact that he had been fighting this internal battle for most of the book and realized something that caused an about turn in his character. Had he come to this conclusion gradually throughout the book it wouldn't have felt as abrupt as it did.

That said I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series especially with what happened in the epilogue.

Thank you NetGalley and Meghan at St. Martin’s Press for providing me with an advanced reading copy!

It took me a while to pick this up, only because I wasn’t that impressed with the first novel of the series, and I didn’t know what to expect. While I didn’t love this, it was a bit better than the first novel.

Lucas is icy cold with a hard demeanour and tough past. Grace is dealing with her husband’s recent death while he was serving his country. When the two meet they take an instant dislike to one another.

Lucas has been tasked to protect Grace but she is a strong heroine that knows she can look after herself. She doesn’t need Lucas...that is until she starts slowly letting him into her life and looking past his hard shell to the loveable man he is underneath.

It was slightly irritating how stubborn Grace was in the beginning, especially ignoring Lucas’ advice when he is a SEAL. I get that she wanted to do things herself but when a SEAL is telling you your life is in danger you should probably listen. She definitely had to grow on me as the novel went on.

Lucas, on the other hand, I immediately liked even though he was quite distant. I really just felt bad for him and how lonely he was. It got a bit old though when he kept pushing Grace away, when we as the readers knew how much he actually liked her, it seemed like drama for drama’s sake.

I think Jackie Ashenden is a talented writer and the chemistry between Grace and Lucas was great but overall this is not my favourite series.

'The Wicked Billionaire' by Jackie Ashenden is book Two in The "Tate Brother" series. This is the story of Lucas Tate and Grace Riley. I have read the previous book but feel this can easily be a standalone book.
Lucas along with the other Tate brother have been summed back after their adopted father past away.
Lucas tries to be hard and cold after he hard childhood. Lucas was a Navy Seal and a fellow Navy Seal friend has died and his widow Grace is in trouble. Grace also had a harsh childhood. But is slow to respond to Lucas's help but soon learns she needs him.
Their story was exciting dealing with the danger and also for them learning to love each other.

If you've read the first book in this series, you had to have been wondering what happened to Lucas to make him so icy cold in spite of his movie-star looks. Well, I have to say that finding the answer to this question pales in comparison to the blazing hot chemistry in this book.

Lucas Tate has earned every bit of his reputation as a talented sniper and prefers the company of his brothers in arms to the luxurious lifestyle of his adopted father, but he'll never disobey an order, even if it's one he doesn't particularly like. Which is how he finds himself taking on the responsibility of protecting the wife of a deceased member of his team even when he doesn't want to.

Grace Riley is not one for restraint of any kind and as an artist, capturing emotions on canvas is her livelihood so when she finds herself without any choice but to accept Lucas's protection, it doesn't sit well with her because of the limits it places on her, and his tight control rubs her the wrong way. But first impressions can be wrong because being holed up with Lucas lets her get to know that man behind the stoic facade and the roiling emotions he exercises such ironclad control over.

I enjoyed this book so much and watching Lucas lose his legendary cool was the highlight for me, like watching a cork pop out of a bottle of champagne to let all that bubbly goodness out, but it was not just about that. On the outside, Lucas has everything going for him but on the inside, he's a broken, damaged mess, terrified of losing control and reverting to the boy whose inability to control his emotions led to life-changing actions. For him, every minute spent with Grace is an assault on his ability to keep himself in check but Grace is exactly what he needs. Her own past has taught her some tough lessons and she can show him that it doesn't always have to end badly.

Grace and Lucas have to battle their self-doubts and wounds from their past to find the happiness they deserve but it's all worth it, especially when the reward is a love neither ever saw coming, lots of passion and acceptance.

The story was sometimes slow, especially because with Lucas's career and the danger facing Grace, I expected a lot more action and suspense than I got but it was still a very enjoyable one that left me with some questions about their father's motives and looking forward to the next book.

MS Ashenden has done it again written a story that will engage the reader and have them turning the pages with her powerful emotional words that bring out the inner feelings of the hero and heroine, and both of these two Lucas Tate and Grace Riley have vulnerabilities but show strength their passions ignite as they journey a dangerous path to a HEA that will have you sighing.

