A stunning pictorial celebration of one of the most beloved First Ladies of our time: Michelle Obama. With 140 photographs, inspiring quotes, and excerpts from five historic speeches, this gorgeous volume pays tribute to Michelle Obama. Although it primarily focuses on 2007 to 2016, the book covers the pre-White House years, as well: her childhood, her time in college and law school, her work as a young professional, her marriage to Barack, and her experiences during his first campaign. It also explores her family life; celebrates her First Lady Firsts; looks at her TV appearances and official trips; details her main health, social, and education projects; and presents her as the glamorous, fashionable First Hostess at State Dinners and other events. Fans of Michelle will treasure this keepsake of a trendsetting, socially conscious, and powerful First Lady."
Last week I hit the jackpot when I found this volume for $2.00 at Barnes and Noble. Usually the bargain bin has lackluster titles, but this one does not fit that bill.
I hold Michelle Obama in very high regard. She is my girl crush.
The photos capture her many sides: a loved and loving wife, a nurturing mother, a regal role model, a fun and playful participant, but most importantly, a sincere human being. They say a pictures holds 1,000 words and I believe this strongly.
The photos in this book capture her humanity and compassion.
If there had been more than one copy, I would have bought more to share with friends.
What a radiant, glorious, inspiring woman. The photographs are wonderful, but what makes this book such a treasure are Michelle Obama's own words in speeches from the 2008 campaign to her final address as First Lady. She is a woman of such courage, such decency, such conviction, such intellect, such joy. I found myself choking up toward the end, because I miss her voice and grace. And reading this right now, in the midst of the utter amorality, crassness, cowardice and venom of the current administration, is almost unbearable. Because I believe in the Obamas and the America they led, I have faith that our country's honor will be restored. Spending time with them through these pages -- her initiatives, the education, the celebration of excellence while shoring up those who need extra help, the specific and across-the-board embrace of all children, the commitment to veterans and wounded warriors, the way words mattered, the way hearts mattered, the way aspirations mattered -- is bracing. "When they go low, we go high" indeed.
pg. 18 "To have a family, which we did, who constantly reminded you how smart you were, how good you were, how pleasant it was to be around you, how successful you could be, it's hard to combat. Our parents gave us a little head start by making us feel confident." (Craig Robinson)
pg. 73 "Words matter - what we say, how we behave, we are modeling to the next generation. So if we want maturity, we have to be mature. If we want a nation that feels hopeful, then we have to speak in hopeful terms. We have to show love and empathy. If we want smart leaders, then we have to be smart voters."
pg. 192 "So don't be afraid - you hear me young people? Don't be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourselves with a good education, then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of our boundless promise. Lead by example with ope, never fear. And know that I will be with you, rooting for you and working to support you for the rest of my life."
A beautiful biography of a modern First Lady of the US. The pics R adorable & the legend of her journey is inspiring. It shows her fashion tastes changing as she grew more comfortable in her role. It reminds me a lot of Princess Diana who developed into a fashion icon from a shy young woman.
Her mission to work with children to educate them in the value of healthy eating & moving. Oh man, what a right-on mission. & even after her stint as FLOTUS, it continues.
I admire her & her mother greatly. I admire their moral & ethical attributes. I admire that she never yielded to low blows from those who attempted to demean her & her family. She continues 2 be highly regarded as a woman of influence & power & intelligence & grace.
I love this book. I own it. It was gifted me and I truly appreciate it.
This is much more than a photo book. It's the story of an intelligent, funny, energetic, compassionate, humble, and beautiful woman with her own sense of purpose and style. The color photos show her as a wife, mother, advocate, role model, inspiration and organizer. Separating the sections of photos are transcriptions of her eloquent speeches at the 2008 Democratic Convention, the 2015 Tuskegee University Commencement, the 2010 Let's Move Launch (children's health), the 2014 End Veteran Homelessness Challenge, the 2016 Democratic Convention, and the 2017 National School Counselor Event. In each of these, she advocated for causes in which she believes and works to help succeed. This was a wonderful portrait of a woman who believes in herself, her family and her country, and I enjoyed remembering all the work she did ass First Lady for eight years.
I love this beautiful photographic journey of Michelle Obama’s journey and time in the White House. I will forever remember the stunning intelligent woman and family that I came to love so dearly. She worked to encourage the children to eat healthy and did her best to tackle every issue “head on”. This book shares her journey of being a wife, a mother, and our 1st African American First Lady. A role she didn’t ask for but handled with style and grace. This is sitting on my coffee table to enjoy for a long time!!!!
This is a beautiful book that captures moments of the First Lady during her time at the White House. The book covers certain topics like her college years, the projects that she created while at the White House, and her famous speeches that she gave. My favorite part of the book is her trips that she took all over the world. Oh, how I wish that I could visit those places. Pictures tell a lot about a person and these photos show the type of woman that Michelle Obama is...A woman of grace and dignity.
Great Read. I enjoyed looking at the photographs which gave you a sense of her personality. How engaging and down-to-earth. The photos are exceptional and capture the many areas that the First Lady was involved in organizing and participating. I guess that is what entreated me in looking thru this book are the many types of people she acknowledged, interacted with, shared moments with, and yet was always a lady who represented the United States with excellence. Wonderful book if you don't really want a lot of reading.
I have been blessed and privileged to hear four First Ladies speak at various conferences: Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama. Four wonderful honorable women that did much good work during their time in that position. This wonderful book of speech excerpts, quotes, and great photographs highlights Ms. Obamas impact and success. Well curated and well written dialog. This is a great accompaniment to Obama’s book Becoming.
4.5 stars. The photography was great and brought back some good memories, but I was left wanting more and feeling like something was missing. It was great to include some of her speeches, but more context for the photos would have been better in my opinion.
Completely floored by the excellent writing and photographic art in this real-life depiction of a woman's hard work and dedication to her family, community, and country
