After reading this adorable book, there is absolutely no doubt that everyone should have a "Jack" to love. "Jacks" can come in all shapes and sizes, and this "drooling galoot" and his girl obviously belong together. The illustrations are part of the charm of this book as well. Each page is full of details, and... Jack. Such a sweet rhyming story and probably a book that I will purchase as it will be a "repeat read" at Gramma's house. :)
I will use this book as an introduction to a lesson on writing. The students are learning about capitalization, punctuation, and finger spaces. I will talk about what motivates us to write. Why did Iza Trapani write this book about her dog? We can write about anything! We will brainstorm ideas about what good topics to write about are, touching on the personal narrative aspect of the story. I will also draw attention to the fact that this is a rhyming book. The ending words have the same sounds. The could also be a good book for Kindergarten students as an introduction to rhyming sounds, focusing on phonemic awareness. What are the ending sounds? Put two fingers in the air when you think you hear a pair of rhyming words in a sentence.. and so forth.