Grace is a creative artist who has been put down throughout her life by someone who should have shown encouragement and love and this leaves her vulnerable, she has lost her SEAL husband, killed in the line of duty and is concentrating on her painting. So when Lucas Tate her husband’s friend walks into her life and tells her that her life is in danger, well it upends her life completely and she can no longer deny the spark that shoots between them.

Lucas never shows emotion that was pushed out of him as a young boy he is controlled and in control always so when he is given the task by his deceased father to protect Grace Riley he gets on with the job never realizing what this will do to his inner self his feeling are upended totally as he does what he can to keep Grace safe and tries to keep his feelings intact.

WOW the vulnerable quiet artist Grace is about to melt the ice and snow that is Lucas Tate and in a very sensual steamy and thoroughly enjoyable way. I loved these two what a couple they make they are just so good for each other, I loved seeing them open up to each other and fall in love. Thank you MS Ashenden for another fabulous story bring on Wolf’s story now woohoo. I do highly recommend this one it will have your heart pumping.

This is book 2 in the Tate brothers series and it's all about Lucas Tate. The man has no feelings and is stone cold towards others. Home on leave from being navy seal sniper for his fathers funeral he received a letter from his father telling him he had to protect his dead friends widow and the reasons why. Lucas isn't keen but feels it's his duty to protect and serve.

Grace Riley is the woman that Lucas has to protect. Shocked by what he has revealed she is reluctant to leave her apartment but when her life is threatened she agree's. Grace is an artist but has no belief in herself, she has yet to paint the focus piece for her first exhibition and is still looking for that inspiration. Can Lucas be that inspiration she needs so much?

This book was filled with emotions. On one hand you have the action surrounding her protection and how Lucas will do anything to make sure she is safe, it brings out the alpha instincts in him. Then we have the sadness of their backgrounds and how much they fight to have some belief in themselves again. Both of their stories take them on a roller coaster of a ride and as a reader you can't help but be drawn in to that ride with them. The plot is well written and the characters are mature and well developed. The plot fell slightly flat in the middle feeling a bit repetitive but quickly picked back up again. I am however looking forward to finding out what Wolf Tate has been up to in book 3.

Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. This is the second book in series with the Tate family. This was Lucas's book, and he broke my heart. We constantly have read that he was a cold person, but that he was gorgeous, after reading why he was that way, it was so sad, it wasn't that he didn't care about others, he felt that he couldn't let them get close or he would hurt them. I knew he wasn't a bad person, with how he was with Chloe (from first book) he may not have been friendly, but he was protective. In this book, we meet Grace, a recent widow who is attracted to Lucas, even though she does not even like him, but the feeling is mutual. Of course, that goes to hell in a hand basket, when they act on mutual attraction, and you need to read, to know everything that is happening with her. Eventually Lucas, does give Van his forgiveness (again from first story) and I am happy about that, I can't wait for the next book..Wolf what is going on???

I received an advanced review copy from the publisher via Netgalley for a honest and fair review.

Did not finish. Stopped at 37%.

I can't even express how sad I am that I can't seem to finish this book!!!!!!!!! I so was looking forward to the rest of the Tate brother's stories. But this one is so slow and so far nothing has happened!!! The story stalled once she got to his place. From there on it's been so boring!!! I've picked up and put down this book so many times I've lost count. I keep trying to give it another chance. But honestly, I have so many other books I'm excited to read that I've decided to move on :(

REVIEW: 3.75 stars--THE WICKED BILLIONAIRE is the second installment in Jackie Ashenden’s contemporary, adult THE TATE BROTHERS romantic, suspense series focusing on three foster brothers-Sullivan (Van), Wolf and Lucas Tate-as well as their foster sister Chloe Tate. This is Navy SEAL Lucas Tate, and artist/painter Grace Riley’s story line. THE WICKED BILLIONAIRE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary although I recommend reading the series in order for cohesion and backstory. Some of the events of THE WICKED BILLIONAIRE run parallel to, and cross over with the events of book one-The Dangerous Billionaire.

