Arch Merrill was a newspaperman, working for decades for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, first as an editor, then as a writer, and even in retirement as a columnist until 1973. He wrote many local history books about Upstate New York, published from 1943 to 1969. He is buried in Brighton Cemetery in Rochester. This is his ramble in the Genesee Valley River.

Read this book for my book club, local history. The book was actually columns from the Democrat and Chronicle Sunday magazine 1943. The author tells of his travels following the Genesee River from it's sourse to it's mouth into Lake Ontario. Good book for Western New Yorkers.
I didn't finish the book, but I did enjoy reading the stories of towns and villages of upstate NY south of Rochester. Fun to read a bit about the history where I grew up. Also found the start where the author looked for the source of the Genesee interesting.
A really cool book about the Genesse River Valley. If you grew up in Western NY there will be a lot of framilar places and interesting stories. Arch Merrill is a great writer!
