Gabe (age 10) and I both loved this book. It was a really good allegory of the Christian walk in terms we could both relate to and we had some great discussions on how these concepts apply to our lives today. The only reason it's not a 5 star is because there were parts of the story that were very vague... For example, why did Christina and company stay several years in Vanity Fair? Why is it that she died before going to heaven while Christian seemingly just walked over. I'm thinking I'd like to read the full version for myself now so I can get those details perhaps.
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this edition now (nor the original, which I've yet to read completely), but this was one of my favorite books as a kid and is at least in part responsible for setting my life on a certain course.
Lily and I loved this simplified version of Pilgrim's Progress. It provided lots of opportunities for discussion about our journey to Heaven and how we are to constantly seek the LORD and his Word for guidance in every aspect of our life. Also reminded us that the things of this world are not important because "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1Timothy6:6) Would definitely recommend!
No doubt, the children have a clear understanding of allegory and symbolism. Hicks respectfully weaves in the Middle English writing, and still tends to children's understanding.