SOME BACKGROUND: In the aftermath of their father Noah Tate’s death, Van, Wolf and Lucas Tate are called home from active duty to find themselves the recipients of three letters outlining what the future has in store-letters from the grave asking each son for a final favor. There is a dark history between father and sons, marred by secrets and lies, and a father ill-equipped to look after the family he chose to raise.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Grace and Lucas) THE WICKED BILLIONAIRE focuses on the protection of artist Grace Riley. Grace’s husband Griffin Riley died with a secret, and that secret has come back looking for the payout that never came to fruition. A former Navy SEAL and a member of Lucas Tate’s team, Griffin worked the darker side of the military and his untimely demise finds his widow on the receiving end of a series of threats against her life. Enter Lucas Tate, the man with whom Grace will fall in love, but a man whose heart and soul have been destroyed by the sins of his past. What ensues is the building relationship between Lucas and Grace, and the fall out when Lucas pushes away the only woman he has ever loved.

Lucas Tate is a man surrounded by the demons of his past; memories that refuse to rest or let go of guilt that continues to destroy our story line hero. Alone and separated from the brothers of his heart, Lucas is the epitome of a broken, alpha male who is unable to forgive or forget about the past. Grace Riley believes herself to be the ugly duckling; the ‘plain Jane’ whose talent and artistry are unacceptable-a belief reinforced by a father whose own career failed before it began.

The relationship between Grace and Lucas is fraught with mutual self-doubt reinforced by childhoods fraught with disapproval, humiliation and degrading remarks. Lucas doesn’t have a very high opinion of our story line heroine-an opinion that clouds his perception of the woman he believes to be ugly and plain. Basic social interactions are difficult with a man who isn’t willing to accept Grace for the woman she has become. The $ex scenes are intimate and provocative.

THE WICKED BILLIONAIRE continues to focus on the Tate family dysfunctional dynamics-three brothers who struggle in the aftermath of their father’s death, and the directives each has been ordered to follow through until the end. The premise is heartbreaking and engaging; the characters are broken, colorful and charismatic; the romance struggles with one man’s belief is he incapable of love.

Book 2 in the Tate Brothers series and holy hell it's one insanely good read. If you read book 1 please read this book. Book one not only tells Van's story but sets the stage for the following books. much back story along with the plot and absolutely necessary for this series. That said, if you just want to read this book... dive in! It's just that good. This is Lucas and Grace.

Each brother receives a letter from their father after his death. Lucas reads his and his job is to look after Grace. Lucas the trained sniper is not happy about this, then again much of the time Lucas isn't happy. We get good backstory on the boys growing up from his POV as well. Grace is an artist and now widowed. She was married to a fellow SEAL of Lucas' and they were on the same team. Lucas also gets a file folder along with the letter from his late father detailing why Grace is in danger. Seems Griffin was dealing arms with some very bad people and when he dies before a deal is completed. He's got the money, the arms dealer doesn't have the weapons and goes after Grace to get it. Grace has no idea that Griffin was doing this. There marriage wasn't that great.
When Lucas first follows Grace to get the hang of her daily routine and schedule etc and wow does he tear her apart (in his head) from her hair down to her choice of clothing and shoes. Yes, he's a dick.
He's a total alpha, initially so not happy with taking this on and when it becomes apparent that Grace is indeed in danger and a target he takes her into his home that no one knows about, sets her up with all her art supplies and leaves her alone much of the time. She has an exhibit, long awaited coming up in 2 weeks and her last canvas in blank. She has no inspiration to paint. Locked up in Lucas' home isn't helping matters. Although she spends time sketching Lucas. When she gets him to sit still or stand still for 2 minutes.

I really liked Grace. Lucas was consistently a real dick. There's some family drama with the brothers concerning Van and Chloe. Lucas always runs his mouth. The chemistry between the two is intense and pretty obvious, yet Lucas is, what's the word... seems to almost objectify her. If and when he feels like it, he's a quick hit and quit then disappears again. Meanwhile after a huge blow up, she's left alone again to paint and she's up over 24 hours painting. Her last canvas done. She's ready for the show. Lucas thinks he's done his job. Massive fail Lucas, you twit.

I really loved this book. You roll with Lucas and the mood swings and his unforgiving mouth. We get to see Wolf in this book two which is the next book and I must say I am totally intrigued by this one.
The plot in this book was good. Lots of twists and things you definitely don't see coming. Jackie really did this one justice. The characters were so well developed. Baggage and all!

Go for it! Read this one, you won't be disappointed.

