Rate this book
Paul Thorne is a violent man with a checkered past who has just obtained his dream job with one of the three most powerful corporations in human space. Working for a steady paycheck, under the protective umbrella of Syrch Corp, is an enormous opportunity that promises a bright future. But all that is jeopardized when Paul receives an unthinkable assignment.

Jillian Caldwell is the niece and ward of a biochemist on Papen's World. Her mother hid sensitive information from Syrch Corp on Jillian's cranial mesh, and now Jillian is a potential threat.

As Paul is propelled on a journey of murder, lies, and half-truths, his resolve is tested as he clashes with the corporation he hoped would be his salvation. Now as Jillian's fate hangs precariously in the balance, Paul must decide whether he has what it takes to be an Enforcer or whether he should let his ethos lead him into an unknown future.

In this gripping science fiction tale, one man is pitted against a hulking intergalactic corporation.

A verry good sci-fi book. One of the main characters is Paul Thorne who works as an enforcer for Syrch Corp. One of his jobs is to eliminate a scientists daughter,Jillian, which turns out to be his niece instead, and he can't eliminate her in good conscience. So he kills his partner and tries to get the girl out of Syrch Corp territory. The people that Paul hires to fly her to safety and fall in love with the little girl.n Unfortunately, she gets kidnapped by thugs that beat Paul to a pulp. What happens next? I always hated it when someone tells me the ending of a book or movie. So read it yourself.I enjoyed it, hopefully you will to.

I won this book in a give a way on here, thank you. Just to be up front about it.

Having read another of this authors books, I was pleasantly surprised when I read this one. While I enjoyed both books, this one was much better. In a way I am glad I read this second. I would have been a little let down had I read this one first and then the other one second. This was like having a nice steak meal and then a great dessert to top it off.

The characters were nicely developed, yet not overly so. Thorne made you sympathize with him, and actually feel bad for him at times. Jillian was a enjoyable surprise as well. She wasn't written to be a know it all bossy little witch, like so many female characters are these days. She was just a really smart little girl who just wanted some friends. Maybe that is a little over simplified on her. I think it fits her.

The story line went along at a good pace too. Didn't get hung up in places like some books do. While he described scenes well, he didn't get wrapped around having to describe every little rock, scratch on every car, or what color the gum was stuck to the sole of a shoe on a pedestrian walking past. He set the scenes, and moved on.

While some scenes I could say, "I saw that coming", there were others that I was surprised with.

I will be looking into getting more of his books, this one was done in one sitting on a flight.

This First Reads contest "win" arrived with all sorts of associated goodies - much fun!

This is a book in a collective "Dryden Universe" world - I suspect similar to the StarWars/StarTrek kinds of future history. It was my first, and so it took a bit to get into the book. Just before the midpoint (page 100 or so) I was actually ready to abandon. I guess that there was just too much what I would consider unnecessary detail expounding a scene. But I plowed on, curious to read about how Paul and Jillian would or wouldn't survive the world of Syrch. The story moved along better in the second half, albeit the technical explanations of interstellar travel were way above my head. The climax was well done, and the resolutions satisfied.