First off, thank you to the folks at St Martin's Press and Netgalley for getting me this ARC - it's a great series and i'm so glad to see what was next for the Tate brothers.  We had the exciting introduction into their family a while back with the eldest brother and now it seems like it's time to get into Lucas's story - especially since there were hints throughout book 1 that he had something else going on.  that something else was protecting Grace.

So, Grace - where do we start - she's a girl that Lucas knew of because she was married to one of his close friends in the SEALs - and after his death there's so much that's come up, with Lucas only learning about that after his own father has passed away and revealed a secret.  So Lucas finds himself trying to protect Grace from several folks that are after money that her husband owed people after getting involved with De Santis in an arms deal gone wrong.

Lucas on the other hand, he's a guy who is so stoic, a man who won't allow himself to feel anything because he thinks that he needs to deny himself of all pleasure and happiness....and he feels that its also the only way to stay in control of his life.  Grace makes that quite difficult because she's not that sort at all, she's an artist and by nature she's the kind of woman who is driven by emotion and passion.  So seeing these two come together is quite interesting.

When Grace's life is put in danger, and Lucas has to hole them up in a secret apartment that he owns, we see them grow closer together, but it takes a while for them ever to admit that they have an attraction because they both can't really figure it out.  When they do finally get together, it's hot and steamy and so appropriate for what the story needs.  Ms Ashenden has a knack for finding the best moments to introduce the heat and chemistry and make it build.

There's so much going on in this story that you stay sucked in.  Grace as an artist is trying to finish her series of paintings for her first ever  show and she's having a mental block on the final piece.  Lucas ultimately because the muse for it and when the show debuts, it's something quite impressive.  Then there's the bits of someone is still after Grace and when someone sneaks past their defenses and she's at risk, we see true feelings come out.

I think that we get what we were expecting here, but with the way that the story's written, we don't know what the full ending will be and may not even know it with the finale of the last brother's story.  I feel like De Santis will be a thorn in their side forever, even from what we got in the series from that side of things.  (recall that we got several books of the de santis heirs). So, who knows where things will go, and what family secrets will be uncovered next, but i know that i can't wait to find out.

Copy received via Netgalley for an honest review

I am not going to lie, I did pause before requesting this book, as I did have my issues with the first book in the series (nothing to do with the relationship, more to do with the man!).

However I am glad that I did request, as I really did enjoy this second book.

In the first book, our leading alpha was more secretary than SEAL, and that was where my disappointment came from.

Happy to say that our sniper in a suit is much more SEAL (and who doesn't love a SEAL??)

Lucas Tate,as much as he frustrated me with his mercurial behaviour, I couldn't help but want to hug him.

And when he is with Grace, his friend' widow, well then things get all kinds of confuzzled!

I adore them together, they are both that little bit broken, and they could be just what each other needs to heal. If heads get removed from rectums!

The Wicked Billionaire is frustrating, it is mysterious, it is sexy, it is funny. Much better than the first book, and now I am intrigued for the 3rd Tate brother's story -the epilogue has me impatient for it!

The Wicked Billionaire by Jackie Ashenden
A Billionaire SEAL Romance
The Tate Brothers #2

Three brothers are sent on missions via letters each one is left by their recently deceased father. In book one Van deals with an issue his foster sister, Chloe, faces. In this book we hear the story of Lucas and Grace and in the book yet to come we will hear Wolf’s story and the mission he was given.

Lucas Tate is in control at all times and this, he believes, is necessary to keep his life in balance and also allow him to be the best Navy SEAL sniper he can be. He does not do emotion because it can lead to fiery trouble he never wants to experience again. He knows where his temper can lead and avoiding that temper is paramount.

Grace Riley, widow of Griffin (SEAL friend to Lucas) has no idea she is in a heap of trouble with potential pain and suffering ahead. Nope, she is an artist who escaped her father’s verbal abuse and belittling of her artistic talent, a widow and ready to have her first big art show IF she can come up with the one painting that will tie a year’s work together.

When Grace spots Lucas she denies the situation at first. Realizing that Lucas is only there to help her she allows him to protect her. Neither realize that close proximity might lead to emotions and emotions to more. The more time they are together the more they end up sharing and ultimately end up caring. Their truths are painful but need to be exposed rather than left to fester.

This has action, suspense, a tie-in to the first book and a lead-in to the third. It is a roller coaster ride for the H/h and also for the reader. I was rooting for Lucas and Grace while also enjoying their journey…even when it was painful. The two have so much to give and do it so well with one another – they become more together than apart – and that is just as it should be.

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

5 Stars

**I received a copy of The Wicked Billionaire from the publisher and Net Galley in exchange a voluntary and honest review,**

Wicked Billionaire is the second book in Jackie Ashenden, of her Tate Brothers series. Lucas Tate has been requested by his late father to watch over his teammates widow. It turns out the he was in the midst of selling some highly classified weaponry to the enemy and didn't deliver the goods. So those sketchy folks are after Grace Riley for the money back and the promised arms.

Grace Riley is an artist looking forward to her first gallery showing but if she doesn't find her last inspiration she won't have enough canvases for the show. She doesn't know what her husband was doing so when Lucas tells her he's been ask to protect her, she's very skeptical. They have met before while her husband was alive and neither liked each other. But as she gets to know Lucas more will she be able to melt his ice encrusted heart? Will he be able to convince her that she's a wonderful artist no matter what her father told her when she was 13. But will Lucas be able to keep his infamous ice facade in place with Gracie or will she be able to melt his ice encased heart?

Lucas Tate doesn't want to protect Grace but when his foster father suddenly dies all he wants to do is return back to base and continue doing what he loves be a Navy Seal. He definitely doesn't want to retire and become a board member of Tate Oil or help his brother run a billion dollar company. But when the person who gave Grace's husband the money starts threatening her, Lucas will be there to help protect her. He's always felt that he must keep his temper in check because the last time it exploded he lost his parents. The night of the gallery show he tries hard to stay away but realizes the he's the last portrait and now those attending know how good of an artist Grace is. When she is kidnapped will he be able to find Grace in time and tell her how much he loves her?

Watch out because when the ice melts between them there will be a sudden heat wave on your e-Reader!

This romance was intense but I had some problems with the main characters. Lucas Tate is a Navy SEAL sniper who was adopted as a child by a billionaire. Now his father is dead and, according to a letter left to him by his father, he needs to protect a young widow who has gotten in the way of illegal arms dealers.

Grace Riley is the widow of Lucas's only friend. However, before his death, the friend got involved in the illegal arms trade. He took the money but failed to deliver the goods leaving Grace on the hook for them. Grace is mourning her husband but she is also focused completely on her art career. After a lifetime of being belittled by her father - a failed artist, she has a lot of insecurity both about her ability as an artist and her appearance. She has an obsessive desire to prove herself as an artist and disprove what her now deceased father said about her.

Grace doesn't want to deal with Lucas who is the most beautiful person she has ever met but who is also the coldest. Lucas was taught by his father to suppress all of his emotions and to remain distant from people in order to control his anger issues. This works fine for a sniper but isn't really conducive to a romance.

For the first half of this book I was convinced that both characters needed therapy more than they needed a romance. However, once they were living together and the reasons for Lucas's coldness and dispassion were revealed, I began to feel more sympathy for him.

The suspense part of this story definitely took a back seat to the major relationship issues in this romantic suspense title. Perhaps some of the questions I had about the overall plot relating to the family enemy were answered in the first book in this series, which I have not read.

Fans of the first book or fans who like very tortured heroes will enjoy this romantic suspense title.

When I read the blurb to The Wicked Billionaire I knew I needed to read it. I am absolutely addicted to Jackie Ashenden's books so I knew this would deliver a hot alpha male and a sassy heroine that gives as good as she gets. That is exactly what we a have in The Wicked Billionaire. Lucas and Grace were hot and sexy and their fiery banter was amazing. I could not get enough of them!

When Lucas Tate, an elite SEAL, is forced to protect the widow, Grace Riley, of one of his fellow SEAL team members he is drawn into a web of deceit and dangerous games with arms dealers. His key mission though: protect Grace Riley at all times (even if their combustible chemistry is the only thing on his mind!) I really liked Grace. She was a firecracker who spoke her mind and was opinionated to the max. They were opposites on paper but they were drawn to each other which I loved. He seemed cold and emotionless compared to her artist's soul and it was so fantastic watching then clash like oil and water. But then when all their passion exploded...it was pure fireworks, folks! And I loved every second!

All in all this was a great read. It was sexy, very emotional at times and an extraordinary book overall. I look forward to more from this author in the future!

I would like to thank Netgalley and SMP for an advanced copy if this book for an honest review. Bravo! 4.5 stars! ~Ratula

I have read several Jackie Ashenden novels and most have a great story but are always a story of some female of various qualities hooked up with an over-the-top alpha male type in a tale which is so drenched in sex that the story gets left behind many times.

This one is a bit different, we have the damsel in distress who is not a pushover, we have the usual alpha male type in spades but the sex for once is played down in comparison (still pretty steamy in places) and this allows a really good story to come through.

Seems Grace was married to a guy (kinda passionless marriage closer to friends with benefits) who was selling illegal weapons on the side and it got him killed, sadly he forgot to leave the money and the bad guys want Grace to find it ... or make a really strong final statement on why you don't cheat them.

We have Lucas, Navy SEAL sniper, cold as ice, but through a series of events ends up with the job of keeping her safe and the sparks eventually fly and the story does give you a couple of red herrings and the end was great I thought until the last page which was a horrible teaser for the next book that left me grinding my teeth, can't call it a cliffhanger but since all these stories are tied together you want to read it NOW not next year :)

Bottom Line: Great story, decent passion without turning into erotica for once, loved the ending even with the hook for book 3. 4 Stars

This was a good story; I didn’t like this story as much as the first but it was still an enjoyable read. Author Jackie Ashenden writes great military men. Although, I felt she mentioned Luke’s military background way too often, which is why I think it was not as good as the first for me. But let’s get passed that and move on. This story is about Lucas, whom we met in the first story. Due to a crappy childhood he has become cold, calculating, and a natural marksman, he is also the best looking of the Tate brother’s. He’s been sent to protect a woman named Grace; unbeknownst to her, her dead husband has put a target on her head. I liked Grace she is full of fire, she has the right amount of heat to warm Luke up. This story gives you great suspense, emotional drama, and some hot sexy scenes. I look forward to reading the next in the series; its Wolf’s story and he intrigues me! I give this story 4.5 stars.

***I voluntarily reviewed this ARC for an honest review via NetGalley, this is my honest opinion and has not been influenced by the author, Publishers or NetGalley in anyway.*** Thank you!

I surprisingly really enjoyed this book. It wasn't the typical billionaire romance I expected to say the least. I found Lucas' story heartbreaking, even if he did make me hate him a few times in this book. I liked Grace as well and even though her childhood wasn't nearly as traumatic, it was still very sad as well. This was a great story of two broken souls helping to heal the other. I will note that I hadn't read the first book in the series before, but this can still be read as a standalone.

Lucas Tate is an heir to Tate Oil, but more importantly, he's a NAVY Seal sniper, so yeah, he's not your typical billionaire and is a total hottie and protector. Lucas was actually a foster child and has two other foster brothers and a foster sister. His circumstances that made him a foster child were quite surprising and I wasn't quite sure what I thought of it at first. But once you get to know him and why he did what he did, you just feel heartbreak for the kid he was and the pain he puts himself through now because he doesn't think he deserves it and that he'll hurt anyone he loves. His dad leaves a letter for him when he dies and it includes details that implicate Griffin, one of his SEAL friends, as someone involved in illegal arms dealing and asks Lucas to protect Grace, Griffin's widow.

Griffin has been dead for six months and Grace is trying to move on with her life. She's an artist and has her first exhibition coming up. But she's stuck on that last piece to tie all the paintings together. She had a rough childhood as well and it's really hurt her self-esteem and beliefs in her artist capabilities. She had no clue that her dead husband was involved in something illegal, much less that someone wanted to cause her harm because of that. So when Lucas shows up to protect her, she's hesitant.

It took a while for Lucas to give into his lust for Grace, that's for sure. He frustrated me so much. But when he did finally give in, the heat between these two was off the charts. They just fit so well together and it was sweet that Grace saw more in Lucas than he saw of himself. Unfortunately, Lucas being the cold/hard person he is, he does keep his emotional distance from Grace and ends up being a jerk in the end.

They get their HEA of course, but not without some heartache and reevaluation of themselves. It really took them reassuring the other of their good qualities to make them into the characters they became by the end and to give one another a chance. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it. It had just the right amount of romance with a lot of suspense thrown in there.

Now, that teaser for Wolf's book in the epilogue...yeah, can't wait for that to be released. I'm very intrigued by how that all played out and am baffled and so confused.
